By giving aboriginals a separate legal status we deny them any part of this country. The only thing to do here would be to recognize the aboriginals as both complete Canadians, with all the education, police, and healthcare benefits, all while remaining within culturally ethical boundaries. I.E. Instead of learning French as a second language in school you would learn the historic aboriginal language of the reservation the school is situated.

It's about time that we improve the forgotten and neglected parts of our society. I fought for this country in the Military and now and injured war Ver. I have older sibling that are part native and their reserves are slums and are underfunded. The conditions are sometimes worse then third-world countries. That remind me of villages in Afghanistan. Yet this is freaking Canada, our fucking backyard. We need to grow the fuck up and repair ALL neglected parts of our society and our beautiful country we call Canada!!!

I see only one thing that would be an actual response to this: autonomy for the First Nations. Money will not give them back those years nor their ability to maintain their own culture. Anything our government does will be "us" telling "them" what to do and how to use what we give them, instead of letting the Elders decide how best to educate their young people. If a better solution exists, by all means someone say it, but I feel as though there are no other answers that will allow them to retain their own path.

Seven years and several elections later, Truth and Reconciliation hasn't gotten farther than apologies and a national holiday.
