Breathless?... Breathe less! - In this video Patrick leads me in a version of the ‘Breathe Light to Breathe Right’ method from his best-selling book 'The Oxygen Advantage'. This version is subtly modified to be accessible for beginners and people with anxiety.
By breathing more slowly and softly, we allow carbon dioxide to build up in the blood. CO2 gets a bad rap... but oxygen needs it to be present so it can transfer into your cells and be converted to energy! Because a lot of us have a habit of over-breathing or mouth breathing we breathe out too much carbon dioxide, this exercise is designed to correct that.
Patrick has probably done more than anyone else in the West to popularise the breathing techniques of the late Russian doctor Konstantin Buteyko. Not only can Dr Buteyko’s techniques radically change the lives of people with asthma but Patrick explains why they are relevant to anyone interested in getting the most out of their health.

Thank you Patrick. I've been practising your breathing techniques since I had covid pneumonia in February. I had asthma all my life. Im 73 and yesterday I had a lung function test and did better than I have for years. They were amazed tbh. I can't thank you enough.

Im so glad to have found this. It makes so much sense. I have been trying to figure out why my morning breathing, upon waking, is so calming. It’s because I am breathing slowly, less frequently and more shallowly. Forget the big huge deep diaphragm breathing- I get even more anxious when I do that.

It is based on the work of Dr. Buyteko who pioneered this. He is just a messenger. But a very good one.

I am grateful for these exercises in conjunction with your incredibly informative interviews. While still a big fan of resonant breathing hrv, this is a VERY important addition to my breathing practice. I’m excited to see how my Raynaud’s Syndrome will be reduced this winter with this exercise! Thank you so much.

Thanks for this! I will try this breathing technique to help with my anxiety/ panic attacks. I feel like i'm suffocating when having to wear a face mask and then also feel anxiety which leads to an onset of a migraine. Btw, just to let you know, the link for Patrick's book seems to be incorrect.

When I first started it made me have panic attacks as well. But I kept with it and eventually it went away. I use this to manage my lung condition and it is incredibly helpful. Just take is really slow. Take longer rests and only hold for a few seconds (maybe one or 2) and allow yourself flexibility. Even just nose breathing for a period of time without doing the breath hiolds or without slowing it down can be helpful to retrain your response. I find it especially difficult for people with stuffy noses and I suggest they find some remedies; herbs or homeopathy to help with that; and find ways to reduce inflammation in their body to help with that. My daughter got on some homeopathy and now her nose is not stuffy all the time anymore and she can do the nose breathing better. Good luck!

So perhaps masks were helpful after all!
@alexanderwindh4830
@alexanderwindh4830 2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps! 😊 But I'd imagine most people who can barely breath like this, won't be able to do the calm and slow breath through a bad facemask. Which would cause them to overbreath and even stressful breathing. ***** But interesting thought.

not when walking fast remember that these days people live rushing and they take much more breaths than in past that's part of reasons of their burn outs and high blood pressure and they add coffee on top of that which decreases blood flow to heart and give problems to ppl with slow metabolism like those sitting whole days ... and not moving much
@lr1732
@lr1732 11 ай бұрын
No because when you exhale you also exhale lots of metabolic waste in addition to CO2 and that waste is not suppose to go back into your lungs. It is a waste product. It is actually toxic when inhaled repeatedly. And masks build up lots of bacteria really fast due to the moisture of your breath. Masks are def not good.
