i'm close to 80 yr.s old and have been an athlete and fitness person most of my life. i don't do heavy wts. anymore but i do more functional lifts. i started doing push ups 2 years ago as a main exercise protocol as well as chin ups. i worked up to 200 push ups a day in sets of 30. 40, 50, 60 and 70 over the course of time. now, i do them every other day or so and one of my goals is to do my age(77). i made it to 71 so far. being a competitive masters swimmer i need to be careful with my shoulders. i can tell you that my shoulders and pecs are very strong and defined and the push ups make the difference between my nijpples being around my waist and nearer my clavicles. push ups are a game changer.

My biggest regret is that i didn't take caliesthics into more importance when i was younger. But doing it now in my 30s, i can do heavy set exercises without failing too early. Also, there's no shame doing pushups from knee position when starting out but once you gain enough strength and confidence, you can do full range. Good luck gym bros, we're all in this together

Honestly strength wise between a man in his early and mid 20s who had never worked out and a man in his early to mid 30s who also has never worked out are roughly about the same in strength some people will disagree with me on that but i am going by what I have seen and honestly its better to start late then never keep up the good work Edit: idk how old you are exactly so i am gonna say 32 so early 30s haha but honestly your doing it now and there is no reason why you ca t get as physically strong as anyone in there early and mid 20s and because your now older you have more of a mental will to push yourself harder

I started going to the gym last month. I didn't know how to do pushups. For the first two weeks, I've failed miserably doing a push up with the right form, technique along with full range of motion etc. Now, I can do more than 100 pushups in a single day not in a single row. That's a big achievement for me as of now. Within just 3 weeks I've improved a lot. I'm sure one day I might be able to do 1000 pushups in a single day. Not a joke. It's absolutely possible. I'm still going to learn pull ups + chin ups. Practice makes perfect.

@@tackywacky99 you can look at charts or even consult with an expert if you don’t believe me. The average dude gains around 12-15lbs of muscle per year. Second year it’s about 8-10 pounds and third year it’s about 5-8 pounds. If you have the shittiest of the shit genetics you should still be able to gain a minimum of 8-10 pounds of muscle in your first year. I’ve gained around 7-8lbs in the last 4 or 5 months while getting more vascular and maintaining the same waist size. This number could be inflated though because I am only 14 years old and puberty probably helps. Though I haven’t grown any taller I don’t think. How much did your delts grow? I did 50 tricep extensions and bodyweight curls for 2 weeks then rested a week because of an injury and my wrists were making noises whenever i do the exercises. Did that again for 2 weeks and stopped doing them two days ago. I got 1/2 inch growth in my arms. I was cutting during both times. Now i started doing 40 pushups and 40 inverted rows 6x a week and will increase 10 reps every week. Do your exercises while squeezing the shit out of your muscles. I'm 50 years old, 225lbs 5'10". I lift twice a week. Run 1 miles twice/week sprint intervals. And this month (since july 1) added 200 pushups per day. I do all 200 in a span of 20-30 minutes or mix sets of 15-25 reps between lifts on lift days. Doing 200 pushups has actually helped my hurt shoulder. The key is not to cheat on the pushups. All the way down all, the way up, at a slow to moderate cadence. Next month I will be adding pull-ups and situps to the pushup routine and maybe daily body squats/jumps. Also make sure every shower is a cold shower (no hot/warm at all) its definitely helps with recovery. Been doing the cold showers for 4 months now.

I especially all of the ring turned out (RTO) movements, they work you chest, core, lats and biceps like no other. I did this every night for like 3 years until I started lifting weights and I can confirm how much it helps. Nucleus overload led to significant chest growth and upper body strength. I wanna start incorporating this again, so maybe I’ll do a max set of 85% of my true max set on my off days, or so sets of 20 because it seriously is great. High frequency pistols, full back bridges for reps, muscle ups, and hanging leg raises done everyday in a circuit format. Maintain a ratio of every one muscle up you do, perform twice as many back Bridges and hanging leg raises and 4 times as many pistols per leg. Maintain this ratio and gradually progress over time to be able to perform as many rounds as possible for 30 min straight, and then do this 2xs a day (morning/evening) for a total of a hour a day of training. Consistent performance and gradual progression of consistent performance on a high frequency basis is key. Escalating the reps also helps while maintaining exercise rep ratios. Like 1st circuit: pistols for 4 reps each leg, back bridges 2 reps, muscle up 1 rep, hanging leg Raises 2 reps. Then 2nd circuit pistols for 8 reps, bridging for 4, muscle ups for 2, leg Raises for 4 etc. The goal is to perform for 30 min straight with no rest on a high frequency basis with consistent performance and to gradually progress over time to accumulate up to a hour straight training twice a day to allow rep numbers approaching the 1000s. This will get you well conditioned metabolically, give you cardio endurance, strength, muscular endurance, hypertrophy and improved body composition all in one training modality implementing 4 calisthenics everyday. Just in the context of a sophisticated and simple modality of progression.
@tylerscott2116

Alternative and more accessible and simplistic exercises with the same modality would be just squats or push ups, or hindu squats and hindu push ups with a ratio of 2 squats for 1 push ups.

100% bro. I was incarcerated for 9 yrs and let me tell you this works. There many inmates who never touch a weight but are " bar masters" and they are jacked trust me. Theres others who do both weights and calisthenics and we are jacked as well. When i got locked up i was 165lbs. I spent 8 months doing pushups and pullups daily. When i finally had access to weights i was doing 225lbs for 15 reps just starting and was about 175. Thats literally just starting. Pushups and pullups daily works. Dips as well. I had a friend inside who did 500 bodyweight squats in his cell for about 5 days a week for a year or so and his quads were freaky for his size. This seems to work!!

I’ve done this actually! I’m a former HS wrestler, so you (Alex) know more about that type of work ethic than anyone on KZbin Fitness! Only thing I did differently was I would do 500 Pull-ups & 1000 push-ups a week. I would break those up totals either daily or would separate the pushups on one day & pull-ups on another throughout the week. For example, for pushups: - 200 in a morning on wrestling practice, 200 after for 2 days & 100 in the morning & 100 at night for one day. & pull-ups were structured the same way, but the numbers were divided by 2 because the amount was half of the push-up total. I would do these on days I wasn’t running pushups. Would love to know what you think of this! I was also doing partial reps because my main goal at the time was building up muscular endurance 👍🏼 P.S. Alex, I would love to hear your point of view on a warrior’s (the archetype) need to express himself! I’m very curious as why such a strong spirited male such as myself & many of your viewers find the need to paint, create music etc. is it because their warrior side is so strong that the opposite is equally as strong? IE: the taller a person, the bigger the shadow? I find myself as a young man equally talented at creating music and fitness. However, I find many people that are into fitness also are into music, so I wonder is my true calling a fitness person rather than a creative? Would love to hear! I know you’re not a yo Elliot channel but your insight is what I respect the most about you. Cheers.

I actually tried this once. I read a book about Jack Dempsey and he did workouts including running, lifting weights and sparring every day. I thought well if he was able to recover with daily work maybe I can. I also thought about construction workers and people with physical jobs and how their strength generally benefits. At the same time I've had experiences where I've found lifting less often or less intensely helped my strength. So I tried to balance both approaches by doing one set of pull ups and one set of push ups daily, then full strength training workouts 2 times a week. It worked well for me. I'd say i was more muscular than ever before or since.

I got it past 275 recently and 40 was still a struggle. My personal best was 60 around when my 1rm was 235. Now I said I’m gonna hit 70 in one set then work up to 100. Starting with 100 push ups over 3-4 sets a day. I do supersets with crunches and body weight squats. I was equally embarrassed that my near 400 lb squat legs were sore after doing only 80 squats over 3 sets. I’m also gonna hit 100 of those too before I’m remotely satisfied.

One of my favorite workouts I ever did was pushups and some type of ab exercise everyday. For pushups my goal every day was 700-1000 reps and for abs it was 500 reps. This was very easy to follow and didn't affect my recovery in any way. I would do 150-200 pushups and 100 ab exercise reps multiple times throughout the day until I reached my goal. I would do decline,regular and incline for my pushup reps and whatever ab exercise I did that day. In between each set of pushup variations I would do my ab exercise. It didn't take long and was a lot of fun to do. I always looked forward to it. I did this workout on top of my athletics workouts for baseball and football.

I got in a bad car wreck on July 8, 2021, I broke The 4 lowest vertebrae in my back, my S1, and multiple ribs, and collapsed my left lung I recovered relatively fast I was back walking around by October of the same year. I didn't anticipate how badly the mental side of losing all my progress in fitness kept me back. I finally adopted a philosophy of progress, not perfection. My ego was so bad that I thought pushups were beneath me. However, to succeed we must master the tools at hand for better tools to appear. I've started doing push-ups, curls, and air squats. In sequence. 1rep,2reps,3reps,4reps,5reps,6reps,7reps,8reps,9reps,10reps,9reps,8reps,7reps,6reps,5reps,4reps,3reps,2reps,1rep. With 30lb DBS for curls For push up I do 1rep,2reps,3reps, and 4reps, 5reps. The goal for push-ups is to be the same as above. Air Squats - as many sets as it takes to get 50 I do this threw out the day. Remember when you have to rebuild. "Progress not Perfection"

@SanderJanssenBSc 6 жыл бұрын
Isn't this basically greasing the groove method? And what's the goal because I can do 3 sets of 20 bw pull ups with 1 minute rest right ( full range of motion) is the goal to be able to do 3 sets of 25 or is this just to stimulate more growth from a day to day basis? And if so doesn't this just work endurance?
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The goal is to get a high total workload (as expressed in all frequency programs), raise general strength, improve muscular size, and aid in conditioning. Ramp up the reps as high as you can (and add upon that, while not impeding recovery), and no this doesn't build just endurance that's the furthest thing from the truth. If you're doing hundreds of pullups a day you'll get very strong and muscles will 100% improve in size. This will serve you on all levels
@JuanPablo-rf4vo
@JuanPablo-rf4vo 6 жыл бұрын
greasing the groove encourages you to progressively overload the amount of reps or sets, but still not going close to failure, so ur still increasing volume over time but not toiling recovery. For instance: your max pull up count is 12 or something. You do several sets of 8 for 2x weeks. then you go for sets of 9, then 10, now your max pull up count its like 15 reps.

@@AlexLeonidas right thanks for the reply to me it just seems weird that doing for example when taken to the extrem 100 pull ups a day or even 200 a day will still challenge you enough to gain strength I mean I've used this method before but at like 80 push ups in 1 set in my normal workouts and overall it just took the difficulty out of push ups which was back then my main movement for chest work. I'm assuming I'm supposed to do for example weighted pull ups (I already do this) and use this to supplement it all? I'll make sure to give it a try since I'm curious to see how this will work out for my strenght

Funny enough this is what my fictional character does in a novel I’m writing. Especially since he’s former military. The character in question is often called “The Road Ranger” and is often described to be a “one-man death squad.” The setting he’s in is a post-apocalyptic environment.

I used to something similar to this but with pushups- for conditioning I would do 100 skips then ten pushups right after and that makes 1 set. I would repeat ten sets netting in 1000 skips and 100 pushups and I tried to go as fast as I could. This routine made me feel super fit and made my bench and posture feel alot better. Try it out!

Day 1 50 pull ups and 100 lat raise. Day 2 50 dips and 150 crunches. Repeat for 60 days while slowly adding each day over time and change grips. This is what I've begun and I'm very curious how it'll turn out.

Great vid Alex. I lifted weights for years and recently started pullups and dips and have noticed a difference in upper body development. I am curious as to how many pull ups you can do without stopping. I am sure it's a high number.

Beginner here, i do 3 sets of 10 reps of push ups a day before the shower (if I shower 2x a day thats 60) for one year and a half. Doing back and leg work in the gym to save time. Improvement on my chest is awesome.

In my experience, definitely mix up your styles of push up/ pull-up to reduce likelihood of overuse injuries. And go slow( meaning ease into high volume) i bought a doorway pull up bar once and got so excited about doing pull-ups I gave myself tennis elbow.

Two weeks ago I started to do 500push-ups, 5days/week and I can say, it is definitely worth it... My main goal is to actually elevate my mind. And the better shape of my body is just a bonus. My ultimate goal is to do 2000push-ups. Just wanted to share with you my journey :D Have fun, stay strong and positive ! :)

I don't think that someone that could only do 1 pullup on day one would be able to do 8 at the end of the first week.

I used to grease the groove with diamond pushups and chinups like this all the time. I got much stronger and put on some size (back, shoulders, biceps) only thing I would say is use variations so you don't damage yourself. I was thinking about adding this to my current routine, thanks brother, hitting a set now :)

Here recently I've been doing pushups, pullups, and as much as people disagree with sets over 30 I've been doing centennial sets of body weight squats. 3-4 times a day. The name of the game is overall work capacity and conditioning right now. And the only difference between that and my actual workout sessions is weight. So bodyweight squats turn into barbell squats, and everything else I either just wear a weighted vest or a weight belt and I add a good bit of variety.
