Hi Mr Ballard. I am new to golf, I am a senior who has taken up golf during the Covid lockdown in the UK. I am lucky that I have a field to practice? I got my club and balls from a Charity shop. I was struggling to hit the ball until I saw your video on hitting down on the ball. You have made it very pleasurable to hit the ball now as previously I was constantly hitting the top of the ball. You are an inspiration. Thank you very much.

This is the move , the x factor, everything comes together when you Sense this. I've been on a hunt for several Weeks, trying to get the logic that combines the takeaway, backswing and downswing and this move, to start the weight shift during the backswing IS the golden key. Thank you Clay!

You and Eric Cogorno--two superb instructors--have great looking, repeating full swings, and now I know the reason they look so fluid and so effortless: these two key moves. It is this subtle move right over your trail hip and a subtle, but more significant bump and turn back to the left before you reach the top of your backswing. Great explanation here Clay. I'm an advanced student who still does have a bit of a problem making good, compressing contact 100% of the time, but just got a little better...sometimes you do miss the "forest for the trees." Greetings from Lexington. All the best Clay. Thanks!

Hi Clay. Thanks for sharing the video, there is some great stuff in there. I can only speak on behalf of myself but the drill does 2 things for me. Firstly, it gets the weight on the correct side early enough, which I struggle with big time! Secondly, and I am not quite sure why, getting the weight forward early seems to pull my right elbow closer to my ribs which has made a real difference to my ball striking. I have been known to hit from the top so this drill seemed to fix two things at once. Thanks!!!

I would like to add another element to this squat move. I have watched dozens of golf instructors on You Tube and have taken lessons for 25 years from various pros in my area. Not one of the pros EVER told me about the squat move. I have seen it demonstrated by many instructors on You Tube, but I could never duplicate it....until now. I have finally figured it out, and it is relatively simple. Two things - 1. Pretend that you are throwing a 30 pound sledge hammer down the course. To get maximum distance, you will raise UP as you turn away from the target (back swing), and come DOWN (the squat) as you turn through (down swing) to throw the hammer down the course. Your legs give you the power and the dynamic force to heave the hammer. 2. - Have a very strong grip. It sets your shoulders, head and tilts you automatically away from the ball, and gives you a tremendous amount of lag, and de-lofts the club. The swing is just throwing the hammer!! Don't even think about the ball. I have gone from hitting a 7 iron 140 to hitting it 175, and I am 68 years old!! Don't believe me, TRY IT!! Don't forget - Strong grip and throw the hammer!!

Clay, I tried starting the squat when my hands were parallel as you mentioned. It felt really early to start it. Do you still keep turning your left shoulder down as you squat? AMG golf channel and their pro 3d models says there is no seperating of the knees in the downswing by pros but maybe even a small decrease in knee distance. I tend to agree. It's one thing to load down, its another thing to seperate your knees in opposite directions.

The weight shifts because the mass shifts. The mass shifts due to the pivot. The motion is “angular “ not linear ( lateral ). The weight shifts but you do not PURPOSELY shift it. The sit down move occurs just after the axis tilt at STARTDOWN. Pivot is key. The circular motion does the throwing. PIVOT no slide ... Cheers F

While watching a video of Dustin Johnson’s best shots in the PGA I noticed that he used in 2015-16 the TaylorMade M1 with two moveable weights on the bottom. I dont like the sitting down move in general. Its not necessary and it leads to fat shots.

Avoiding fat shots with this move is only achievable with good shaft lean. It scares the hell out of you at first, but you have to be persistent. Most people just give up. _"And that is why you fail."_ -Yoda

You're exactly right, you don't have to do the squat and it can lead to fat shots if you don't get the body opening up and release the club more out in front. However, it is necessary if you want to play at a high level. If you don't get some flex in the legs then you won't be able to get forward shaft lean and compress the ball as much. Play well!
