What they may not understand, is the rich men who live north of Richmond Virginia is Washington dc. The U.S. 🇺🇲 capital. Where are politicians debate over what to spend U. I absolutely Love these venerable Eastern gentlemen; always, in everything I’ve seen. I love them all the more in this reaction. They are so earnest and intuitive in their reactions and it’s so wonderfully irrespective of culture or language or anything! I love that they immediately understood that the singer is a simple (but passionate and reasonably talented young man), who wanted first and foremost to sing out his displeasure/disillusionment with those in power. I love more than anything the fact that people can ‘feel’ other people, regardless of language, culture, etc; simply by accessing their authentic humanity and for this I praise these fine men! ❤

"I wonder why a rich country like the USA can send money to other countries but not take care of its people first". We here in the USA are wondering that, too. The man singing is from a place in Eastern USA called the Appalachian Mountains. People there tend to be very family oriented and very independent. It's beautiful country, but the people there tend mostly to be poor. There used to be a lot of coal mines there and that had provided some jobs for people, but those have mostly closed. It's very sad. I loved their immediate understanding of the song. These men are so insightful and wonderful to listen to.

I'm a 57 Year old white American man, born poor in the South and a hard working man barely able to scrape by to raise my family slaving away in the Texas oilfields, so the message Oliver Anthony's music relays has truly been a blessing for me personally. I just wanted to say the knowledge, wisdom, and insight of these men in your video transcend any social, religious, or nationality barriers we may have, and I do not regret stumbling into this channel. Thank you all, dear men of wisdom! We are more alike than we will ever be different, and the evildoers controlling the helm of this worldly ship are fearful of us realizing this and coming together to stand against them! Loved the song, however one part I didn't agree with. While there are individuals who milk the welfare system there are more who don't. Individuals who slave away and desperately need it to feed their families. I'm on social security disability. Hate it, wish I could work instead of multiple doctor and ER visits. Can't understand how the able bodied choose not to. And they are the ones misusing the system. Crazy thing is I've lived many many years on a fixed income and never applied for food stamps until last week and it broke my heart. But unexpected bills have hit me hard as well as inflation. So I have now found myself in this position. I have friends and family who are able to work and work hard, but it seems like things are set up to keep people poor.

My husband works in DSS. He says the vast majority of people who walk through those doors he never sees again, or maybe sees once a few years later. The social safety net works. There are very few people who abuse the system. The unfortunate part of it is that once you fall hard it's really difficult to get back up; the bills pile up, the body falls apart, illnesses compound, can't keep up with repairs, and the hole just gets deeper. It's too easy to fall into the poverty pit and too hard to get out. People don't realize they are one bad fall, one car accident, one bad illness away from financial devastation. Don't you ever feel guilty for needing to eat. OK? You are a valuable person unto yourself.

Agreed. I think that part of the song kind of took away from the overall message. The quality of food that folks can access on benefits or low budgets is worse and leads to obesity. You have to make things stretch, so that leads you to purchase a lot of starches and preservative-laden foods that can be mixed in with other things. He was kind of blaming the poor (and the poor obese) in a way that detracts from the wrongs of the "rich men north of Richmond." He's doing exactly what the rich men north of Richmond want him to do - punching down instead of up. It hurts the overall thematic integrity of the song. It's too easy to blame overweight folks without asking how they got that way. I've seen many folks end up on the streets and many folks hover on the edge. They often go through periods of feast and famine as their access to food changes. I've been hungry, myself. I didn't want to ask for help and I saved every penny to go toward my education. I was living on free soup and coffee at work until, one day, I passed out in front of a VP. The paramedic who picked me up said I was the lightest person he'd lifted that day. I probably weighed 85 lbs. as a fully grown, 21-year-old woman. That's something that sticks with you. If you've ever been hungry, truly hungry, it's very hard to say no to food, later, when you have the money. It's like you are trying to pack on pounds to save for the lean times later. Now, I'm obese. I hate the hate I get from people like this man - but I very much like not passing out at work. I had to stop hating myself for it and just learn to accept myself as I am. I wish someday I could listen to a song about working class solidarity and be able to fully engage with it without feeling shamed for my body.

I am in the same boat. Just home from 20th surgery, Severe Crohn’s. But how does one stretch $23 Snap when that is they get on SSDI because they are disabled and not able bodied. Lactose free milk, eggs, (gf) bread and one more item on a gluten free low residue diet is over $30 in CO. Reality is harsh.
@tiffanymichaels2429
@tiffanymichaels2429 3 ай бұрын
@@JanelleOFS I'm so sorry to hear that. I have Crohn's but mine is very well controlled, so no surgeries. They say as soon as you have one it becomes a never ending cycle. However I have developed chronic pancreatitis that seems to be autoimmune related. I'm on a super restrictive diet because of it. Now I also have a dysmotility bowel issue that maybe autoimmune related as well. That has put me in the ER a lot and done some messed up stuff to me. And have multiple food allergies. I have several other conditions as well. So yeah groceries are expensive when you can't eat just anything. All the stuff for a specialized diet is expensive. My mom has celiac disease. She can get some of the gluten free foods cheaper on Swansons Vitamins website. But you have to know how to navigate the sight. Go to groceries in menu and then as you scroll down I believe you can click on more options for categories and select gluten free or whatever your looking for specifically. Still expensive but cheaper than some places. I can find fat free and low fat food items, but I would rarely buy them as they aren't necessary items. Well now I don't get them at all because of budget. But like I said I'm on an extremely low fat diet, 18 grams of fat a day, or else I end up in the hospital. I hope you can get some relief from the Crohn's. You should see if there are any studies for new treatments. Often if you qualify for a study they pay for room, board and travel. Plus no medical cost. As severe as yours is you should reach out to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation to see if there are currently any studies you might qualify for.

I agree with you. The irony of his song is that the social safety nets the USA currently has "Welfare" is constantly being underfunded and defended by mostly right leaning politicians, as are regulations imposed on wall street and other monopolistic oligarchs. Regulations that have been in place for decades that are meant to curb monopolies, consumer protections and ability to sue, labor rights involving safety and wages are being threatened by citizen united, super pacs, and political charitable organizations (501c) that do not have to disclose donations that are redirected to corporate lobbyists for deregulation that further threaten individual freedom at the cost of shareholders monetary interests. The irony of speaking of ill-willed, evil, greedy politicians, who no doubt had political funding from corporate super pacs, and contrasting that with Welfare, a vital and important institution that mitigates the side effects of capitalistic oligarchy- Unemployment. Capitalism only thrives at a certain percentage of Unemployment. A little too much is a recession, too little is inflation. If all the laborers have jobs, companies compete for them. Not enough jobs? Wages decrease. It's a persnickity little machine. So, you want the government to help mitigate the side effects? Don't vote for the extreme right. Ever.

Mashoque came close to something around the 13:30 mark, saying that there should be more simple and pure and honest people like Oliver Anthony in the world. I would gently disagree: it's not that there aren't hundreds of millions of those people in the world. It's that they aren't the people you see in the media. Oliver Anthony caught lightning in a bottle and was able to instantaneously transmit this message through his art to millions of those people, and they listened and told each other about it precisely because he is one of those people himself. He was completely unheard of until one fateful day last summer, and this video of this song made him an instant sensation, while bypassing the mainstream media entirely - which baffled and frightened the mainstream media. The exact type of people Mashoque describes, in towns of every size across America, instantly resonated with this song. And its message and the expression of it are so clear, so genuine, so starkly true, so wracked with a pain too familiar to too many, even tribesmen half a world away instantly understand, even before the lyrics are translated for them. I've seen the same response in dozens of reaction videos to this song, from everyone from black Americans to white Irishmen to Poles to Russians to Sindhi tribesmen. Nearly everyone who hears this song instantly understands exactly what it's saying, who it's for, and who it's aimed at. You may not have a Richmond where you live, but no matter where you live, the rich men in the capital city are picking your pockets, sometimes at gunpoint. Meanwhile, here in America where that song came from, a book came out recently entitled "White Rural Rage" that says the gravest danger of the United States faces right now is from white country people who are upset about all the things this song is about. The same media who tore this song apart as racist or xenophobic or fascist or whatever? They swooned over this book. That's because they are ABSOLUTELY *NOT* the people Mashoque was talking about.

This ties his comment directly into the meaning of this song. We all know why our country does not take care of our people. Straight up government corruption. I would like to see that all go away so that the world could be at peace for the most part. This ties in directly with Rich Men north of richmond. He is mostly correct in what he is talking about, but what he does not understand is that people have the best life in a country with good governance and high taxes. If you doubt me, go spend some months in Northern Europe and then tell me that the average American has a better life than the people there do. I have spent a decade out of the US, working and exploring in 60+ other countries. The US continues to fall further and further behind the best places in the world. The reason is that we vote R and continue to undermine and underfund our collective government, along with all manner of societal problems we refuse to address intelligently. No place is perfect, but Switzerland and Norway are MUCH BETTER than the US, it is as simple as that.

Damn straight! None of those pesky personal liberties or freedoms, to get in the way of a perfect society! That’s what we need! Hold up…

@@jackl4614 hahahaha. They have WAY more freedoms and liberty in the Nordic countries (not to mention New Zealand and Australia) because they are not constantly struggling to get ahead financially. People in Norway talk about what they want to explore in life, people in the US talk (and think) about $ like trained rats. You have no idea what you are talking about troll. Like I said, get a passport and go take a look at what the real world is like 2024.

To the point about America not giving money to its people, to some degree they do. One of the biggest things that causes that kind of welfare to fail is the like of financial education. If someone is desperate and needs money, they’ll spend it like it may not be able tomorrow. They look to fix their needs for today, not to prepare for the future. That and the current inflation rate just makes things all the more difficult to reduce the improverished population.

He's a fraud. The comment about him refusing to play a concert over high ticket prices isnt telling you the whole truth. The only reason he even said anything is because of the intense backlash at him, then he tried to put it off on the venue, but the venue proved him to be liar. His message might be overall correct, but he is putting on a front

Tell your friend that we, in America, don't understand how they can give away money to other countries without taking care of their own people first, either.
