It was definitely a game. Everyone had to put their heads down and thumbs up. Some pre-selected kids would go around and tap seven thumbs down. When they were finished, they would say “heads up seven up” and the seven would stand. The seven each had one guess as to who tapped their thumb down. If they were right, they got to join the selected students.

You're not crazy Eugene. "Heads Down, Thumbs Up, We are playing 7UP" A real game: 7 people would stand at the front of the class, rest of the class would put their heads down and thumbs up. The 7 people would then go around and tap one person each (this is where people would often "tap" aggressively. Then the people who were tapped had to guess who tapped them. If they were right, they would switch with their tapper, if they were wrong the tapper got to remain for the next round.
