#YOKE #TESLA #MODEL3
For the first time I try out the yoke steering wheel on both a Tesla Model 3 and Model S here in the UK.
It’s something we can fit for you if you want to modify your current Tesla.
I give it a go, try some manoeuvres and see what I think of it!
Thanks for watching!

I'm a "Limey" that moved to Alaska many years ago. I am lucky enough to own a Plaid. It was an impulse buy, I originally ordered one, but the build time was 6 months. I happened to be on a Business trip in Spokane, Washington. As I had never physically even seen a Tesla, I dropped by a Tesla delivery centre and spoke to the manager and enquired if they had a Plaid I could look at. That very morning a car precisely the same as my order had been delivered to them, and the purchaser was unable to proceed with the pick-up. Stupidly or not, without even a "Test Drive", I handed over the money, and instead of catching my flight to Seatle to connect with my flight back to Anchorage, I got in the car and drove it 300 miles (one fast charge on the way) put it on a ship to Alaska. I see controversy about the Yoke continuously, people who cannot find the horn, cant locate or use the turn signals easily etc. etc. People talk about muscle memory. I can't quite get this one; every action you take whilst driving a car should be considered and controlled by your brain and not your muscles. After 1500 miles, I love it. Truth being said loved it immediately, sure it will take different people different times to attune but persevere, and you will get there. Not having to move hands off the wheel for turn signals, cruise adjusts, wiper function, autopilot engagement etc., is a dream. You are all adjusting to new technology with electric vehicles, so embrace the Yoke and give yourself and the Yoke a fair shakedown. Great video makes me melancholy for the UK

"Not having to move hands off the wheel for turn signals, cruise adjusts, wiper function, autopilot engagement etc., is a dream." None of that requires half of the steering wheel to be cut off though. You can't convince that the Yoke isn't entirely for looks/cool factor. It's certainly less safe should you ever lose grip on your car and spin out of control.
@peterthomson9939

@@MadDaCube, I accept and can fully understand the aspects of your comments. Living in Alaska, I can offer some experience of the Yoke, where the roads are icy and snowy. In the normal course of driving, the"smart" drivers exercise a lot more caution due to the Moose, Caribou, and many other four-legged creatures that have no idea of road etiquette and hitting a 1500lb Moose does more than cause an inconvenient dent and sadly more often than one could wish for will actually result in your death (Airbag or not). For those that are adamant they don't like or want a Yoke, it would seem an easy fix to add the change to a "round option" in the Tesla Configurator. Still, we know Tesla and Elon's time is based on a "Cosmic" time frame and not that of an average human's lifespan. You are also correct that certain instances will make a conventional wheel easier as humans will, for the most part, revert to conditioned responses and reflexes when a "panic" situation occurs, this, in general, is never a good solution, you are now not in control. In my case, I drive knowing and being highly conscious that everything is different with the Yoke in play and that I am in a 1000 H.P. box with the ability to move very quickly. I think in the video that it is briefly suggested that he does feel in more control, that has been my personal experience; you naturally have heightened senses in the Plaid of "self-preservation", but in no sense a bad way. To summarise, it comes down to a simple "Yes or No" choice. Best Regards, Peter. (my opinions, however, might be biased as I have experience with large jets that have yokes Boeings, Airbus use Sidesticks) think one day that might be a choice on the configurator.

Not sure having to cross hands, and taking hands off the wheel to reposition to steer further can be considered ‘driving properly’……surely any move that means having to take hands off the wheel is less controlled/less safe than keeping hands on the wheel at all times, letting the wheel feed through. I agree that for most driving, though, the yoke will probably be fine, but it’s the exception cases that are likely to cause issues and create headlines, and that might be enough to give it a bad name. I liken it to trying to use FSD just now…..mostly it will be fine but times will emerge where FSD can’t handle a situation and either give up, or put you in a ditch (check YT for owners videoing their journeys…still far too many interventions required just now). So….do people want a ‘cool’ feature that may occasionally cause them a problem, or be a tad more traditional and avoid potential issues because of a ‘cool’ feature.
@vascosol7541
@vascosol7541 2 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem is if you suddenly have to do an unexpected manoeuvre at a higher speed. Something like counteract an over out understeer... That's the reason why I think it's not such a great ideia if you're not able to avoid a crash because of it...
@rogerstarkey5390
@rogerstarkey5390 2 жыл бұрын
But if that's the case and you're using a conventional wheel with one hand at the top, it's the same problem. You wouldn't be moving the wheel more than 90° at high speed anyway. If you are, you're either driving too fast, or already out of control.
@vascosol7541
@vascosol7541 2 жыл бұрын
@@rogerstarkey5390 I drive with hands 9-3 always. I have a model 3P and it happened to me, for example, in a curve the road was dirty with some oils from a before accident, and I started losing the back and had to turn the wheel as fast as possible all the way until the end to avoid crashing. I want to see people doing 2+ turns as fast as possible to avoid crashing / loosing the back without the top part of the wheel... Don't get me wrong. I love the design and I'm sure it's amazing to drive without the top of the wheel but between that and safety, I will always choose safety...

I have checked with the proper government branch here in Norway regarding the yoke in a 3 or a Y. And here you will get some problems if anything happens or you are stoped in a control because the car isn’t approved with this steering wheel from Tesla. And then you can loose on your insurance and you can get a big fine from police or the national traffic branch if they have some technical control and you are stoped there. We can only change parts on the car that are tüv approved. Then you show up at the national traffic center (Biltilsynet) and they will then review the install and put this in in the car registration card as a legal change. I did this when I put kw v3 damper’s on my car. It’s basically the same thing , but the main difference is that there is no yoke steering wheel for the model 3/Y that got an tüv approval. This regards Norway.

For me it is a no as it does not offer me anything, sure it still steers but my girlfriend still drives the way she was thought while learning. I tried to get her to slip the wheel and she either can’t or won’t. This will mean she won’t be driving for any reason, not even in an emergency. I know you said this is the way you should hold the wheel, but it isn’t. Reversing whilst looking back only may not be so easy.

These did worry me but having seen you actually drive it I appreciate that it prevents sloppy steering wheel use. The only concern I have left is how much control you have over it in an emergency... For example I'd like to see you try it on a skid pan, do you have access to such a thing? Be great to see you deal with a full lock sudden skid, can't decide if it would be better or worse... if it flies out of your grip will it be easier or harder to grab it? Interesting, looks cool though, just have those niggling concerns... 🤔

Interesting. I'd certainly like to try it. Concern would be on medium turns, you are heavily crossing your arms so have run out of ability to tighten the turn further should the need arise. That doesn't happen when you can progressively feed the wheel if it's circular. As you say insurance and potential liability in an accident would be an issue. It is no doubt a modification that the insurance company should be informed of.

The smaller yoke in the 3 looks nice, my biggest concern is finding the haptic buttons (Model S & X yoke) for blinking or honking quickly if you need them in for example the middle of a roundabout while turning the wheel more then say 90 degrees! Not blinking out when exiting a roundabout is illegal in Sweden and I imagine it is in most of, if not all of Europe... Richards test cars still have the stalks negating the potential problem. Excellent video anyways!

@barebare interesting. How though? One can argue that the drivers display in both X and S is far more complex to install, vs the modification that we see in this video. I'd find it hard to believe that an addition such as this, which arguably could increase the vehicles appeal for those who wish to have it, would massively affect the company margin or increase production time. Even if it was an additional option to add to the specs, Tesla could make money from it.

Not being a member of the Cool Brigade, I wouldn't have a yoke fitted to a car just for its looks. But it would certainly be interesting to do a test drive with one to gauge any advantages/disadvantages for myself (assuming they're road-legal in the UK). My current car's central display has spoiled me for ever wanting to go back to peering through a steering wheel to see the instruments, so a yoke would remove that problem. However, it's academic now that I've ordered a Y. 😋

It took an hour to fit but well worth the effort and now I have Apple CarPlay, Waze, and other frilly bits & pieces. Relatively cheap (£250'ish with a purchase discount code) and a really good worthwhile addition to the overall driving experience. Well, The yoke steering wheel is illegal under UK road highway code law! I checked with Tesla UK and they confirmed that the yoke will not be in the UK at all. as I thought it be illegal. The reason it will be illegal here is, Because under the highway code rules you have to maintain full control of the car when in a turning action. Thus the UK law states you must feed the steering wheel through your closed hands to maintain full control of the car to make sure you don't lose the control of the car and hit something? So no as Tesla UK said when I said the rule to them, they confirmed it be illegal under UK road law and that will not change even for Elon. I hate the ideal of a half square steering wheel anyway what a totally unsafe stupid thing to do totally opposite to logic. Plus the reason we have the rule about feeding the wheel through your closed hands is to stop you crossing over your forearms which is also illegal as you cross them it stops you controlling the turning as your forearms will be getting tangled up which would cause you for a seconds to panic and crash before you try to think to un-lock your forearms.. as we know people panic. And all this oh we often just turn with the palm on one part of the wheel or a thumb etc. that is totally illegal too, both closed hands on the wheel feeding it around even in parking or your breaking the law. Just because Elon likes it don't mean it is good. I never use one that's for sure. if they force the change to our road law and those yoke steering wheels come here, I buy a round one and have it changed. and as a another point the model 3 and Y should be banned in the UK as they don't have the driver speed binnacle display in front of their front road field of view as stated in the rules on placement of the displays all cars had to be under in history for safe driving! Rules are there to save your life and others, Those who break UK road rules to do with driving should be banned for good before they kill someone. sadly lots do die because of these bad drivers.

Great video Richard as ever. For me the yoke looks fine, it’s the lack of stalks on the Model S Plaid that I’d struggle with. Using buttons for indicators and horn and the screen for gear changing is a step too far for me.

It’s really intuitive, the worst part is the horn, which I rarely use so it feels great. Also the buttons aren’t easy to hit accidentally, you physically have to apply a force, and depending on how hard you press it, it’ll do 3 blinks, or keep the turn signal on. It’s really incredible, I love it.
@VoxelLoop

I'm not sure I'd want a yoke in the 3/Y due to it still having stalks, it looks really awkward to hit the indicator. Having it right beside your thumb when it's on the wheel like in the new S/X seems like a smarter decision, but it'd certainly break from muscle memory!
@TheJAMF
@TheJAMF 2 жыл бұрын
The stalks are still in the same position you are used to. It's still better IMHO that having capacitive touch "buttons". It becomes a debatable subjective decision, when the buttons are real ones that give positive feedback (the clicks).

interesting, i thought the Y had same wheel as 3 , my Y has a round wheel but the one you were driving had straight sides ? as for insurance companies -from experience i find they are as slippy as a eel , they will try and wriggle out of claims even if the shape of wheel has nothing to do with the claim, but would love to drive one to see what its like ( using someone else's insurance of course ) 🙂

This was my thought. I know they use the original airbag for these retrofits and I'd be concerned that the airbag was designed for the specific shape the wheel originally had.

The recent price increase in my country from Tesla has made me look at the BMW I40 , It's actually 5k cheaper than a long range model 3 ,I guess Elons vision of EVs for all has gone out the window ,lol Happy though as the BMW is well built and no need for silly checklists as its built right first time .

When you drive with a Yoke and want to corner, you should put one of your hands at the bottem of the Yoke and push up. With most round wheels you are able to push down and keep hand on the wheel while cornering. Yoke driving is just An other driving style, but I can see it work. For example at 12:27 your right hand should be/move at the bottem left corner of the Yoke, to avoid a X with your hands (what isn't safe in a crash).

Great video as always. A definite YES for me on the next Model S. Not sure if I would do the retrofit to current S unless it was a direct copy of the Tesla yoke as I think the raised portions at the top are important and the genuine one looks better. If someone like Sandy Monroe (Monroe Live), with all his auto experience, loves it, then it's got to be the way to go, especially for safety. Monroe explains the issue if you hold the top of a wheel during impact, where the air bags will break you elbows or wrists. Other manufacturers will follow. Classic case of never ask the consumer what they want.👍

I love my Model 3, mainly for the fact that it is different compared to a traditional auto. Just about everything is different, to one degree or another. Some differences are subtle, others are right there in your face. But… virtually all of those differences are not different just for the sake of difference (though some are…the fart sounds, for example). This yoke seems kind of gimmicky. Nothing wrong with that - everyone should do what makes them happy, as long as they’re not putting others at risk. So, yoke away! But for me, I don’t know… just kind of an unnecessary change, I think. And I already drive with my hands properly positioned - it’s not that hard to do on a round wheel. I appreciate your video, and I do value your opinion. I’ll have to think on it more.

Well, I asked Tesla UK, as I thought it be illegal due to the lack of control in turning! and our road laws. Yes they confirmed the Yoke is illegal in the UK because of the road law on fully controlling the steering. They said it will not be allowed here. only for Canada or USA use. Thank heck.

Hated it the first 5m you drove and it’s definitely not a normal wheel cut down..it’s way flatter on the bottom. Ridiculous idea in my opinion 😜👍 Also if you got in a skid on ice I would imagine trying to control a skid would be much easier with a proper tried and tested steering wheel 🙄

I appreciate that Richard can get “use to it” but then to claim it’s safer because it keeps you from putting your hand on top of the wheel seems weak. All the gyrations to make tight turns were a delay. Let’s see Richard do a moose test with the yoke. Race cars can have them as sharp turns are highly unlikely is my opinion.

Tbh, your response hasn't surprised me with the yoke. Well, perhaps slightly as it took only 10 minutes. When I first heard about it my thought was "oh yes." Reason being for most of the reasons you found. It makes you a safer driver, and I say that as one who is prone to adopting the "busman's grab", that is, the single hand grip over the top of the wheel. I have been very disappointed with many people's condemnation of the yoke, before even trying it. The very respected Robert Llewellyn, of The Fully Charged Show, considered it a disaster. That was very poor of Robert, who I greatly admire. Thanks for showing us the reality. that, in a fast steering car there is absolutely no problem with a yoke, provided you know how to "pommel steer" with the palm of one hand in slow speed manoeuvring conditions.

@@ArbitraryFilmings Certainly, I accept people not liking a yoke if they've tried it first. But condemning one without trying, particularly if it is a professional reviewer, is very poor judgement.

Richard. Seems like on a medium/ tight turn, you would start with the "opposite" hand on the lower corner (turning left, right hand low, turning right, left hand low) then "lift" that corner. Or, hook a thumb into the top corner and take that from 2-7 or 10-5 "o'clock"? Would seem quite intuitive to me. It stops the driver releasing the wheel as some suggest here, they say they let the wheel slide through their hands.... Well, that's an unsafe technique. I think you were spot on with your comments.
