Do you guys use acrylics? What do you think of them?

I love acrylic just because of how opaque it is,, however I tend to lean into using acrylic and gouache together

Oh, how interesting ! Thanks for the info! Although gouache is my preferred medium if I want something I can reactivate :) I got acrylics specifically because they don't, haha

@@myriamtillson I tend to use acrylic for most colours but white,, (which I'll add to mostly everything) so then there's still the gouache-look coming through,, and then I'll use the straight white gouache for highlights :)

I always hated using acrylics, not because it's a medium that scares me, but because it dries so quickly and I get interupted a lot when I paint, so it's always a massive waist of paint, which maks me feel uncomfortable. I will take a course of how to use them anyway, because I'm interested if I could mix them with gouache (like doing an underpainting with acrylics and using gouache on top of that or vice versa) we'll see how it turns out in the end. I really like to hear about your experience with acrylics. And now I really want to know what changes you would like to make with your channel. I'm so curios right now... I really wish I could support you on a monthly basis, but I can not afford it right now. But maybe in the future... We'll see. I wish you the very best :) You are always a massive source of inspiration to me.

I'm not sure if someone suggested it yet, but there's a stay-wet palette that is quite easy to use and is way more environmentally friendly. It's on my list of acylic supplies to get.

I've used stay-wet palettes in the past and I didn't love them, but maybe I'll try again some day :) I didn't feel the need for one this time, as the palette I used worked well :) Let me know how you find it if you get to try one!

I transitioned from water colour and gouache to acrylic and found it difficult. A tip I found really helpful in enjoying acrylics was from 'Greg "Crayola" Simkins'. Create a mixture of retarder and mat medium. About 50/50 in a squeeze bottle. You can apply a layer to your canvass and or use in like you would water ie. dipping you brush in it before picking up your paint. It makes the paint a bit translucent like water colour and you can create great depth with multiple layers. Best part is you can blend like oils. I started with cheap dollar store brushes but soon moved up to mid range brushes. I use shampoo to wash my brushes and it works well. Congratulations!

Your work is awesome. I used to paint in watercolour, haven't painted in 20 years and for some reason wanted to try acrylics. I am glad I did, after wc they are easy in that you can add light on top of dark, less planning, you can cover something up and redo it etc. Lots of fun!

Maybe you could make a amazon wishlist with things for the channel. Like materials you want to try for videos or recording stuff. This way people that want and are able to support you could directly see what you need. I saw such a list under a German gaming channel and I think the subscribers helped him get a new microphone after the first one was just through with life, so he could continue and didn't need to stop uploading til hewas able buy a new mic himself . It seemed like a good idea and it wasn't like he was begging or something, he just posted a list of things he actually needed and there were enough people happy to help him.

I actually recently got back into using acrylics. I used to use them frequently in high school my freshman year until I discovered watercolors, which then became my preferred medium because they were easier to take with me to art class. I haven't gotten to the point where I feel comfortable doing people portraits with acrylics (which is my favorite subject as an artist) but I've found I like doing animals more with acrylic than with watercolor since it's easier to get that saturation and full coverage. I've only done a few acrylic paintings of pets and I'm still discovering the exact method that works best for me. But I usually do like a base wash of like yellow ochre and slowly build layers, the first ones being very wet and loose while slowly building structure and opaqueness. I think it was actually from watching your process from future videos that I thought of using acrylic in a more watered down way since I had always used it practically out of the tube when I was younger and had never learned anything else. So thank you for inspiring me and broadening my perspectives of painting.

Hi Miriam, this is exciting! I used to use acrylics mostly! I found for a heavy body like paint Daley Rooney do galleria paints lovely and thick. Also the same brand brushes graduate series are inexpensive but very good. I take care to use saddle soap to clean my brushes. Nice and smooth no stray hair. Hope that this helps if you want. X don’t use water to thin paint use medium. They come in big tubs but last so long. Also white you can buy in bulk. Same brand. 😊💖💖💖love your rambling! Have fun happy painting

Forgot to add, yes you can damage real hair watercolour brushes if you use them for acrylics but synthetic watercolour brushes should be ok though better to invest in a set of acrylic brushes. One of the most affordable and good quality acrylic brushes I have used are Daler Rowney graduate or their system 3. Cass art to a set of four graduate for just under £8 and 5 system 3 for just under £12 www.cassart.co.uk/painting/brushes-2/synthetic-1/daler-rowney-system-3-500-acrylic-brush-wallet-set-of-5.htm www.cassart.co.uk/painting/brushes-2/synthetic-1/painting-product-type-brushes-daler-rowney-graduate-synthetic-watercolour-brush-set-of-4-htm.htm

Hi Myriam, just wanted to say hi and good job on your acrylic projects! I've been working in acrylics for 5 years now and it is my medium of choice, although I've branched out to other media as well. A quick tip about using water to thin acrylics: too much water (like in watercolour consistency) underbinds the paint, meaning the molecules separate and the paint can rub off. If you try to varnish with a liquid varnish, you will literally lift the paint off with the brush (I've seen it happen for someone) - it may be more of a problem on canvas now that I think about it... I would still recommend using acrylic medium or I've also used pouring medium from Liquitex to improve flow and thin the paint down. I believe pouring medium is thinner than acrylic medium.

Your practice pieces look awesome! As long as you don't have the glas palette, you can use a ceramic plate. As long as you clean it soon after painting, it cleans nicely. That's what I've been doing for a long time. The tiny houses in the end are neat! :) i hope you will find more cool stuff to paint on.

I'll be really interested to see where you go with acrylic. I have never really used it because I'm not so keen on finish you get with it, as opposed to the gorgeous luminosity of gouache. Having said that, the Atelier Interactive Acrylic paint mentioned by Mr Peeves has me really intrigued. Like most media I think there is the way it is "generally used" vs the novel ways that innovative artists can get the medium to behave. This is one of the benefits of working with a medium on your own rather than being "taught". I have spoken to a number of artists who have proclaimed that you can't do this or that with gouache but when I show them my work they say: how did you do that? I didn't think you could do that (or I was told you couldn't do that) with gouache. My answer: I just think of what I might want it to do and then experiment to find a way to do it. Of course no one medium can be all things all the time and there may come a time when my beloved gouache is no longer capable of achieving my desired goals, but until then....

Stay wet pallets are the best. Get a tray put loads of layers of wet kitchen paper on it you can spray with water so it’s not floating. Put piece of cheap shiney paper on the top and use that as a stay wet palette. Also if it has a lip stretching cling film over it and store wet paint palette in fridge. Paint stays wet for a long time. Hope this helps.

I love acrylics, they are really difficult to master but I love them. A tip for palettes is to use cardboard as a palette, you don't have to wash it and it makes for an interesting piece at the end. I have seen people use some wood pieces too as a palette. Acrylics are really fun once you learn how to use them.

Nice work. If you want to use the mat board, a couple of coats of gesso on it should help with the water issue.

I was actually hoping that not using gesso would help me use the acrylic like watercolour, but I was wrong 😅 I haven't had great experiences with using anything quite watery and thinned down on gesso, do you find you can use acrylics in washes well on gessoed surfaces?
@Kyomiibrown
@Kyomiibrown 4 жыл бұрын
Myriam Tillson To an extent, though it doesn’t really replicate watercolour that way, but will allow you to use water. If your aim is to use it on watercolour paper, what I would recommend for budget friendly practice is a non cotton watercolour paper like Canson Montval or even Seawhite 350gsm. Seawhite offer good products at great prices and you can get even cheaper seawhite products direct at artesaver. 10 sheets A3 watercolour paper 350gsm for £6.70 for example www.artesaver.co.uk/Catalogue/SURFACES-MOUNTING/Papers/Watercolour-Printing-Paper/Seawhite-350gsm-Watercolour-Paper/A3-350gsm-Watercolour-Paper-10-Sheet-Retail-Pack-WA350A310 or you can get their A4 book (which I have.) or 50 sheets of A4 for £14.90. Of course you can’t wet it quite as much as pure cotton rag but it would be ideal for practicing and better than both acrylic paper or mat board for thin washes.

Try applying a wash of equal parts retarder medium with wetting agent on the surface before painting. This allows the paint to flow better and slows drying time. That gives you more control.

I dunno, did you change things up!? I got some acrylic gouache and I've always wanted to use them for the underpainting of my gouache paintings, but they kinda intimidate me... I think the painting of the girl turned out really well! I'm very impressed! Btw, I recently purchased a "peel-off palette" for my acrylic gouache and water-soluble oils (which also won't re-wet once completely dry). Tried the palette with some acrylics that came in a paint-by-numbers kit and it was very easy to clean. The peel-off effect only seems to happen for larger blobs of leftover paint, but still seems useful. Was a cheap palette, too (got the smallest one here on sale for less than 3€: www.gerstaecker.de/MIJELLO-Farbpalette-Peel-off.html). Maybe that could also be something to try out if the glass palette doesn't work out for you.

Not really an acrylic artist (IDK I got some for Christmas and I have been playing around with them, they're different but fun!) but from what I've heard, because acrylic isn't a water-based paint like watercolors or qouache, using too much water can kind of break down the paint itself, causing it to crack, flake and lift from the canvas (regardless of how heavily or thinly it's been layered). It shouldn't be a huge issue if you're not worried about a study piece not lasting forever, but if you'd want a bigger piece to last longer and/or sell an original piece, using medium would probably be for the best
