JR Raymond released a video not too long ago about staying behind the ball. Basically his method of staying behind the ball is to make sure that during the downswing, try to brush your pinky as close to your pants/leg as you can. This also keeps your elbow tucked also.

To gt more roll, I started keeping my shoulders more closed, maybe 25-30 degrees. Also keeping my head down and using a follow-through that targets my spot and ends up higher than my head. When i stand up straight and square i have a tendency to whip my motion around the side and impart much more rotation with a higher angle. As a lower 11s mph bowler this creates tough issues with too much ball and the whip makes me less accurate towards my mark. The closed and down position allow much more up the back which means moe speed and more control...additionally less whip means more accuracy. The other advantage is i can now smooth out my shiny balls with some surface making them more controllable. So more control, 20% higher ball speed and increase aim consistancy. This was not an easy change for an old guy like me.

I believe Brad & Kyle had one of the best ever tips for changing ball roll at release. Focus on the V between your fingers. Put that V on the bottom of the ball. Closest to body = flat or up the back.

So i do see a couple things. You start to turn the ball behind your knee or behind the waist. Keeping the elbow in will help on the down swing. Another thing i see is that you're trying to create leverage with your forward tilt and arm swing. Would say focus on the power step and slide to get you lower to get the leverage instead of the spine tilt. This also helps to not throw the shoulder forward. :)

Repetition is the key, you have to keep doing the same thing until you build the muscle memory for it...6 or 7 times is not enough to keep the memory in the muscle for it. And when you are doing a 1-step drill, you are actually taking 2-steps. Keep working you will get it! all the best!

This is why I love the journey and the USA with super bright grips. The colors let me know how I'm releasing the ball / easier to read than darker balls.

Maybe Im not understanding your goal. If you pause at exactly 9:52 your hand is at the 4 maybe 5 o clock position (basically on the side of the ball) but you call it really really good. Im not being critical bc Im literally on this exact same journey as you right now. What feels good to me, turns out to be a release on the side of the ball. I had a break through this weekend though where all I cared about was the yoyo release in that I cast my hand and wrist at the lane. It took me so far out of my normal release it actually gave me a chance to roll the ball. Im excited to bowl this weekend and keep working on it. I wish you nothing but the best of luck. What you are trying to fix is very very difficult.

Hi Luis, Next time you practice try this. If you look at your video your thumb is around 10:30 or 11 o'clock. It stays that way thru your swing. That gives you your high axis rotation. Use your tape method and try this next time. Get your elbow tucked in your side. Take your hand palm facing up. With your thumb in the ball turn palm facing right and thumb around 12 to 1 o'clock. Follow straight thru your shot. Bet you will see more forward roll. I have been working on this myself. I fought with high tilt and lots of axis rotation myself. On todays toasty high friction patterns high tilt and lots of axis rotation will kill you.. Hope this tip might help you see more forward roll.

This is exactly how I got over the hump. I had this almost exact issue. Thought I was up the back, but wasnt. The only thing Id add or that I did different was on my 0-1 step approach was on the minimal backswing, I bent my arm, I kept it bent all the way to release. It made it so I couldnt get to the side of the ball.

I’m of the opinion that the more up the back of the ball you are, the less angle your rotation should have before it hits the breakpoint. My A game is a 45 degree angle before the breakpoint simply because that’s where I’m most comfortable. Getting consistent with smaller angles, like 20 degrees on shorter patterns, has really forced me to ball down to urethane for more control. If I want to have a 90 degree angle, I practically have to loft the ball and wheel it (with a prayer lol).

Look at your starting hand position. It's already on the side if the ball, try twisting your wrist to the right and feel the ball weight on your index finger. That helped me a ton, hopefully it can help you get what you're looking for!

I hadn't checked/changed my thumb pitch since I started bowling 8-9 yrs ago until recently. I have a long span (I'm 6'4") and for whatever reason my 1st pso driller set me up w 1/2" away. Over the years I've played w finger pitches, span adjustments, etc trying to make my grip feel relaxed and be able to cup it making a better forward roll. STarted bringing thumb pitch in 1/8th a time, currently at 1/8th away and picking up 1 my balls today set to 0. Each move in has made it easier to cup the ball and stay more behind/up the back of the ball at release. Always tryin to get better!

Your "really good ones", are still more side roll than I have on my "really bad ones". Your last 2 shots were around 80 degrees of rotation. I see a couple of things you can work on. 1) your offside arm and shoulder are breaking down and squaring up to the foul line around half a step too early. Focus on keeping the left arm extended forward as long as possible. 2) As your left shoulder squares up, your right hand is turning into your body... likely connected issues. Focus on keeping your palm facing down lane, and the thumb pointed at the ceiling as you release the ball. Right now your palm and thumb are facing the wall to the right at lease. In short, keep the ball shoulder back and thumb up... and keep your off ball arm exended and thumb down. Let the ball force your shoulders to square up, and opposed to squaring up your shoulders and forcing the ball to follow.

I've been living one step from the foul line for the last few weeks, practicing about 30 games a week. Had my coach watching me a few weeks ago. He told me to throw the ball without my thumb in the thumb hole. I basically did a no step drill holding the ball this way. I was forced me to stay behind and under the ball and FEEL it roll off my fingers. I also pictured the scoop on a backhoe, keeping the wrist engaged the until the moment of release. I've made progress but its a slow go to get consistent. Best of luck in making this change to your game.

Stand more toward the right 5 or 10 board. Place the weight of the ball more on your index finger too. when you roll the ball ,it should feel like rolling a backup ball.

I'm a little confused. In the beginning, you wanted the tape to look like it's rolling over half the ball. But during the swinging part, there was a lot of axis tilt. So my question is, are you trying to throw it straight with little to no tilt or just roll it to where you lessen your tilt?

I noticed the same thing, he was saying that he wants the tape NOT facing him (like the drills at the beginning) then later the tape is facing him, but he's saying "it's really really good" idkkkk

Lead with your ring finger, all the way through your target, keeping the crotch of your elbow on the target line. That's the easiest way I've found to stay behind the ball and keep it on line.

Interesting concept. If you can help me with one thing with my release, sometimes I have my wrist sometimes turns to the left and that’s unfortunately causing me to have easy gutters stay consistent with properly coming back even more importantly going forward with getting my arms/hand up with the release. I have never done that one time since I started bowling, I’m surprised. I just want to focus on consistency.

One thing I noticed on your release is that you get around the side of the ball a bit too early. One thing I did to fix this is to cup your wrist a bit as it keeps your hand underneath the ball and doesn't allow your hand to drift around it. Also, it is your starting hand position. your hand is tilted in work on tilting it more to the outside so it sits flatter.

@@billylusk3515 depends on the person. I have found that if you cup it then you don't get on top of the ball as bad. I am working with several youth bowlers that have this issue.

From what I’m seeing, I’d say that you should try to really focus on keeping your hand on the inside of the ball throughout the ENTIRE downswing, up until the point it reaches your leg while trying to keep your fingers as close to your leg as possible. The later you turn the ball, the less time you have to get around it, technically making the release more up the back
