In today’s video i’m going to be discussing Bara brith, a traditional Welsh fruit loaf. I’m going to try a supermarket version of Bara brith to see if its as good as homemade, look into the history of it and tell you where to get the best Bara brith in Wales, if you want to try it yourself.

Living in Denmark and I wont be able to buy it here anywhere but it does sound like something I should try. I am gonna be brave and try to make one myself. 🙂 We do have a traditional "loaf cake" here too called "krydderkage", basically meaning spice cake, also very moist at first, has loads of various spices and raisins and traditionally it too was served sliced and with butter. With that loaf/cake in mind I am certain Bara Brith will be right up my alley.

I recently made my first bara brith, it looked different than that, it was darker, full of raisins, wet, really, really tasty! The best with salted butter!

Since the USA is playing Wales in the World Cup, I decided to look up videos about Wales to learn more about the country, and found your channel. I've now binged about 5 or 6 episodes today, and have found them very informative and interesting. Thanks so much for these videos. Diolch!

I love bara brith, and I’ve made it myself. The bara brith I’ve had while in Snowdonia didn’t look that pale. It was darker, moist, full of fruit and delicious! The supermarket version doesn’t even come close!

The supermarket one was so dry. I’ve never had bara brith like it before. Usually it’s more moist than that. If I find a local bakery that makes bara brith then I’ll do another video to compare.

Do you have a recommended recipe? I can't even get one at the supermarket as I live in Wisconsin in the upper midwest of the united States.

Thank you. I am going to be visiting Wales and will definitely be trying this and looking out for it at a traditional welsh tea room. I have just watched your hello and goodbye basic greetings video and it’s great! Thanks 😊

If you can’t find a tea room that serves it, look for a local bakery, maybe in a local market or in one of the small towns or villages dotted around Wales.

Thanks

I have had bara brith and I too found it to be on the dry side. I’ve never tried to bake it. However, I do have a recipe for ‘my’ fruit cake where I soak the dried fruit in tea for at least 3 hours. Add an egg, sugar, whole meal flour and mixed spice, mix it together, put into loaf time, bake 45-50 mins and a nice, very moist cake is ready to be eaten

Butter (menyn) is a must ....... But it shouldn't be too dry....over baking?

@@penderyn8794 Putting butter on, absolutely! I was born in Lancashire and had Chorley cakes a lot, always thickly buttered. I’m now in South Wales and enjoy Welsh cakes 👍

@@penderyn8794 Dryness… a combo of over baking and the ingredients not being quite right. Plus, bara brith is mass produced and the recipe isn’t perfected for it yet.

You don’t have to put butter on it. But as it can be quite dry you may want to spread something on it like chocolate spread or peanut butter. Or eat it with a cup of tea to moisten it.

The "i" in "brith" makes a long "ee" sound like the "i" in "cig" (meat) not a short "i" as in "pin". If you like, "brith" rhymes with "teeth" not "pith".
@LearnWelshPodcast

You are right, if we go by standard Welsh. But locally, a lot of people pronounce it with a shorter i sound. I’m so used to saying it that way, that I forgot to modify my pronunciation for the video. Sorry about that.
@ftumschk
@ftumschk Жыл бұрын
@@LearnWelshPodcast Thanks, but those who pronounce it with the "short i" are pronouncing it incorrectly.

NO! It's bara brith, ie 'speckled bread'. and thus not a cake.

This is a topic people have been discussing for years. Some say it’s bread and some say it’s cake. I don’t care what Bara brith is, as long as I get to eat lots of it. 😀
