I have lived in CO for 30 years and eaten Beau Jo's twice. It was okay, but mostly crust. Made for carb-loading for a full day of skiing. I doubt any local would call it "iconic".

I've lived in CO for most of my life and rarely go to Beau Jos, like 5 or 6 times in 30 years. I think their thin curst is better. Now Carls Pizza on 38th ave is far superior pizza.

It's definitely iconic, but few Coloradoans would say it's particularly special. It's good pizza, but not amazing. It's mostly famous as a stop on the way home from skiing.

Same here as far a living in CO my whole life. Never been to Beau Jo's though. I have never talked to anyone that had a good thing to say. Most calling it a gimmick. Don't think I ever will go, those pizzas look pretty blah to me.

@z1g If you do go, go with someone and get a larger pizza. The crust size doesn't change, so the bigger the pizza you get, the better the proportions of crust:pizza.

i think it depends on where you live. we've always been in Arvada, so it's iconic to us cause it's always been there while everything around it has been built up. i agree tho, it's not a place like Elway's, where you're willing to get on i-25 for to get to.

As a Colorado near-native (lived here most of my life), the original Idaho Springs location is the best Beau Jo's location. I've never tried the Arvada location, but have tried a few other (non-mountain) locations; from my experience, the lower-altitude locations didn't seem to have correctly adjusted the recipe for the lower elevation. That was years ago, so I would need to try again. IMO, the best way to experience Beau Jo's is to first do something up in the mountains (e.g. a day skiing in the winter, or hiking a fourteener in the summer), and then having a pizza at the Idaho Springs location. CAN'T BE BEAT!

It is interesting you note the similarities with Pizza Hut and Dominos. I do not know if they get their cheese from Leprino Foods (Denver based company) but 85% of others do so. Leprino supplies cheese to 85% of the pizza market, including Pizza Hut, Domino's, Little Caesars, Papa John's, Hungry Howie's, Tombstone, Tony's, Jack's, and Digiorno. Their cheese and products are also used by Hot Pockets, Stouffer's, Smart Ones, and other products used in Yoplait yogurt, Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, and baby formula. Leprino is the US's largest exporter of lactose.

Some people don't like the crust since it is infused with local honey. It is different from a traditional crust. The one in Idaho Springs is the best, but I live two minutes away from one in S. Denver. Many crusts have sugar to help the fermentation. Honey is a different kind of sweetener, so it tastes and acts differently. But the honey on the crust is the best.

The pizza in this video reminds me of one from my hometown, Wheeling, IL and a business called Wa-pa-ghetti's. They formed the edges of their crust like this one, in big balls that served as handles when one ate the slice. Delicious AND VERY filling! 😋

As a "Chicagoan", I really like Beau Jo's. But I've only been to Idaho Springs. Would I say that Beau Jo's is better than my favorite Chicago area thin, thick or deep dish? No. But like thin crust, thick crust or deep dish, Beau Jo's mountain pie is a different style of pizza. I go to Beau Jo's to have something different, that tastes good, that is decidedly Colorado. Idaho Springs is a small mountain town and the restaurant is the old assayers office from over 100 years ago. For me, it's an entire package. Food, location, ambiance, (my) mind set. I recommend Beau Jo's to any friends that go to the Denver area, with the caveat, don't look for a life changing, best pizza you'll ever have. Go to experience something different. Chicago and New York will always have their rivalry. But any serious foodie, will try the other cities pizzas for the experience, not to prove their city is better than the other. That's what Beau Jo's is to me.

It's a little out of proportion when you order a small, the rolled crust will overwhelm the rest of the pie. You need to order a large and then it's perfect. When I would go skiing with friends up in the mountains in the 70's, we would always stop at Beau Jo's In Idaho Springs on the way back to Denver and chow down on a couple of large pies. Of course, we would load it up with about 3-4 more ingredients!

There is a downtown Arvada (va not vaah) with many unique local shops, bars, and restaurants, so its not such a basic suburb. There's better pizza there (Mangiami- but Detroit style) Nobody I know here eats Beau Jo's. Tourist pizza i guess?

The only reason why I know about Colorado pizza is from a very specific Kitchen Nightmares episode where the restaurant served pies with the most massive crust ha

If you’re willing to put out the bucks, then it is worth a one time experience. After that, believe me you won’t be going back again, and it’s not because the food is bad.

Heh.... Beau Joe's is like if Chicago and Denver had a baby pizza, like my kids. Sweet around the outside, substantial in the middle and kinda dense😂
