I have lived in CO for 30 years and eaten Beau Jo's twice. It was okay, but mostly crust. Made for carb-loading for a full day of skiing. I doubt any local would call it "iconic".

As a Colorado near-native (lived here most of my life), the original Idaho Springs location is the best Beau Jo's location. I've never tried the Arvada location, but have tried a few other (non-mountain) locations; from my experience, the lower-altitude locations didn't seem to have correctly adjusted the recipe for the lower elevation. That was years ago, so I would need to try again. IMO, the best way to experience Beau Jo's is to first do something up in the mountains (e.g. a day skiing in the winter, or hiking a fourteener in the summer), and then having a pizza at the Idaho Springs location. CAN'T BE BEAT!

It is interesting you note the similarities with Pizza Hut and Dominos. I do not know if they get their cheese from Leprino Foods (Denver based company) but 85% of others do so. Leprino supplies cheese to 85% of the pizza market, including Pizza Hut, Domino's, Little Caesars, Papa John's, Hungry Howie's, Tombstone, Tony's, Jack's, and Digiorno. Their cheese and products are also used by Hot Pockets, Stouffer's, Smart Ones, and other products used in Yoplait yogurt, Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, and baby formula. Leprino is the US's largest exporter of lactose.

Some people don't like the crust since it is infused with local honey. It is different from a traditional crust. The one in Idaho Springs is the best, but I live two minutes away from one in S. Denver. Many crusts have sugar to help the fermentation. Honey is a different kind of sweetener, so it tastes and acts differently. But the honey on the crust is the best.

As a "Chicagoan", I really like Beau Jo's. But I've only been to Idaho Springs. Would I say that Beau Jo's is better than my favorite Chicago area thin, thick or deep dish? No. But like thin crust, thick crust or deep dish, Beau Jo's mountain pie is a different style of pizza. I go to Beau Jo's to have something different, that tastes good, that is decidedly Colorado. Idaho Springs is a small mountain town and the restaurant is the old assayers office from over 100 years ago. For me, it's an entire package. Food, location, ambiance, (my) mind set. I recommend Beau Jo's to any friends that go to the Denver area, with the caveat, don't look for a life changing, best pizza you'll ever have. Go to experience something different. Chicago and New York will always have their rivalry. But any serious foodie, will try the other cities pizzas for the experience, not to prove their city is better than the other. That's what Beau Jo's is to me.
@f1jones5446 ай бұрын
I've been there a few times. Not too big a fan. Too much crust which shouldn't need honey to go down, and which leaves less room for cheese and toppings. It only takes two bites before you get to the crust. There's nothing wrong with the quality though.
