I'm a former correctional officer. That cable with the razors is what my last institution likes to call, a "stinger". The inmates don't drink that boiling water. They use the boiling water like a sous vide cooker. They put bags of food in the boiling water to cook it, and then the boiled water is disposed of. The stingers are incredibly dangerous. I once watched an inmate get himself electrocuted while plugging one into a wall. He survived... Barely. He was left with brain damage after the incident, but he mostly recovered
@ceruleanjaguar52982 жыл бұрын
Question WHY DO THEY GIVE THEM RAZERS!?!?
@AtlasMays2 жыл бұрын
@@ceruleanjaguar5298 I'm assuming your concern is about the usage of razors as improvised weapons, butbelieve it or not, razor blades aren't commonly used as weapons. They are, however, mostly getting phased out in favor of electric razors. As for WHY the inmates can buy razors on canteen/commissary, it's because there are strict regulations regarding personal care and grooming. Basically, facial hair is a no-go. Head hair has to be kept within certain guidelines as well, so a large number of inmates prefer to just shave their head and maintain it with electric razors, instead of having to go to the inmate barber and wait in line every few weeks. Now for how the razors pertain to the stingers: razor blades can be replaced with any piece of conductive metal and it will work exactly the same, so stingers are almost never constructed using razors. Inmate can get their hands on any piece of metal from a rusted bunk, or taken from the automotive park, or just a broken piece of chain link fence and the stinger will work exactly the same. I only mentioned razors in my comment because because it pertained to the video

One night, I dropped both leads then accidentally stepped on each one with a different bare foot. My giblets have NEVER jumped like that again, and I also have never used a death cable again. BTW, I never successfully captured Hydrogen or Oxygen.
@CrazyNerdInventor4 жыл бұрын
Making hydrogen gas is easy but you need to use sodium hydroxide and unreactive electrodes like graphite to make oxygen gas. Also, use DC power from a battery, not AC from the wall.
@covodex5164 жыл бұрын
yeah i was just about to say - electrolysis basically does not happen at all with AC power. if you read into what actually happens during electrolysis, you should quickly get why AC can't really work. but since batteries drain super fast when doing that, get a power adapter instead, for example one of those 20V ones for notebooks; they usually also contain a FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER to change the AC to DC. when I was like 14 or something i also build an electrolysis chamber out of two plastic bottles (which i connected at the bottom, so i was able to separate the gas that came from each individual electrode), an old notebook adapter and two pencil leads (which are basically pure graphite). It seemed to work great; i definitely collected some hydrogen gas. I also was able to create some chlorine gas by just dumping loads of salt into the water filled chamber so the electrodes got covered by it because the water was oversaturated (in hindsight, im still wondering why that even worked) - which wasnt a great idea overall, my whole room reeked of chlorine for a while and my mom noticed.

Electricity still flows even when it alternates, meaning enough energy and electrons are still provided to cause these reactions even if it's in smaller quantities (he also added a lot of salt, probably saturated). When I was 8, my dad left a "deathcable" on the kitchen table. I took it over to my friend's house and we shoved the exposed wires into a tomato and plugged it into an electrical socket outside. I remember at age, like, 5 or 6 I found a death cable at my grandmas house. I was unsupervised, the cable had about an inch of exposed copper wiring, probably more, it was about as thick as a broom handle around. I found it, grabbed it by the copper wiring, saw it was a cable so I plugged it into the nearest wall outlet still by the copper mind you, and proceeded to understand why you dont touch funny plugged in wires. This is the first time I've shocked the hell outta myself with electricity, but the most prominent because fucking hell that thing hurt like a bitch.

Let's go that through. - You played with electrolysis. - then it smelled bad. - then you left your family, went in your room... HA I found the mistake.
@liammm70365 жыл бұрын
So the prison kettle water turned brown from rapid oxidization of the (primarily steel) razor blades. You ever notice the tank of gas on an arc welder? That's inert sheilding gas used to protect the weld from oxidizing. Under current, metals oxidize at EXTREMELY rapid rates. The current passing through the razor blades heated the water enough to cause the water in immediate contact to vaporize into hydrogen and oxygen, and the oxygen rapidly oxidized the metal blades, resulting in rust. Congrats, William *You made tetanus kettle* Edit: this isn't even to mention the various heavy metals used in the stainless steel and the chrome plating- all of which are more serious than iron oxide. So, congrats further, William *you made a cancer kettle*

What he did is potentially deadly and carcinogenic.

The water boiling hack was basically to build an electrolytic cell. The gunk in the water was the outer layer of the razor blades being reduced/oxidized.
@Undy15 жыл бұрын
Not really - it's not actually doing much electrolysis since it's powerd by AC and not DC. There are actually electric kettles that use this very method and they don't turn the water yellow/green and/or produce hydrogen/chlorine or other electrolysis byproducts. Though personally I would still not drink water prepared in such a kettle.
@Jefferson-ly5qe5 жыл бұрын
@@Undy1 Electrolysis does occur under AC conditions, but you don't get separation of the reaction products at the electrodes. Kettles that use this principle are dodgy at best, and if it used SS electrodes I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
