Jaloviina was invented during wartime when there was a shortage of brandy, the then-favourite drink of the Finns. The state decided to manufacture four different "cut" versions of brandy (only two of which are sold nowadays): three-star (75% brandy, 25% grain ethanol), two-star (50-50), one-star (25-75) and "zero-star" (grain ethanol with colouring to make it look like brandy).

The one-star Jallu (also known as The Sheriff) is widely considered to be the one and only. There's even an "Academic Jaloviina Society" in Aalto University, Espoo (the joining fee is the price of a one-star bottle).

You can make 5 star stuff your self. Just use better brandy/ cognac as base. I would recommend Monnet X.O or similar as regular Jaloviina is based on VSOP grade stuff. Same with grain alcohol or lets just say vodka go for some top self premium brand like Finlandia, Belvedere, Grey Goose etc. You can call this "made from scratch" jaloviina as yoloviina.

Another finnish cocktail you should definitely try is kossuvissy. It's simple but pleasant, just like us finns. Add 4cl of Koskenkorva to a glass and fill it with Vichy water (or any other sparkling water of choice). If you want to go fancy you can add a slice of lemon and some ice. Enjoy!

About the cocktails. Lonkero is originally a cocktail. Gin and grapefruit soda. It was made for the Helsinki olympics because they needed something fast and easy to mix and serve to the tourists. It stuck around after that as you can see

Like quite many people before me, I'd also like to suggest trying some stronger beers. Finland has many small breweries with fantastic products. I'd also recommend giving Finlandia vodka a try since it's one of few Finnish vodkas with actual quality.

Hard liquors "need" to be in the freezer (vodka, akvavit, koskenkorva), table drinks (long drinks, beers, ciders) in the fridge, sweet liquors (Silver bullet, Kahlua, Cloudberry liquor) generally at room temperature. If it's very thick and has a high sugar content, don't chill it.

If you're friend of sweet cream liqueur I recommend Pople liqueur. Specially strawberry ice cream and marshmallow & raspberry flavors. Bottles are cute pastel color and they are good for smoothies and milk shakes. I myself mix it with a bit milk and then a bit ice. @@ruwanz Well, I'm not entirely sure if this holds true anymore, since Gambina has grown this kind of a cult following lately and has thus gotten a bit more expensive (could just be overall inflation and maybe increased alcohol taxation), though it's still very cheap by Finland's standards. The most alcohol per euro back when I wrote this comment was Marabello, but now it has been changed to lower ABV and isn't that much cheaper than before, so it's not most alcohol per euro anymore. Actually, Gambina might be number 1 now despite becoming a bit more expensive over the years. Both Gambina and Marabello are these kind of wine cocktails with a bitter vermouth like taste and a lot of sugar.

Dave! Try mixing jaloviina with flaggpunsch (you’ll find it at alko by the liqueurs) it gets a nice sweetness, but still tastes great. Ratio about 50/50. And the rest of your flaggpunsch you can heat up in a coffee maker (just put it straight in the pot, not in the water thingy) and have a glass as a dessert after eating pea soup.

If you are able to get your hands on some Sahti, you should definitely try that. It falls somewhere between mead and beer - Really good! Any manufacturer works but "Lammin Sahti" is the most popular one

One classic drink almost all finns drink when they are a bit younger is Kultalonkero (”golden lonkero”) i suggest that! And since you have grown an affinity for Jaloviina, go get the Jaloviina Long Drink!

You should try other jaloviina mixtures. One pretty known one is jallumuuli. you crush some lime in to a glass, put in some jallu and mix it with schweppes ginger ale soda. It's fantastic.

I'm American, and the sight of that bright pink UFO Shot gave me sudden flashbacks to my youth - it rather resembles a fortified wine we have here in America called MD 20/20 (also called "Mad Dog"). It's like a cross between fruity cough syrup and broken dreams in liquid form - it's strong, cheap, easily available in most convenience stores, and will very likely end with you waking up naked in a cow field, questioning your life choices through a haze of cow farts and regret. All that aside, I'm quite curious to see if your opinion of the UFO Shot has changed any in the last four years, for you gave that stuff pure "Mad Dog" face. Fantastic videos, and thank you so much for sharing.

You should try a self-invented cocktail from few years ago when I was enjoying a weekend in a summer cottage with my friends. We named it veriripuli (bloody diarrhea). The ingredients are: -Captain Morgan Spiced Gold 35%, -Sangria 7%, -Pepsi, -Mad Croc/Monster energy drink Mix them together so that the drink gets a reddish-brown color. About 5cl of each should do the trick. Enjoy.
