A gouache artist that I like to watch is James Gurney. He uses a combination of watercolor and gouache to paint with. I think you'll see that when using the gouache right out of the tube, you'll get that opaqueness that you need. Thanks for the video.

You should use synthetic, hard brushes to use gouache to achieve the opaqueness that you desire since they don’t hold much water and helps a lot on the process of layering, I hope this helps!

also, if the gouache has too much water, it will get very transparent and dissolve to each other creating a mess, but your art style looks beautiful with gouache and I’m looking forward to see more videos about gouache on your channel

it's somewhat like acrylic, you want your brush to be damp, but not dripping, to help the paint flow without becoming transparent.

Yes! Theo is using a Black Velvet brush, which is great for watercolor. However, I find synthetic taklon brushes ideal for painting gouache. Keep your gouache creamy by keeping a small spray bottle of water to spritz it. If you are using a sealed, stay-moist pallet, make sure to add a little hydrogen peroxide to the water in your spray bottle to keep your gouache free of mold. (In humid environments this in an issue.) I use M. Graham and it is great to re-wet--just give it a little time to get creamy. I've never used W&N so I don't know how it re-wets.

I used Gouache in a design class, the key is to add only a little water, the paint should be thicker, not as watery as you had it. You also need a stiffer brush. Golden taklon on is best. The black is to mix darker shades and the white is to mix lighter tints.

Even though gouache is water-soluble, it should be painted almost like oil paint. What's wonderful about gouache is that, like oil, you can paint fat over lean. That is, you can paint a thin watery layer first, and then paint over it with a thick creamy opaque layer. Unlike oil, you can easily disrupt dry underlayers if you are not careful. This is blessing if you know how to use it. Thank you, stay well, and cheers!

To avoid disrupting the layers already painted make sure they are truly dry and use a brush which contains the minimum amount of water but nice thick gouache, and use a light touch.

Teoh! I’m so happy you made this video. Gouache is personally my favorite medium to use. And let me tell you, painting on wood with gouache is a DREAM, (I rarely paint with gouache on paper) not only because the wood color allows the gouache to really POP (and being able to create your own highlights beyond on the picture itself), but because of how it both sinks into the grain as well as beautifully sits on top of it❤️❤️❤️❤️. OH and synthetic brushes work better, but I’m sure everyone else has already mentioned that by now😂

Great video Teoh! I tried gouache last year, and it was an experience! It has this opaque color like acrylics but can also act like watercolor (I only recommend this as underpainting tho). It forced me to be more decisive in my strokes since adding more layers (like acrylic) won't work! What a unique medium.

I remember back days in collage when we been teached to practice a very opaque colours gradiations to the perfection... It was a painful exercise as we had to work on the amount of painting on the brush as the colours get slightly thick on paper.... :) Now days gouache is used more freely as watercolours, but I still love the effect they leave as opaque more, for some reason there are watercolours and gouache ;) xx Thanks for sharing..

I have been watching an amazing artist on Eruda Art channel. He uses a combination of watercolor and poster paint (similar to gouache). Watch one of his speed paintings to see how he layers the paint. Gouache in general needs to be fairly thick, about the consistency of the tube paint with a little water - creamy. You can get similar from dried pans if you pre-wet and leave it for a short time. Note: if you put W&N paints in pans they will likely crack. To prevent this, mix in some humectant like honey and/or vegetable glycerin when putting in pans.

I’ve been painting with Gouache lately, including today. The results are vivid. They photograph very well. I barely add any water to the paint. The white that comes with the Winsor & Newton is weak. I bought some M. Graham Gouache in open stock and got Titanium White which is stronger. Oddly enough, some light colors dry darker and dark colors can dry lighter. It is backward from watercolor in the planning stages. You think in opposite form from watercolor but it is very rewarding. M. Graham has gorgeous colors, especially the reds!! Thanks!

I have personally been watching a lot of KZbin videos on painting with gouache and I heard that it is used best by many of you test it like oil paint as you achieve nice opaque colors throughout . Under paintings I have found are also great with gouache 👍

I liked your final sketch AND the effects of having both transparent and opaque applications of gouache; it seemed to give the sketch a more painterly effect. Your video reminds me of why I think gouache is such a fun medium. I plan to get a small set for myself, although I'd be interested in a video comparing the two sets featured in this video. I noticed M Graham's box indicated it has honey in it to prevent hardening.

well, you can actually use gouche like watercolor, after all it is watercolor... the only differ is, you can use it thickly like painting with arcylic or oil paint.. but you also have an option to use it with a lot of water to get it behave like watercolor. you can also do the same thing with normal watercolor but its going to be a bit wasteful since watercolor arent meant to be use so thickly.

Oh my gouache, this is the same thing that I am doing! I started yesterday with trying and playing with my gouache. I just got the CARAN d'ACHE CLASSIC 15 GOUACHE STUDIO and I have some tubes from other makers. I have been using watercolor but find them lacking some times. I am thinking that gouache might suit me better.

Gouache is really fun, I am currently using acrylic gouache. You can water it down just like watercolour but then layer it just like acrylic paints and not have the colours reactivate like you could have happen with traditional gouache. Lindsay Weirich, the Frugal Crafter has some really nice gouache demos on her KZbin channel. When you have time, take a look at them. I've tried gouache and wasn't thrilled with; but, I think my mistake was treating it the same as I would regular watercolors. It definitely loses the opaqueness when adding more water. Recently, I purchased a set of Golden Open acrylics. It's the landscape set and comes with a warm and cool version of the three primary colors as well as sap green. It also came with a bigger tube of Titanium white and a small bottle of Open thinner. It's a big learning curve for me; because, I haven't used acrylic paints since I was in my late teens and early 20s. Back then, the acrylic paints that I used dried so fast that if I made a mistake, I'd have to just paint over it or some how work it into the painting. I have not come across many tutorials using Open acrylics. But, I'm up for the challenge. What else is there to do?

acrylics can be used like gouache, if youre working on paper you can water them down as much as you like for a wash. the different being they wont lift or blend if theyre dry when you go back over them. you could probably replicate this greenhouse exercise in acrylic.

Gouache is quite different than watercolors in some respects. If you want a truly opaque paint, it's important to mix a tiny bit of white into the mix (except for black.) The black gouache is very important - if you want a good dark, you will need to use black because otherwise, you will get mud. Mixing blue and brown will just not do. If you want flat color for the whole painting, you might consider some additional colors because it's really hard to mix exact colors a second time. Gouache painting is a lot like drawing with the paint, unless you adopt a much looser style, which is certainly possible but it's more challenging (at least to me.) The previous poster who said that the brushes that you normally use might be problematic is right. I get better results with firmer brushes and much less water - I use one of those water brushes without the water, but any good synthetic would do. The other thing is to mix the paint in a palette if you want a flat color. "Designer" gouache means that it's used for "design" work, i.e., for later reproduction and the paints might not be light fast, (although I think most W&N paint is very light fast.) James Gurney is indeed a good source for gouache instruction. I have been painting models in gouache and I enjoy it, but it's really a test of patience because drying the paint between layers is extremely important. If you want to see some amazing paintings in a gouache-like paint, look at some images of old Persian paintings - they really did some beautiful paintings. Keep at it! It might seem frustrating at first, but I think you could do some great stuff in gouache. Don't forget that you can draw on top of gouache with pastel, charcoal pencils and colored pencils, and I suppose, some markers.

Looking back, was the Faber-Castell paintbox you used years ago gouache or were they just watercolors with filler? I have a variant of that box where the watercolors are chalky. I kinda keep that box because it had magenta on it, and its white is kinda decent for highlighting.

I was introduced to gouache through James Gurney's amazing videos. Well worth a look. He also gave me the idea of mixing watercolour with white gouache to turn transparent watercolour into opaque. A neat little trick and great for putting final touches and highlights onto watercolours ;)

Browns are easy to mix. You just have to keep in mind that when working with gouache, you need to mix more than you think you need, because it's almost impossible to mix the same color twice with gouache. Just make sure you have enough to finish your project, and you should be fine.

@@painovoimaton I was told, one wants the consistency of milk when it comes to mixing water and guache. That's when I went to art school...which was the first time I was introduced to the medium. Also used it in an airbrush.

@Yasmine S. Good points. I stand corrected. I wonder if my "milk" consistency was more related to the airbrush coarse I took "way back when" in art school for easier flow. But yes, the consistency depends on what one is looking for when it comes to how opaque one wants the paint to be.

From what I have seen (but have not tested yet) one of the screwy things about gouache is the two different whites ie titanium and zinc. Supposedly zinc is better for mixing and titanium is better for highlights but (and this is a BIG BUT (LOL)) the tube of it that most sets comes with is the titanium. This might be a good subject for you to do a video on (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

Strangely enough, the winsor and Newton set teo has (and that I got) comes with Zinc. I had to buy my titanium white separately

Try to not use gouache exactly as you would watercolor. Use it more like acrylic. Basically, just use less water. I use white but I don't use black either.

Hey! Maybe yu should use a bit less water to your gouache. I use it since school and you can play actually between many water as watercolor to creamy texture to have a strong color over others. I use others brushes for gouache because watercolors ones hold too much water (especially animal ones), generally synthetic brushes and very not expensives ones. I hope you'll go on with gouache, it's different and addictive as watercolor. Take car of you and your family :-)

gouache uses pigments that are not quite as finely grounded. thats what gives them opacity, and causes them to behave differently with washes. theyll seem heavier and wont do the same spreading affect that watercolour has.
