Thank you for bringing attention to the diversity of Pennsylvania Dutch/German-American cuisine and cultural richness. It is often overlooked or thought of negatively. An important thing to bear in mind is that Pennsylvania farmers are a huge backbone of the U.S. agricultural industry and this type of food is plentiful, affordable, often seasonal, and provides plenty of energy for those working backbreaking jobs. You ever want to take a spin around the Polish-American food scene in Pennsylvania, I'd love to give you a tour. 😊

Breakfast and lunch are cheaper than supper. Their breakfast is best but I also love the brisket that you can get at the lunch seating. I used to go there a lot when my husband was living and still try to go there about four times a year. The woman who's serving him the pig stomach is Fannie, a lovely little lady who's been working there forever. If you want to come to Lancaster County for the smorgs stay at the Olde Amish Inn, or the Fulton Steamboat hotel. Dienner's is just a quarter mile down the road on Rt. 30, on the left. Shady Maple is about 25 minutes away.

Shoo Fly Pie is made with a molasses cake like filling. Very delicious. I loved it growing up. Also the name I think comes from the flies being attracted to the sticky sweetness of molasses. And during the baking you definitely have to fight the flies. Thus "shoo fly pie."

There's an Amish market where I live in Balto, Md that serves the meatiest pork ribs. They leave the tenderloin on the rack when they cook them. If they have a condiment section I'd highly recommend buying a jar of their sauteed onion jelly and if they have a candy section ask if they have any vinegar taffy, my neighbor was from Scranton and used to make it and drove all the kids crazy when she did. Chocolate covered bacon is also a treat.

The furniture was all beautiful stuff they had made. And the food...best pot roast ever. I was absolutely addicted to it. I make awesome pot roast but I can never quite match theirs. Realistically it would be more like "beloved KZbinr found living off the grid, after getting lost deep in Amish farmlands." Which reminds me of a great day when I was a young teen. My family vacationed at a Resort in Amish Country every year. Dad was an avid golfer & they had 2 courses, amazing food, nightly shows etc. But we always would go exploring & so we went for a ride into Amish farmland. I never knew & I don't think most realize how once you get off the tourist area, it becomes rural. It was stunning, rolling hillsides and pastures. Then Mom noticed there were no longer street signs, and all you could see was similar looking Amish farms. We didn't get too worried at first, until it was getting near sunset & we had no clue how to get back out. Eventually we finally spotted an Amish man walking back to his house. Dad quickly jumped out of the car, and let me tell you, he did NOT look happy or like he wanted any part of this. Thankfully my Dad could get along with anyone, and next thing you know this guy is slapping my Dad on the back, waving his arms (giving directions) and he says to wait. He went in to get his family, along with TONS of fresh produce that he gave to us and wouldn't take a dime from my Dad!! So Mom & I got out of the car, there were introductions all around. Can still see their little girl looking at my Mom's makeup and quaffed hairdo (ok it was the 70;s lol) like she was an alien. We all had a lovely visit. They wanted us to stay for dinner, but we were now rapidly losing the sun, and all felt it best we head out, as there was no streetlights and as mentioned signs. To this day I wish we stayed for dinner! And the produce included the best corn I had in my life! Don't know if anyone is still reading, but dang, I just went full blown memory lane....what a great memory I hadn't thought of in years!
