Hoyo Games are a special breed. I started playing Genshin (2 month's after it's release while waiting for another game) with the rule: the moment the game puts an obstacle before me that it wants me to spend money to solve, I'm out. I still play Genshin (and started HSR and ZZZ the moment they released), all completely F2P and i'm having the best and least predatory feeling gaming experience in all my life (and i'm old af). Almost all of the money spent on the game is just driven by "want" and not by need. People just collect characters that they don't even end up leveling and playing at all or overpower them to the point where the game effectively gets worse (because one of the main criticism of Genshin and ZZZ is that they're too easy... yet people spend thousands of dollars to make their characters even more powerful). People essentially spend money because "it's just what you're supposed to do in these games" without ever considering if it actually is needed to enjoy the game.

Well holy shit. Rewatching playthroughs made me realise that Anby lore hints are already given to us right at the beginning. Her procedures taken in the hollow are akin to those of the HIA (we learn this in their training course). The glaring example being, recording logs in event of low survival rate and shapeshifters (suspicion towards Billy) we have yet to see ingame. Perhaps she was a HIA member before?

You probably already know by now, but story missions will often give you playable characters that are relevant to the missions. Basically, you can use them for combat despite not owning them. That means, once you reach far enough into the story, you can actually play as Jane Doe (the rat woman) in a special story mission.

As much as I hate the trend of gacha games and how they just take and take from your wallet, I have to admit that Mihoyo knows how to make a pretty enjoyable game attached to it as well. A genuine praise I give is that they make some really fun stories and combat and this game does that the best I've seen out of them. Can't wait to feel the _pressure_ of tomorrows stream!

In defense of gacha as a concept: a game that never ends requires never-ending funding to keep the development going. Gacha may be preferable to a subscription fee for many since it offers the option to play for free and just have to be careful with your in-game currency. That said, there are a lot of really lazy gacha games that are gacha first and game second, like way too many to list, and that gives the entire model a bad name. Hoyo and Kuro seem to reliably make a good game first and then add a gacha system at the end rather than the other way around, which is why people tend to have pretty positive impressions of Honkai/Genshin and WuWa while still vocally hating on gacha as a whole. This has been my TED talk.

@@flarpo11 As far as I know, Hoyo's first ever game (Houkai Gakuen) was a one time purchase and it nearly bankrupted the (at the time) very small company. They later reworked it into a gacha and saw great success, which allowed them to make bigger more expensive games, such as Hi3 and later down the line Genshin, which was the company's attempt at pushing the limits of mobile gaming while also bringing to life their first ever indie game The Legend of Saha

Just wanna say that Honkai impact 3rd (the game the chatter saying there is a similar hoyo game but older) is not THAT predatory. There is some of course, but Mihoyo, outside of Genshin(until recently anyway), is fairly nice with players. What's different with Hi3 is that the player need more time to invest in the game, mostly because it is old, but it's really worth it, not for everyone tho

I just started playing this today myself! Started because of a later character. A hottie voiced by Alecks Le. The combat is so snappy and has so much OOMPH! Maybe seeing you play the main story could be cool now and then? I understand not wanting to become a Gacha channel.

If you liked Zenless Zone Zero, you're gonna like Hoyoverse's other games as well. (Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, etc) They all have a certain feel to them and different gameplay, but they're all of pretty high quality. (Note, i never bought any micro transactions in any of their games but put like hundreds of hours into them)

Honestly cant confirm, I have tried Genshin on 3 seperate occasions, twice before ZZZ and once after, and it felt really dull compared to ZZZ. I don't think it's a bad game, just not really my thing. ZZZ on the other hand is absolutely amazing and I have sunk atleast 100 hours into it.

Honestly, if Phis is getting into gachas... I would love to see him try out Limbus Company. It has that excellent horror, story, and is one of the best f2p friendly gachas currently out there. Plus that could be a avenue to try out some of Project moons other games which are even better.

Zzz is a game that asks for your time and money. Only one of the two is required if you want to beat the endgame, and you can choose which. The grind is only present during the late game, and it becomes less painful with each update. If you plan to play casually, you needn't spend a dime.

ZZZ is one of the best games I played recently, I don't give a damn about the gambling, I didn't spend a single dollar and I got 3 S Tier characters from the promotional banners just doing stuff and missions (Qingyi, Jane and Zhu Yuan). Never thought Mihoyo would make such a cool game after.. Genshit Impact.

Genshin is so f2p-friendly that I started buying costumes of some chars once in a while just to not be a leech. I like the TVs too, a lot. That's my kind of retro tech!

Being against gambling is a sensible sentiment. But you seem to be driven by preconceptions that simply aren't true. As of now, you get hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of story (with unrivaled quality writing, animation and voiceacting) completely for free (across genshin, HSR and ZZZ). Not to speak of the genuinely fun gameplay. Nothing in these games is locked behind money... not the game itself, not the updates and not the characters. If you want more characters than you could possibly find the time to play and make them more powerful than you would ever need, you can spend money to get stuff faster (which is stupid because these are singleplayer games and you just pay to get bored of the game faster). In some fighting games you have to beat fighters to unlock them: In pokemon, you need to catch pokemon to play them... in gacha games, you need to earn currency to unlock characters. Not getting access to everything is pretty normal in games and very much part of what a game is (getting rewards, progressing etc). In fact, in pokemon, you NEED to buy the other version to get all the pokemon (or get friends to buy it and trade with you) and in fighting games you often NEED to buy DLC to get new characters... and excuse me for making that assumption, but i guess these are practices that you're totally ok with, but that are more like what you criticize gacha games for than gacha games. I've been playing Genshin, HSR and ZZZ for free and have not once felt like my gaming experience is any worse because of it (on the contrary, the games would be too easy if i'd spent money and anything i achieved in them would feel less special because i just used the credit card and not the tools the game provides for me).
