Lovely simple design Mike, as always I look forward to seeing how it develops. I fear it might be a little limited but still a lot of fun. Best regards

Great vid! Every time I go to work on my layout I keep thinking what I ‘could’ do if I had ‘x’ and then you drop a vid and I realise I’m overthinking my design and I don’t need ‘x’ to make a good working layout. Thank you for bringing me back to the basics of good honest layout design.

i have recently moved over to N gauge for reasons of space. This meant replacing everything. Some soul-searching ensued because of the price of everything. I need reliability (=Kato on Unitrack) but New locos/multiple units are prohibitively expensive. Should I abandon the hobby? I gave that some serious thought. Thanks to you two, the solution has presented itself. Kato chassis and your 3D-printed range of loco & DMU bodies. A fleet of powered stock, unlimited liveries, Valhallah! Thans again for rescuing my faith in this marvellous hobby.

Nice Inglenook layout... Funny thing you were saying about Kato locos and their good running... I have a good mixture of Farish, Dapol , EFE and the new large prairie tank from Sonic..some run excellent, others well.?? Just when these manufactures catch up with the Japanese.?? They cost a fortune and brake easily..? I would not consider modelling overseas railways, simply because its not my heritage, but can see where you are coming from, regarding the operational running of these superb models..

I created a similar N Gauge layout with an Ingelnook on one end and a two track fiddle yard/team track on the other end. It was about 7” wide and 34” long using Kato Unitrack. Kato makes a good product.

Interesting bit about the goods shed Mike, I've tried to incorporate one into layouts in the past but found that the one I built looked too big and so I took it off. I have a Ratio kit which is pretty much the same size so it's just been left unbuilt. Your shed looks about right so possibly much smalled than the ones I've tried. Strange because I don't think mine were models of particularly large sheds.
@BudgetModelRailways2 ай бұрын
@@johncherrington6080 in real life they were pretty big, even the small ones. We compress our track plans when we make layouts and then try to fit in full scale size buildings lol

@@BudgetModelRailways thanks Mike. My problem was that I had what was a relatively small oval of track with a siding inside and due to its size my shed seemed to dominate the layout and did not look right. I scratch built an engine shed loosely based on the one at Wallingford on the GWR and it was much smaller by comparison even though I had the dimensions correct. I'm currently building a new layout in OO based on an Inglenook configuration but with 4 sidings one of which a station platform. I have a headshunt/run off of around 5 feet so not too bad given that it fits on top of an old office desk so rougly 4 x 2.5 feet. Keep up the good work Mike.

The chassis are £20-25 from Kato, the bodies we sell on our website for £10, so inc a bit of postage about £40 for a very nice, great running little diesel Shunter

That looks like a Mehano controller, can those also be used with Kato Unitrack? Seems harder to find cheap controllers advertised for N than for OO
@BudgetModelRailways2 ай бұрын
It's mehano, I've used it with Kato. Our usual controllers, details on our website will also work with unitrack.
@edgein78922 ай бұрын
Running trains is good but shunting is even better. Shame about the Arnold loco, they're normally quite good but I do have to say I have my doubts about the Mehano controllers. They mostly work fine but I've noticed they don't really go along with some shunters here. Even though Mehano made some fine models this controller seems just right for the average starter set but there are better ones out there. Arnold used to produce transformers with a shunting option for their Simplex locos, the ASS. Sounds a bit weird in English though but combined with a special switch which would enable the loco to uncouple automatically.

I usually use our own excellent PWM controller, but wanted to try something different
@edgein78922 ай бұрын
@@BudgetModelRailways I bought a couple of these controllers a year back just to try them out but I'm not crazy about them. Same goes for the basic Hornby controllers, I bought several Arnold sets for the locos but not too crazy about these controllers too but they're cheap so it's not all bad 😄

Are you going to do an update on the shed layout soon? It's a fantastic layout and it was going very well! I know you prefer N by now and I dont blame you but given that it was a project already ongoing I think me and many others would really like to see the progress if there is any :)
@BudgetModelRailways2 ай бұрын
Sorry, it's being slowly broken up. The shed needs a lot of work, insulation mainly, and the layout needs to be removed to allow that. It was never built to be movable, it evolved, so there is no way of saving it. When we rebuild in the shed it will be in N.

@@keithwreyford999 I've had a bit of a religious conversion to N, it just works so much better for me, it's cheaper and takes less space, so in many ways meets the budget ethos much better. I'm currently selling off most of my OO. Sorry
