Apparently I managed to get my pre-ordered Sony 20-70mm f/4G a couple days early, not complaining here! Thanks Local Camera Store!
Decided on a whim to go out and get some real-world impressions of how I am planning on using the lens when I go out for bigger adventure projects. So just a short little hike this time, Mt. Muscoco, Colorado Springs. 4.2 Miles round trip, 1200 feet of gain, 8000 ft peak elevation, not too shabby!
Note, I purchased this lens with my own money, it was NOT provided to me in any way.
Filmed with: Sony 20-70mm f/4G, Sony FX3, Sony A1, Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II (for 2-3 shots)
Drone shots done with: DJI Mini 3 Pro
Edited in Final Cut Pro
Color Graded with the Sony S-log3 to Rec.709 LUT and the Mark Bone Sony Cinema LUT

You captured it beautifully. I used to run those trails every day and had to move in the fall. Been missing them very much! This video took me right back!!

Great content! This is by far the best real life test of the sony 20-70 lens on yt. Appreciate you did climb that hil twice as you had to not only get there but also film yourself. Some of the shots in active mode are gimbal close. Impressive. Did you notice a difference using active mode with native vs third party lenses, especially zoom ?

Thanks! And I unfortunately don’t have any third party lenses so that’s not something I can really check for. Thanks for watching!

I’m surprised I got mine 2 days early, honestly! I’m super impressed with it for video! Waiting on the Lightroom profiles to fix the vignetting at 20mm in photo, but other than that I think it’s basically my perfect lens for outdoor stuff!

Thanks for the video Kevin! What kind of drone do you use for your aerial shots? Great quality video

Yep, happy to be making them! I used the DJI Mini 3 Pro for this video, super solid little drone. I have a drone comparison video coming probably next

I lived in CS 1973-1976. Are the rocks really that red or was that added in grading? Nice cramp on-site. You need a pair of sticks. I’ve used the 24-105 ever since it was released, but will likely trade out due to the lighter weight of 20-70. I’m in my 70s and every oz matters now.

Lots of very red rocks around here, so not really added in grading! And I ended up carrying my trekking poles on my pack the whole hike, probably could have used them but I didn’t really feel like i needed them.

Great content. What camera do you enjoy the most, your Sony Fx3 or Sony a7iv
@KevinFedde
@KevinFedde Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I use the cameras for different purposes, with the A7IV being kind of my ‘personal’ camera and my FX3/A1 being my work cameras. So it’s a bit different mindset when using them. I think I do like the A7IV more, but the FX3 is definitely a better video camera.

@@KevinFedde what's your take on the canon r6 mark 2
@KevinFedde
@KevinFedde Жыл бұрын
@@MODESTYXO205 it’s a really decent camera, I just don’t like Canons lack of RF lenses right now. I owned an R5 and R6 for over a year and really liked them for photo, but they were missing a lot of video features that made Sony more compelling at that point for me.

I used to own the Sigma 24-70mm. I loved the image quality on video and photos but it was a bit heavy for me for all day use when traveling, so I sold it. Now I kinda wanna get the 20-70mm lens; it looks like a great lens.

So far it’s been SUPER solid. I’ve used it on a few jobs, and on one winter 14er video (upcoming) and am very happy with it so far.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried it, didn’t like it due to the lack of range. Great for other situations, though!

@@KevinFedde Everybody's needs are different, of course, but I suggest you do your own analysis and not rely on gut feeling. From my perspective, even though the Tamron range is smaller than Sony's, it's still a more useable lens. I bought both lenses and was shooting with them in my typical situations and I'm keeping Tamron. In my view that range is sufficient, the f/2.8 aperture is highly desirable, and the lens itself is more pleasant to shoot with. Going though my LR collection, I found 20-40/2.8 covers about 70% of what I shoot. The runner up with 14% is covered with 100-400mm lens, and the rest is covered with mostly primes. When shooting with 20-70/4 lens, I found only 10% of pictures were taken in 40-70mm range, half of which can be just as good taken at 40mm when moving closer. Overall, there are very few situations where 40-70mm range at f/4 makes a difference.

@@KevinFedde there ain't no perfect lenses, but with everything I have it looks like 20-40 can stay on camera longer than other lenses. The other thing, even if some lens is the best fit for what you do, you still need changing lenses just to keep your dopamine level up.
