Yes...then add vinyl sheeting (of course you could use acrylic sheeting to retain high visibilty) as large doors with hinges to keep out pollen and rain, but also put screens on the bottom before installing floor boards to keep out bugs!!! 🙂

Saturday morning at the Ringworm Saw Mill. Fine weather for ducks lately in the Thumb. I have my milling horse loaded & ready for the rain to stop. I came up with an idea to mill 4" boards on my 10" table saw without flipping boards. I have a few tons of rcently downed maple & pines to mill too. Make a round picnic table next!

Build a smoke box. A long box that you can fit a dozen 2×12 inside and a flexible dryer hose connected to a smoker. If you leave stuff inside for a day, it kills the bugs and the low slow heat might even draw out some moisture from green wood. If you use a good smelling smoke wood it will also give that scent to the smoked wood. I saw this in a recreation village from the 18th century, used to kill bark beetles, dry wood, and to give a nice scent to common woods.

I happened to be browsing chainsaw parts the other day and noticed they now have a debarker that attaches to your chainsaw where the bar normally goes. It looks like a planer type blade assembly that's driven by your chainsaw. It sure would save time on stripping off bark with a draw knife 😁

I got the EZ Rails from Granberg when I first got my mill. Within the first log I discovered that they are a bit of a pain. Getting all those leveling bolts just right and level takes more time than I expected (whereas a ladder is prtty much drop and go). I also found the the little pieces of aluminum that join the sections together bend really easily. So i've had a bunch of times where there is a kink or swoop in my lumber where the rail sections join together. It is a lightweight system so there is that benefit. Good video!

Ryan, don't know if you take the time to read all these, but, you DO know that the bars are interchangeable, yes? Put a short bar on the big head unit and use the small mill until you need the big mill. Then swap out the short bar and short mill for the long stuff. Retire the small head to backup and limbing. It would increase your productivity, and I know that doesn't matter, AND it increases the fun factor. That's what matters.

I'm just beginning to mill logs because we had a storm in Aug this year that brought down HUNDREDS of logs through our tiny creek( was about 3 ft wide made it over 100 ft wide) and your videos are just what I needed to see and hear thanks a million. I'll do much better now

To solve the problem of felling wedges falling out when shimming my mill, I cut an old sheet of 1/4" plywood into 2" x 24" strips and painted the ends orange. Now I just shove them all the way through every so often. If my helper gets too ambitious and puts it too close to the chain, no big deal since it's wood.

You could create a hybrid system where you have end plates like your old ones to set the height of cut at each end and use the adjustment screws to stop the aluminum rails bowing.

That mill looks cheap, and like a bigger hassle to set up and use than the one you made. I'm curious to see how long it last to some honest use. I have my doubts tbh.

Gets a new granberg mill and now gets haha “board ”twice as fast. I think that is called red rot. If there are tiny mushrooms on the first couple feet of the tree that’s usually an indication. My experience is it keeps spreading even after the boards are cut. Mine wouldn’t burn and basically became landfill. But targets is a great idea!

I'm pretty sure you can send that pine(?) tree sample and your photos to MSU and they can identify the mold, spores or fungus for you. They have a pretty good agriculture outreach. Give a go.

Based on what another comment said, get different leveling bolts instead of those. Your impact will eventually mess up the flat heads on them, so it would be a good idea to get something with T25 (star) on the top so you don't wear them out after daily use. Great videos!

Awhile back I suggested building extensions for your steel tubes. The way these new pieces hook together is kinda what I had in mind. The only big difference would be using angle iron for the connector. Using a piece of angle iron that would slide into your steel and 1/4" or 3/8" thick so you can drill holes and thread them in the angle iron. You would need to grind the shape corner off the angle iron so it fits tight to the inside of the steel tubes. With holes drilled to match the holes in the andle iron, you bolt through the steel into the angle iron with bolts coming through from one side and the bottom. This would align the two sections straight on both the sides and top. This would leave a smooth top to run the mill on. With two more steel tubes as long as the first set you could mil logs twice as long. Granted you would have to mill such logs where they fall. You have to do this occasionally now. With your new saw and being able to mill larger diameter logs this may happen more often now. Being able to make longer lumber can be handy for some uses.
