I have a fun story about a Maison Louis Marie scent. When I was a kid I had a perfume making kit and I made the most amazing rose perfume. I had spent YEARS looking for something even remotely similar but I never found anything so I eventually gave up... Come last week I was exploring some shops I had wanted to look at and I found Maison Louis Marie Antidris Cassis perfume. I had to smell it a few times but I kid you not it smells EXACTLY like the perfume I had made so long ago. It is such a nostalgic sent for me and I plan on getting the candle version soon! I really enjoyed this video, as I always wonder about those super expensive candles and if they are worth the price.

i'm a diptyque stan, feu de bois is a top fave 😍 i think you might like their vanille candle too!
@davidhunternyc1 Жыл бұрын
Diptyque is legendary. Diptyque's candle scents and fragrances waft like butterflies but, however, they're highway robbery. Here's why... This from Diptyque: "In addition to natural fragrances, Diptyque candles can also boast a high quality that is hard to match." Read between the lines. Natural fragrance does not mean essential oils. If Diptyque used essential oils they would say so. Diptyque uses synthetic oils, which almost all high-end perfumers use. There's an argument too that pure essential oils don't have a strong throw but that's another discussion. My main critique with Diptyque is that their candles are dry and very little oil is used, whether synthetic or natural. Many candles have little to no smell at all. Diptyque was once a small company making small batch artisanal candles. The amount of oil in their candles used to bead up on the wax surface. When lit, their candles filled the room with extraordinary fragrance. When unlit, their candles had a strong cold throw. No more. Diptyque's quality is gone but it's no surprise. Diptyque expanded to some 100 stores all over the world and with expansion comes compromise. Diptyque candles are mass produced, of poor quality, and sold for exorbitant prices. Then there's this. "Diptyque candles are all hand-poured and made of high-quality paraffin wax." This is crazy. You're paying $80 for a candle made with petroleum based paraffin wax. Is this paraffin wax from China or from France? Does it matter and how do we know? Oh, and thank you Diptyque for not using "poor-quality" paraffin wax. I can't make this stuff up if I tried. Of course, Diptyque couldn't use soy wax or beeswax because this would be too costly for them and they'd have to have to raise the price beyond what is already extraordinary. Better to pinch pennies at the factory and maximize profits. Sounds like something something an equity firm would do, not an artisanal French candlemaker. It goes on. "Each candle is carefully prepared individually and hand poured to ensure that a qualified person can spot any problems and flaws." Does it matter if a candle is hand poured or poured from a machine? Again, with 100 stores and candles being made en masse, all that matters is precision. Great candles must use high quality wax, high quality oils and fragrances, and high quality wicks centered on their bases. This is marketing gobbledygook and Diptyque knows it. It gets worse. Sure enough, in 2005, Diptyque was bought by... you guessed it... a private equity firm, Manzanita Capital. Their CEO, William S. Fisher's worth is $1.85 billion. He worked at the Gap and he's a hedge fund manager. It's Fisher's job to maximize profits at all costs, definitely not what I would associate with an artisanal, high quality candlemaker. There are salaries to be paid. I'm not talking about the pittance that Diptyque's staff are paid, though they're the heart of the company and should be well compensated. The real money is made at the top of the food chain. It explains why Diptyque's candles cost $80 and if you want to buy a lid for the candle, that's an extra $30 - $60 for a cheap piece of... whatever. If you're not careful, you can spend up to $140 for a 190g paraffin wax candle. Like I said, highway robbery. Diptique is no longer a French candle company. They are owned by a London-based conglomerate. Diptyque's gorgeous looking products and their extraordinary history keeps them from being a 1-star company, but their candles suck purple Twinkies. There are many better alternatives at all price points. Here are a few high-end candlemakers that use quality ingredients: Cire Trudon, Mad et Len, Maitre Gantier, Christian Tortu, Le Labo, & Carrière Frères ...and many come with lids.

My favorite high end candle is Speakeasy by the Harlem Candle Company: Top: Cardamom, Smoked Incense, Pimento berry Middle: Saffron, Licorice, Plum blossom, Tobacco leaves Base: Palo santo, Patchouli, Vanilla, Dark chocolate I mostly get tobacco, woods and vanilla from it, like Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille but woody. I love it so much I have the Reed diffuser too.

I really enjoyed this video 💜 I love a fancy candle but don't very often splurge on the super expensive ones. My very favourite home fragrance is the papier d'armenie paper incense. Specifically the blue one but the pink one is lovely too. It's amazing that one tiny strip leaves a lovely, unique, classy not at all "hippy incense" scent in my apartment. I have stopped buying Diptyque and Byredo because their wax is partly made with paraffin, a petroleum-based wax which gives a stronger scent throw but is bad for the environment. Wondering why there is no Trudon in the list? Its heritage goes back to 1643 France versus 1961 for Diptyque.

Thank you for your insight into these candles. I enjoy Maison Louise Marie line, and suggest trying Swiss Alps Le Refuge d'Ernest candle from them. It has a deep smoky, fireplace scent. I'll light it, let burn for a while, then blow out once the room is scented. Doing this has help extend the life of the candle, so I can saver it more. Also, have you tried PHLUR? They rebranded and started making candles again. I had three of their old ones that came in the white ceramic spheres (two Howl and one Claremont), and they where my favorite, but looking forward to seeing what new scents they release.

I have Bibliotheque from Byredo and it burns so badly, smells so synthetic as well so same, won't repeat on their candles ever again lol. I repeated on Feu de Bois and it's a fantastic scent for Autumn /Winter, it's just that as it sits longer on your shelf it starts burning badly and smelling waxy so I would personally suggest buying the smaller version. I also like Mimosa and Figure but would highly suggest to stay away from Jasmine and Nargile if the room you're planning to have them is small. They are extremely strong, even stronger than what you smell in the shop and can easily give you an headache.
@TRWoods9142 жыл бұрын
@@loctvuong ~ I have a small Biblioteque candle, and I like it. I don’t like it on me in perfume formulation, but the candle is nice to my nose - just very expensive. I pick up plum, leather, and violet right away. It’s sweeter than I had imagined. Somehow, it feels like someone has left an extinguished pipe in the room, but it’s pleasant and I sense vanilla - not a sickly gourmand vanilla. I’m not convinced it reminds me of a library, however. It’s different from all my candles. The small size is strong enough to fill a large room. I can even smell it unlit from a distance. Hope you get to try it. I’d say it’s sophisticated yet edgy. Very unique, in my opinion. I’d purchase it again, and I’m very picky about scents because I get migraines easily. Also, be sure to keep the wick trimmed accordingly so you can get a clean burn if you try it. No headaches here, and I don’t sense anything synthetic. That would drive me crazy. But that’s just my experience.

My new obsession is siblings candles. I like that I can just reuse the vessel, but they generally make some good scents, the burn is even and they use ingredients that don't cause irritation to me personally I have an issue where I'm sensitive to certain irritants they put in perfumes and candles, but these ones have been great for me.
