I gave the curly girl method one last shot over a longer period of time, to see if any of the wave I had as a teen would re-surface.

I think our hair is healthiest in its natural state. In your case, straight. Your straight hair looks shinier, healthier, less oily and more flattering on you than the stringy waves you are trying to create. I tried curly girl 15 years ago cause I hated my big poofy hair and I discovered i had loose wavy curls. Healthy hair care is the point and not fighting what God gave us. You embrace healthy natural hair care and wearing it in its most naturally flattering shape. Thanks for the fun videos and for being open to trying new methods.

YES. I see a lot of comments where people seem almost desperate for everyone to be curly. Curly Girl is one method, and is not a miracle cure, just a gentle hair routine. The online hype means people are desperate for it to curl on everyone, every time ... like someone not having curly hair is a problem!

@@likkleginger I think it comes from some of us curlies believing that our hair was just frizzy and struggling until we discovered that we had curly hair. I used to think that if I brushed my hair enough or conditioned it enough, it would become straight and smooth. I bought so many products and brushes as a teen. My hair took an hour to straighten. I didn't even consider once that my hair could be wavy/ curly. Many of my friends have hair that look like mine before CG, and I wonder what would happen if they stopped flat ironing it/ straight perming and tried to encourage a curl. Now that I discovered my natural hair, I spend next to zero time on it. I wash, condition, plop and air dry. Sometimes I use gel and on special occasions I will finger curl the odd stubborn section.

@@likkleginger agree and I think using diffuser isn’t really healthy either... My hair was not straight but a wavy- electric, I discovered my childhood curls are still there after I learnt my type wasn’t supposed to be brushed dry, but I don’t use products because my hair is fine and don’t like it, neither use a diffuser because heat is still heat and it’s still gonna create damages if used too much even on low heat. I think this is not constructive to lie to people on their pattern, the cgm is only gonna improve curls which are already there but not create waves or curls. Also products doesn’t works for everybody even among wavies/ curlier. I see some people putting too much products and the hair looks greasy...

I don't wanna disappoint you, but I think that your hair is straight with texture, almost wavy, like a 1c type. Straight hair can have texture :) Also, wavy hair looses texture easily depending on the curvature, mine is a 2b/2c, if I mess with it too much my wave/curls mess a little and get more undefined. Maybe your hair would feel better with gel like products, as well, instead of more creamy products. Your hair is beautiful, and so are you!

The reason it got straighter and and straighter throughout the month is product buildup! You should try the low sulfate, "lowpoo" shampoo by deva curl, or use a sulfate shampoo every 3 washes or so... even silicone free products can create buildup, and that is definitely what's happening if your hair got less textured as the month went on after clarifying!

Thank you for trying! As someone who’s been on CG for over a year, yeah, it should get better within a month. But just something to throw out maybe for if you have other subscribers with wavy hair - as far as your wet waves going away - sometimes people with fine and low porosity hair (which from the way you describe your hair it sounds like you have) need to clarify with a sulfate shampoo every two weeks to a month. While it’s not strictly “Curly Girl Method,” a lot of wavy girls need to do it because we get product build up which kills our definition. I personally use a sulfate shampoo whenever I feel that my waves won’t “clump” and it helps a lot. Your straight hair does look a lot healthier! Sometimes I wish I had straight hair because it’s a lot easier to style. I have to do the curly girl steps or I get frizzy half defined waves!

I think the products are too heavy for your hair type. It’s a definitely a trial and error kind of process to find what works for curly hair. I would dilute the styling product you use with water, dry with a cotton T-shirt and don’t mess with your hair too much. When you diffuse keep it in one place and flip your hair over. I apply the product to soaking wet hair and when I scrunch to dry the excess product is soaked up into the T-shirt.

I’ve watched all your CGM videos and I’ve noticed that your hair always looks stringy when it is under the influence of the curly girl friendly products. Not all hair is curly, and its ok if yours isn’t. I love the dedication you’ve given to the CGM though. You’ve really seen it through. You mention that you had waves a few years ago. Was your hair shorter then? If so, it could be that the length of your hair had weighed down those waves so they are not as big. This is true for me. My longest hair was so straight but my hair texture is pretty dang curly. Between a 2 and a 3 on the texture scale! Additionally, if your hair is very fine in texture, the extra products will really weigh it down. Anyways I really love that you put in the hard work. Im sorry that you didn’t get to see the results as much as I (and probably you) wished you would have. Id love to hear a video of a “straight hair method” no heat where you really take care of your hair. Straight hair has its own challenges and problems and I think your platform would appreciate it.

I feel the CG method did work in that it gave you the results most curly people are looking for...separation of curl and piecy-ness. The difference is that looks good with natural curls, but tend to make straight hair stringy. Also, remember that real curls in no way behave the same as heat curls, so you can't really control them.

I also have straight/wavy/poofy hair and I’ve been trying the curly girl method for about 3 months now. I can say right away that the methods you see on KZbin for girls with “proper” curly hair won’t work for straight/wavy hair. The biggest win I found was that after scrunching in the hair products (at the stage when your hair is wet and wavy) rather than using the diffuser to scrunch your hair to your head, use the diffuser to kind of “hover” over your waves. This way the heat will help the products form a cast over your waves and will prevent the frizzy Hermione look because you’re not disturbing the waves at all. I also use the Deva Wavemaker. My results are minimally wavy hair with little to no frizz!

Personally, I didn't notice any difference in my hair (in fact it looked so much worse) until I passed the 3 month mark being CG. Also, as many people have mentioned before styling products to make a huge difference. I am a 2a/2b, I have some waves that can be straight when I apply no product at all, specially at the back of my hair. I recommend the kinky curly curling custard, the giovanni eco chic la hold gel and the jessicurl spiralicious gel.(Those last two I use them together). Those products, along with deep conditioning every week, have made a huge difference in my hair, the KKKC is miraculous. Something to note too, is that I have to apply a lot of product for my waves to actually be more enhanced, if I apply too little I get no hold, and my hair definitely looks like yours.

Try using a gel or moose, curling cream tends to be more thick and moisturizing since it is usually meant for 3-4 type hair. Since your hair is 1b/1c MAYBE 2a a gel might be lighter on your hair, while the curling cream will weigh it down.

I used to think my hair was straight because my mum's has always been curlier, but my hair never looks like this unless I brush it out when it's wet. I agree with others that the products you are using may be too heavy for your hair. I recently started the curly girl method myself. I have wavy hair, bordering on curly that is low porosity. Sometimes wavy-haired people with fine or low porosity hair need to use sulfates periodically (I do every week-ish) otherwise our curls get weighed down with build-up (even when using products without silicones). I experienced the same thing where my waves were getting straighter and straighter, did a clarifying rinse and they bounced back! Anyways, if you ever try this again, I’d test your hair porosity (you can google for instructions) and try a modified method for “wavies” (can google for “mistakes wavies make with curly girl method”). All in all the curly girl method does work well for many people, but for others it’s pretty finicky and takes a lot of experimentation to find the right products and methods. It was fun to watch these!

A couple of things! First, I totally, totally understand if you don't want to try yet another go at the CG method. However, I have a few suggestions, should you undertake it again! First, I agree with the poster who commented that you are probably weighing down your hair inadvertently. I have very, very fine strands of curly hair, and using too much moisturizing or cream textured products actually lessens my curl. My hair stylist is a certified Deva Cut stylist, and she recommended that I use a lightweight spray gel instead. While I was reluctant, because I desperately wanted to avoid the "crunch," I was shocked to find that my curls are far more defined and bouncier with it. As well, I greatly reduced the amount of conditioner I use, which again seems counter-intuitive, but for my type of fine strands, less is better, or else it just gets weighed down. Second, when I plop my hair, I don't leave it for a few minutes-- I accordion it into my towel, plop it on top of my head, and leave it for at least an hour-- sometimes even overnight! Keeping it up til it's a lot drier defines the S and C curves of my curls. I then diffuse it in sections in a fashion similar to what you did, leaving the hair dryer on the curls for several minutes, though I use it on cool, to avoid excessive heat damage. Anyway, I love your videos, and I love your willingness to try new things!

If you're looking for any sort of hair info, i strongly recommend the Curl Ninja (her channel name is something like Debunking Curly Hair Myths with the Curl Ninja or something like that). She really opened my eyes about porosity and how that can really affect the way your hair looks, even if it's very softly wavy. I have wavy hair and on the CGM it kept getting straighter and straighter, which didn't make any sort of sense. Until I realized that because the CGM tells me to hydrate constantly, my hair was getting more and more weight down by conditioners (silicone-free and CG approved). Once I stopped using conditioner like my life depended on it, I got serious volume, a lot more definition, etc. And I did this for one wash...so I imagine it's gonna get better from there. I don't think you should retry the method necessarily. Just looking to give you some sort of explanation of why your 'waves' might have gotten looser as you went on. Love you! xoxo

maybe is the weather, for example when I am at the beach, my hair gets super curly, amazing curls, only by drying it at open air (my natural hair is wavy). but when am at the city turns really flat and not very pretty, because of the contamination, I think.

Wow, that is a lot of product! What if you use just something like dr. bronner's and nothing else at all and air-drying? Admittedly I have pretty curly hair, but my curls get better the less I do to my hair... Also, your hair can alter as you get older, as mine was always wavy but with each of my three daughter's arrival it got a lot curlier!

I found out I do have waves and my hair is so much nicer, through the curly girl method. But I saw it after the first time I scrunched my hair after washing and did not comb it and let it air dry.

LOL stranded on a desert island made me laugh out load!! That was good!! You obviously do not have really curly hair or very wavy hair but t least you have some texture which can add to volume. Great video and I was very curious to see if anyone could get some curl out of their hair. I never knew I had curly hair until I saw a video on youtube so I tried it and to my surprise I had curls. I actually had someone ask me the other day if my curls were natural and I said yea she said can I just say I hate you! LOL that made me feel really good!!!!

I would try only squishing you hair once when you dry it. My hair’s curly and if I squish it more than once it makes it stringy and sometimes I loose the curl. I think your hair is wavy at least a bit but when you squish it multiple times it might be diminishing that wave since its sucking the moisture from it and putting it in a different pattern, especially since you said more pronounced when it’s wet/moisturized. I would try this or even try just letting it drip dry to see if you get different results.

I think the curly girl method is meant to be done for three months in a row untill you start seeing Good results. However, you should still be seeing SOMETHING happen more than what was shown. This video reminds me of when I tried doing the no heat straightening method with bobby pins and a scarf. I kept getting dents in my hair. :( We always want what we can't have.

I don’t know if it is the same in other countries but in France there are many communities to learn how to care about hair on healthy and natural way. Those communities are for all hair type: for straight to curly and just help people embracing the best their own patterns. Some people there including myself started it in hope to grow our hair very longs (I wished very long hair to look like an elf lol), turned out mine can’t be too long each because my thyroid issues or because my genetics, but at least I learnt many things and found out this is better than the cgm. I personally have 2c/3a hair but i am not following cgm because my hair is fine and doesn’t like products, also because diffuser (if used too often) is still heat so still gonna create some damage even on low heat. I guess cgm works better for tighter curls pattern and denser hair type...

Omg movie 1 Hermione 😂😂 I think it could be a number of factors. Either your hair doesn't have much wave to it naturally, or you weren't using the best products for your hair type and combined with your hair length it's just not waving up very much. But I think your hair looks lovely straight!

If you used leave in products you have to wash them out more often especially with waves. They drag down the hair. People with light curls or waves should use less leave in products or less heavy ones :).

Sleeping on it wet is a definite no lol. It's just going to come out stringy and frizzy. I also sleep with mine up in a pineapple bun when it's dry or my waves totally fall out. The way you're scrunching is making a lot of frizz too. I would suggest scrunching upside down without the towel and scrunching in a mouse or something lighter than a cream, then after your clumps are formed, you can scrunch very gently with the towel. It looks like you might be squeezing it too hard- I just lift mine with the towel/tshirt and press it against my head, otherwise I get breakage and frizz. I would also suggest watching a few videos on how to diffuse, it took me a few tries to get it right. After it's dry, it can look kinda crazy, so I let it settle a bit before I decide it's a fail, and I also scrunch out the product with a little oil on my hands to make it smooth and shiny. Waves need a little bit different technique than curls. I think even straight hair is healthier without sulfates and silicones, you just have to find what works for your hair. If you do try to stick with any parts of the method I would definitely recommend lighter weight products, your hair looked really weighed down.

I think you may have gotten better results if you had used an actual gel instead of a creme to get the gel cast, but it's fairly obvious that your hair prefers being straight.... So reward vs effort, I think for you straight is better. Love that you tried this. Love your vids.

It sounds to me like you have a slight wave, but you need styling products (at least a little hold, not just moisture, from gel or mousse), and maybe some protein. Youve mentioned you have fine hair, and as do I. When I don’t use protein for more than 3-4 weeks, my wave almost entirely falls out and gets straight when it dries without styling product. Protein improves the structure of you hair, so when your hair lacks it as it does when it’s fine, it can loose it’s structure as it dries.

I started watching your historical beauty videos a couple years ago and I found them amazing and fascinating! Keep up the good work, you are doing great! Most girls who quit CGM do so during the transition method (what you were in). CGM is 50% figuring out what YOUR hair needs. Your straighter hair will get greasier faster, and need lighter products than someone with 3b hair. Also the title says you tried it for a month, but you only had four wash days?? That means grease and buildup. Also it seems you are used to not using styling products like gel or mousse because you don't need them with straight hair. You need to try using them if you want to have any hope of keeping those waves. I would recommend mousse because it's lighter than gel. Looks like you have a "CG revisited" video, so I'm going to check that out...

This looks familiar. I have what I can only describe as “Robert Plant hair on the bottom + Neil Young hair on top”.... in other words, I’ll get full ringlets on the bottom, but if I do much as LOOK at the top layer of my hair (or heaven forbid I touch it or a gentle breeze hits it), the top layer will go full wavy/straw/stringy/“I’ve been living in a dumpster for a month”.... it is very very difficult to look presentable with my natural hair for this reason. It very much looks like I just woke up except for occasionally there’ll be one ten minute period once every couple months when my curls don’t look insane. It is glorious.

You should assess your porosity to see if you are high or low porosity hair and also your moisture and protein balance in your hair. If I had to guess, your hair might be lacking protein and that's why it's not curling. You could benefit from Olaplex 3 which repairs damaged hair and acts like a protein or a protein filler or mask. I myself was afraid of those because my hair is fairly healthy so I just did a rice water rinse and even that made my waves and curls perk up a lot just from doing it once. And I also think you would've benefited from a curling cream, mousse or gel. Casts hold your curl and then you scrunch out the crunch to make your hair soft again. I learned a lot from watching videos by Janelle O'Shaughnessy and real life curly girl, they talk about protein vs moisture and porosity and how to figure out what your hair needs

The CGM doesn't only consist on styling your hair according to your hair type (yours is probably 1b . wich is straight, and trying to style it as if it was curly wont work). Its also a series of mask treatments according to your hair porosity. I´m 2b-2c (wavy hair) high porosity and I use the CGM but according to my type of hair. I don´t try to force it into something that is not (curly hair). I´m not saying that you should try it again but I'm trying to explain why it "didn't work"

Hair is so strange. I always had straight hair as a child. Then very short hair for about 20 years. I had a lot of hair fall out in 2007 and when it grew back and I grew it out it was curly !!! I then went shoulder length again in 2014 and when I grew it long again it was straight !! I have again lost hair (I believe my fibromyalgia is the cause) but it's still straight.

You have to remember that you've got heat damage in your hair. So it won't be as wavy as you would be without it. It takes months to years to grow out. You'll notice it at the root after a while too.

your hair is similar to mine. I had crazy waves as a teen like you, I had big hair losses through years and I`ve lost the crazy waves too. My hair is more " straight " in the front pieces and more a 2b in some parts of the back. Somedays these 2b waves are really crazy and make my hair looks like I have 2 diferent hair types in my head, this is the thing that stresses me out!! But I never use heat on these crazy waves I suck it up wait untill the next wash and hope for the best. With this method I tried to curl the front pieces to make it similar to the 2b part but I got the same results as you! But with this method I discovered that leave in and less washes smooths my 2b waves getting more like the front pieces sooooo at least I win in something

Your hair probably needs protein. Fine hair generally needs more protein to have a shape. When it gets over moisturizered, it loses its curl or wave. Look up the rice rinse method. It would be very easy and simple to try!

@@catjillo my hair is naturally straight and I've been perming it every year for over 20 years because that's how much I LOOOVEEE curly hair, so I know what it's like to take care of both straight and curly hair. My straight hair was a lot of work because it always got greasy right away which made my hair look stringy and like it was dripping with grease even just one day after washing it, and I had to work so hard to try and make it not stick to my skull all the time I looked like i had no hair at all because it was just plastered to my head it was so straight and flat and greasy. After I got a perm all of that went away. You can't imagine how delighted I was! I did NOTHING and I had SO MUCH VOLUME! My hair also didn't get greasy anymore and unlike when I had straight hair, I now go for one week without washing it. So talk about easy to take care of hair! I'll choose washing my hair once a week over washing it every other day any day. My hair routine is so much easier now, I shampoo condition and put on JUST ONE PRODUCT, it can be a leave-in or curl cream or gel, it doesn't matter. I have low porosity hair so I can only use one product or my hair looks dirty because it doesn't absorb products. I plop my hair a bit then forget about it and air dry and my hair looks INCREDIBLE every time, with so little effort.

Unfortunately I feel you still didn't do it right... some sulfate free shampoos are still quite drying. They should be reserved for monthly clarifying. Cowashing is the primary way of cleansing for the curly girl method. The goal is to eliminate shampooing totally. Also the method for diffusing is to do it upside down and hold the dryer still, not to shimmy it around like you did. Also you are using a cream gel, these are normally reserved for very dry hair, which you do not have. I recommend you to cowash only, use a very light leave in, and a classic hair gel (curly girl approved of course), plop for no more than ten minutes and diffuse upside down on low heat til dry, then scrunch out the gel cast. You definitely have waves, like 2a-2b.

I gotta say, if you're not using a strong silicone-free gel, letting it cast, and then breaking it up, I don't think you can consider yourself as having really given it a proper shot! THAT is what will make your waves come out, the rest of it is just to keep it healthy.

I would say you're using the wrong products as there seemed to be no hold at any point and also you were diffusing in a manner which is only minimally effective. A lot of people do it upside down (I personally find that directs all of my hair forward at the root and eliminates any chance of volume so I start upright) but a tip I found was to hover at the root first to dry there before moving to the shafts and ends, as the root dries slowest. Also take smaller sections to dry and simply scoop them once and hold still until they're 80-90% dry. Whenever I break this rule I end up with more frizz and less definition.
