hi jo the battety is a common 18650 the little board is for battery managment and will cut the output if battery drops below 2.8 volts you can use your psu to put a bit of voltage in it set for say 3 volt at 500ma.
@paulroberts3454
@paulroberts3454 Жыл бұрын
The reason you don't get a voltage on the wires is because the bms is in protective mode. Cuts all voltage out to the wires. You need to hook that 18650 battery upto any other 3.6v battery so it equalises the current dead battery. Go straight to the battery terminals themselves NOT the discharge wires. It will then start charging correctly after about 2 minutes of doing this
@birzanlucian2051
@birzanlucian2051 Жыл бұрын
You are 100% right about the BMS, but I wouldn't recommend hooking up the "dead" battery directly to a charged battery. Discharged batteries (any liion cell bellow 3.7v) need to be charged slowly. The lower the charge, the slower the amperage. By hooking up a healthy battery to a dead one, the ingress current is very high and might cause the dead battery to overheat and vent. I use the IMAX b6 to connect directly to the dead battery and managed to save some batteries below 1v by charging at 3.7V and 0.1A. The lower the initial voltage of the battery, the less usefull capacity will be left, but for some exotic flat batteries it's sometimes worth the trouble.

Not really recommended to connect it directly to another battery because the current will be too high and it's risky. Best to use a current limited power supply or a charger to slowly bring it up to working voltage.

You have nothing to lose, so you should crack the robot battery pack apart. See what cells were used, and maybe fabricate some kind-of new battery.

Right, they're certainly 3.7v lithiums, and probably just need individually charged (see other posts) to kick them back to life

It's just a regular 18650 battery with a BMS board that cuts off the voltage to either negative or positive lead if the voltage goes too low, if you charged the battery directly it probably would have started to work again (on the bluetooth speaker)

isn't that just a normal 18650 battery like a vape one? the small board is probably a protection circuit (really cheap)
@sorcererstan

You should try to resurrect the battery. Connect a power supply with a 4.2V, 100mA limit directly to the battery (bypass the charging protection). it should charge up fine. I think the circuit simply prevents output (and charging?) once it falls below about 3.2 volts.

Something I do when I encounter a very low battery is simply charge it up to at least 3.6 volts for cell phone batteries (most being at max 4.20 volts) using my variable power supply. I've noticed quite often that once a lithium ion battery gets low enough, it can no longer be charged by the charge control board. The board was likely fine. The speaker probably had just been sitting for a very long time without receiving a charge.

14:30 Maybe the Battery could be replaced with a 3S Lipo, if it is not already won inside. The nominal Voltage for a 3S is 11.1V, so it might work. The thing with multi-cell-lipos is that you really want to balance the cells during charging for the battery to work longer. Older (and cheaper) chargers neglect that and just slap it with voltage for a bit. This works for a while...

It's an 18650 Li-ion cell they are in everything from hoverboards, power tools, vapes, laptops. Look up tabbed/tagged 18650 cells you'll find one dirt cheap with the nickel solder tags pre spotwelded on. Easy solder job to sort that. The little circuit board is a BMS battery management for over/under voltage protection.

It's not showing you any voltage because the battery management system is in low voltage cutoff mode. manually charge the battery (bypassing the BMS board). You can charge to 4.2V using a constant current of 500ma. A bench power supply would be clutch here.

My recommandation with the first Item is to charge the battery individualy to 3,6V and the BMS will get active. The robot Battery is also broken. If its an Li-Ion Battery there is an 3S confic, so maybe ther is one cell broken which is tying down all the other two cells. That should be visible via heat cam. Nice Video though!!

Oj! The battery circuit from the speaker - 2 possibilities I would bet on: 1. voltage is too low to enable the circutry (eg. energise the gate or sth) - that would be easily solved by charging this battery low current via your bench power supply. 2. one of these little mosfets is gone - measuring differences betwen them should give you an answer. Cheers!

The speaker is probably an easy fix if ur still interested. I have seen this before a couple of times. The board has a short but it cuts power off way to fast to detect it by heat or show up on the ampmeter. Understand that the blinking is the board turning on and off probably due to the charging circuit cutting power. Try injecting voltage directly to the board using the battery lines. Sucker will probably heat up enough to see it then. People already wrote about battery low voltage protection. I always test by charging the batteries directly and keeping an eye on their behavior. Added note it wouldn’t surprise me if the short is on the main rail.

Joey that one board that did not let the power through is the one thing that will be protecting the battery. It's perfectly fine since a liion battery has a absolute minimum of 2.8V afterwards it switches the power off. For more information I will be here for you to explain it more detailed to you

On the bluetooth speaker, pull off the charge board and then charge it up if you don't have a charger you could prob wander into a vape shop like Totally Wicked if its still there in the main shopping area and either ask them to slap it in a charger for you to get it up to workable volties or just buy a new flat top 18650 from 'em and easy from that point. The board looks like an undervolt protection board but the silly type that consumes a tiny amount to maintain itself thus it ends up committing hari kari.

Those 18650 cells are super common. Lots of old laptop batteries use 18650 cells. The little "circuit" on the cell is a bog standard individual cell BMS. They're super cheap, maybe a dollar or two for one. Really easy to replace. As Paul Roberts commented in these comments, you can charge the battery directly via another battery, or, if you have a bench power supply, 3.7v around 200mA to charge and you'll get some power showing up on the BMS afterward (assuming the BMS isn't failed).
@lemagreengreen
@lemagreengreen Жыл бұрын
Always worth collecting 18650 cells, particularly ones with tabs. Can be had for a few £ a piece at that capacity if you shop around, not that it was actually needed in this case but handy to have around since they are so common and the tabbed ones come with those long tabs pre-welded. What has likely happened there is the BMS has detected a very low cell voltage (~2.5v) and is cutting the power, you could probably charge the cell (gently) and bring it up to a few volts and the BMS would then be happy. Then again for the cell to have dipped that low suggests it might not be healthy and bringing it back to life by charging it might not be a long term fix. As for the robot... cracking open that battery case would probably reveal 3 18650 cells that you can replace, a small spot welder might assist you with these types of repairs since new cells often need tabs attached.
@marcyd2007
@marcyd2007 Жыл бұрын
There's an LED charging indicator on the wall plug end for the Robot. Seriously though Joey, the battery pack is probably just three 18650 cells, you can swap these things around very easily. As mentioned in the comments below already, if these gadgets are left sitting around for too long the battery charge falls below the operating voltage of the BMS. So the battery was telling you it's got a little bit of charge, the BMS was telling you 'nothing to see here' because it's there to protect the battery when it's too low. You just need to jump to start the battery again for a few seconds with the correct voltage directly to the battery connections on the BMS and then plug your charger in and you'll be good to go. People don't realise that Li-Ion cells have a 'storage' voltage to maintain the battery while in storage, but of course what happens is the gadget gets used until the battery runs low (or to be exact the BMS cuts the power to protect the battery) then it gets chucked in a cupboard for 6 months and what a surprise, the battery appears to be dead the next time they switch it on. If they'd just recharged it before they put it away, it would probably still be working for them.

Little board on the cell is BMC and it cuts the output if the voltage of the cell drop below a certain value. You need to directly charge the cell for BMC to go live again and give you the output. i think if you open the battery of the robot you will find a similar BMC preventing you from charging the over drained battery.
