Bad coil > coil gets hot > no spark
@jeep20037 жыл бұрын
If the plugs are wet when it dies then the problem is spark. Or just try with starting fluid. Very common for coils to heat up and die. Or the condensor if your engine has one

Verry good point, coils can do strange things. Weed wackers come to mind, they have cheaps coils. One moment they work fine, the next....

I believe its the valve lash.. Once she warms up a bit, valves stay the slightest bit open and that happens... .002 makes a difference, y'know.

either this or bad coils. I've had coils that wouldn't work once they were warm but we're fine cold. have very similar symptoms.

This doesn't apply to all shim bucket motors, but the shim "spin test" works on most. In short, you take the valve cover off and turn the motor over until the cam lobe faces away from a shim/bucket you wish to check. Then, If you can't rotate/turn that shim you have clearance issues. This doesn't replace measuring the clearance with a feeler gauge, but any that can't spin will no doubt need to be corrected and will justify a full inspection of all clearances. I recall you rebuilt this motor. Did you happen to keep all the valve shims in their original locations?

try spraying some fuel into the intake when it dies, if it starts then you know its not getting fuel and the floats are stuck or something is clogged. If it doesn't start then it might be getting too much fuel or some kind of ignition issue spark/coil
@brianw4brian7 жыл бұрын
Experimental Fun I agree boggs down starved for fuel... Try fuel delivery. Carburators are funny sometimes. Tap the carb. See if fuel needles sticking...
@Darwinpasta7 жыл бұрын
My first thought is vapor lock. If the fuel line or the carb is getting too much heat into it (usually too close to the exhaust), the fuel vaporizes and the carb can't work with that. Heat shields might help. But yeah, check for spark when warm, and valve lash might not be a bad idea to check either.
@Dastardly847 жыл бұрын
As other people said, spray starting fluid into the intake when it dies and see if it fires. Check for spark when it dies (Could be a bad coil). If it has spark, then check the valve clearance. It can only be so many things. I've been stumped on a few things my self, but usually figure it out with time.

@stoobydoo47907 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure , but it sounds like your problem started when the engine gets to operating temp. Maybe vapor-lock , does the fuel line run by any heat source ? Or possibly is your motor getting the air flow it needs to cool it. I know these may seem simple, but they are often overlooked. We know it heats up it stops, cools down & then starts and runs till it heats up again . Don't get discouraged, keep knocking away at it. When you find it you'll 🤔 " How did I miss it ? " GOOD LUCK !! 😉 Really enjoy all of your videos

One general suggestion ... leave the accelerator ALONE when trying to restart an engine!!! Flooding an engine wont help! As far as the problem ... sorry. The only thing I can think of is some sort of temperature sensor on the engine that "may" be cutting fuel off due to false reading, or sensor not connected ... etc... Something like that. But PLEASE ... leave the gas alone when starting! ;-) Love watching your vids ... in fact I'll soon be making my own Mini Green Mud-Spraying Machine!! :-D It might not be green though! lol

I used to be a Suzuki mechanic . They had a problem in that era with bad ignition signal generators that would heat up, stop working and be fine after a short cool down period. Next time it dies, check for spark and, if you have an ohm meter check for continuity through the generator. I'm sure a little google time will show you better than I can tell you. Also, pumping the throttle like that is useless, as CV (constant velocity) carbs have no accelerator pump and the throttle control is not connected directly to the throttle plates. (More Google time.) Good luck, hope this helps.
@southronjr15707 жыл бұрын
After it dies, see if starting fluid will get it to run for a few seconds, if it does that means it's a fuel system problem, if it doesn't it means you have either a mechanical or electrical problem. After it dies again, pull the spark plugs and ground it out on the head with the wire attached, if you see a spark across the gap then it's mechanical, if no spark, it's electrical. Hope that helps you get started down the right path to get it running.
@GaryLordsWayMinistry6 жыл бұрын
Fuel filter is upside down maybe too, I do not know if that would create a problem but it might. Hook up a fuel pump and regulator, that way you know you have enough fuel for the power rating for the service it will be doing. Might have to run a return line as well with the fuel pump though. Run racing fuel as well might help.
@Hollaendaren7 жыл бұрын
This may sound boneheaded but is your fuel tank breather plugged? If it is (or if you don't have one) the tank will pull a vacuum when fuel is drawn out and finally it won't give enough fuel to run the engine. After letting it sit for a bit the pressure will equalize and it'll run again. Next time it happens, check if you have fuel in the filter. And try opening the fuel cap then try starting again. Not saying this is definitely it but it could be. It happened to me and took me a while to figure out :)

Engine is running to rich. Doubble check valve lash, jetting size (so both are similair). If you bought that fuel filter new and it's that clogged, you know you have a debris problem in the tank also. Keep in mind the fuel tank is heating up after a while and might need serious ventilation. Put a heat probe on the engine and a wideband o2 sensor in the exhaust while you investigate further. Some fuel tanks might need an internal baffle around the pickup line. I would however recommend a plastic tank. If you roll hard and the metal tank is ripped up that could create a spark. And bang.
@Hippie459MN7 жыл бұрын
Check your coil(s). I had a dirt bike that would do that. Start up, run great then the coil would get hot and stop working. Let it cool down for about 5-10 minutes then then it would start right back up and run great for 5 minutes or so until the coil go hot again. As soon as it does that, pull a plug and check for spark right away. If no spark, let it cool down fully then check for spark again.

Do the gs500 carburetors rely on a vacuum force to get the fuel in to it? maybe its stopping fuel getting to the carb fast enough, so the bike cuts out and then starts again once its been waiting a few minutes.

My advice, check the valve lash, as suggested. Also check the pilot screw adjustment and choke. Just my limited experience.
@ricksherrod14187 жыл бұрын
Check for spark when it won't start. Should be able to jump a 1/4" gap if coils are strong. If spark is fine, try adding propane to one carb when it won't start. If you're lean it will start with a little added propane. Also, next time when it shuts off pull the air cleaner really quick and look in carb for a white block of ice condensation. In temps below 65 fahrenheit, a growing block of ice in carb venturi will change your mixture and will shut off. Remember that those carbs have no heat whatsoever to keep them from freezing. Air cooled engines usually have a warm air pickup at air cleaner inlet to pick up warm air from around exhaust tubing for cooler weather.
@jpwipeout997 жыл бұрын
I think you might have a crack in the intake manifold. Because when he first starts off the crack is very small but when it warms up it expands into much air is leading in the mix is off. When it cools down the crack become so small but after doing that a couple times the engine still too warm in the crack is too large. Or maybe a crack somewhere is but I think I would look into that.
@mihkus7 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah... I might be wrong but perhaps your problem may be air hose going from crankcase to carb... Not enough pressure. How are your seals? Might need to check those

@DonziGT2307 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it's not a fuel starving problem, and that filter should have more flow than you need as long as it's not full of junk. I'm guessing it's loosing spark due to heat or the valves might be too tight. Ride it 'till it dies, uphill so you can coast home. As soon as it dies pull the plugs and check spark and compression. Compare the spark quality and compression to what it does just lightly warmed up when it's still running well and you'll likely find the cause of it dying. If the coil or stator is going bad or has a bad connection the spark will get weaker as it warms up. If the valves are too tight they might not fully seat when warmed up and expanded bleeding off compression. Couple other things to note. When it died at the top of the hill instead of muscling it you coulda put it in gear and used the starter. When you were coasting down the hill and approaching the uphill it was dumb to yank the wheel around, you scrubbed off a lot of speed that might have gotten you over that little hill. And before getting out to push you coulda tried to start it again since it had had more time to rest. Not belittling you, just giving you some pointers in case you keep having this battle.

In my opion seems like it is getting to much fuel, because whenever you was riding and had your foot on the throttle it was fine then as soon as you came to a stop it quiet and normally whenever it won't start for a few mins means it flooded out so you have to wait on some fuel to evaporate I would check spark plug and see if it has a lot of fuel on it and go from there, I read a lot of the other comments they all make very good points. Hope you figure it out

Is it possible that the carburator gets to hot? If it does, the gas starts boiling and the air bubbles will "clog up" the Jets. Its a common problem on older, air cooled Bikes when they are driven on a hot day in stop and go traffic. BTW, did you check if you still have spark when the engine dies? Sometimes the ignition coil gets bad and wont work anymore once it gets hot.

Hmm. Another thing that may be going wrong, only to the driving part of the video. You're treating it like a car engine pumping the throttle. It doesn't work so well with motorcycles in my experience, it's too easy to flood the engine that way on motorcycles. Awesome buggy though, and absolutely something I'll be considering in the future myself!

Check your carbs again to make sure there's no trash in them. Once you've done that, you've eliminated fuel as your problem.

Are you sure that it is fuel and that it isnt over heating? Those engines are air cooled but they are designed to be at the front of a motorcycle where the air is coming right at it. The seat being in front of it could be blocking the air flow past the engine and causing it to over heat.
