I think the main point with PT is melancholy and use of emotion. The songs are not really that technical (Wilson isn't a technical player) but they can be very complex and driven by atmosphere (e.g. Anesthetize).
@nathanpickering67424 жыл бұрын
There are a some songs that are a bit technical but it's not overdone and it serves a purpose.

@@nathanpickering6742 for sure. The rhythm section is a lot more technical though. Gavin Harrison is probably one of the best drummers on the planet lol

Okay so I'll first start off my comment by saying coconut. Second, just to touch on your closing comments, the beauty of bands like PT, Steven Wilson (solo), Dream Theater, Riverside and the other names you brought up, is that their catalog is so big and so versatile, that there's music in there for everyone to like if you find the right tracks. Here's my music suggestion. Schadenfreude from six side die. Very unknown and underrated song. I don't even know what genre it falls into. It has prog elements, but I wouldn't call it prog. And the band itself doesn't have any other song in that style. Most of there music is heavy but not much growling. Check it out!
@fabiodias55274 жыл бұрын
I'm 35 and grew up listening to this. I bought In Absentia in 2002 right after it was released. If you like prog and don't appreciate the beauty of what Steven Wilson does, you don't know your prog :) My brother got to see Porcupine for the The Incident Tour but I only got to see Steven a couple of times in Toronto for his solo tours. When Oasis and Third Eye Blind were mentioned you could see the disappointment in your friends face hahahah

Coconut Milk is pretty gud 🤐 They're from Canada, the bring the changes and they have some epic solos, one of the best drummers (R.I.P. NP), so can't go wrong with Rush ;) Rush - Villa Strangiato or yyz (both instrumental) Prog recommendations hell yes I'm game. Depends if you are game for any form of Prog or you prefer the weird timesignature constant rythm changing Prog? Be wary, alot of 70's Prog is called prog because they blended alot of styled that was not done before like Genesis did that alot. I find that interesting and can appreciate it even if it's less special nowadays (don't know about Metalbirb?) ....Either way, influencal 70's Bands: as others mentioned King Crimson (I let others recomend I'm still exploring myself), Yes, Rush, Genesis, Camel, Vandergraf Generator... .. . For 80's Prog: Pain of Salvation, Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, Voivod.... 90's: Symhpony X, I left out Ayreon and Jethro Thull because I don't think Metalbirb would enjoy them... I might be wrong...

Blackest Eyes dropped in 2002
@insertgenericusernamehere24022 жыл бұрын
Too me. Blackest eyes is almost a mood piece and the music matches the lyricism perfectly and for that it will be timeless. The calm riffs, the eeire sinister whispering of "your makeup runs" pre heavy riff you feel like the killer (as that's what the content is about) is cold and calculated and its only when those heavy riffs come in he shows some sense of urgency or anger. Everything else is... Unnervingly calm

They were proggier before this album... more playful and experimental. This record became successfull especially because it was much straighter, poppier, with more rock structures. But I agree with most things. Back then I loved that song for whatever reason, but nowadays I can`t really stick to that band for too long because there's something missing. But anyway, this band is highly overrated, and so is the mastermind, Steve Wilson. His solo stuff was too much of showing off, to much musical masturbatory mayhem.
