Trying To Kill The World's Most Expensive Cut-off Wheel...

I'm torn on this thing.
A lifetime warranty on a cut off wheel is pretty wild. What this cutoff wheel is capable of is also pretty wild. But somehow, I don't know when I would use it for normal metal fabrication.
In today's video, we test the $199.00 Bad Dog tool cutoff wheel.
I was surprised to say the least, but I wouldn't buy this again. Either way we had fun testing this strange tool!

That makes sense. And for hardened materials like leaf springs, this seems to cut as fast as a standard abrasive. Might make it a bit easier to pull axles or something 👍

@@PabloEscobar-st8qoi started a big grass fire with my cut off wheel. Luckily got it under control but still scary how quick it went up. Now I am very careful as to where my sparks go when grinding, even in the shop

@@DirtLifestyle Agreed, but John Doe can't use a cutting wheel in a junkyard due to sparks/fire hazards/junkyard rules. That leaves companies that have their employees do jobs where this tool would be a cost saver vs the company going through tons of classic cutting wheels. That said though, that market is very small and once Bad Dog has sold to Dickie's Wrecking yard, Dickie is off the customer list because Dickie has a lifetime product with a lifetime warranty. My bet is they'll be sending out more warranty discs than the number of sales per month/year.

Definitely seems nice for a metal based cut off wheel, but I definitely prefer abrasive wheels in the shop. The steel wheels have the advantage of not making a huge amount of dust for those of us in single car garages when it's freezing outside. Also offroading because you don't have to worry about them exploding when you're 2 hours from a hospital.
@Evildaddy911
@Evildaddy911 8 ай бұрын
I think that's really the best use case, when you need to not to break an abrasive. I've done some work where we're cutting welds that we know have stresses on them. Sometimes the gap would open, sometimes the material would pinch and break that disc you just put on. I feel like these would have saved a lot of time changing and have been significantly safer

So based on the lady that you questioned about the warranty. When she said that they have replaced the discs once a month for customers. This tells me that the desk doesn’t actually last a lifetime. That the majority of the money that you’re spending. Is for the lifetime warranty. So the product itself isn’t really worth the money. You just have to tell yourself. I actually use the product enough to condone needing it to be replaced frequently enough to pay for that extra warranty. It’s kind of like buying a prime membership on Amazon., and most cases, you can find that product quite a bit cheaper. If you’re willing to wait for it to be delivered. Rather than using the Prime two day shipping benefit.

Great video. I bought the grinder wheel with hub as you had in your video and the drill bit set one year ago. I feel the exact same way on “Was it worth the price” I do demo work on cars and motorcycles and I put the blade in my oldest and cheapest grinder for areas that I know will destroy a normal disk. And it works ok and gets the job done. Sloppy but it’s not for finishing work. The drill bit did not last one job and I have destroyed 4 bits so far. I’m a sucker to try new products to help my projects. But I spent sooo much money on these 2 items and I feel they over sold their product. And now have a bad taste about ever buying anything from them again. I buy many items at trade shows and they all seem to work as they tell you it will. But I hope you do the drill bits because I completely destroyed them in seconds on 3/4 inch steel plate. I ended up using a similar drill bit from their competitor and it drilled the holes with zero issue. I have not sent the drill bits back for warranty because I feel I was cheated fromthem promising a wonderful product and they was worst drill bits ever. I thought I was doing something wrong so I tried a different set and they worked as a drill bit should. So I tried the 1/2 bit into the 3/4 steel again and major failure. But no issues with another brand of drill bits to make the 1/2 hole. Same drill same speed but complete waste of time and money in my experience with it.

I've had one of these for several years. I don't use it for cutting, I use it for grinding. Really only on very hard metals. Of particular use is sharpening the carbide tips on my stump grinder. A regular grinding wheel of course won't touch them, but these diamond blades do a decent job. If you cut with them long enough, the diamond coating wears off the edge and then it won't cut anymore. The diamond itself isn't of course wearing, but the matrix it's bonded in comes off. I have replaced mine in a couple of times and when I go back to the ashrae show the end of January, I'll replace it again. Same guy!

The only place I could see this thing really shining would be concrete masonry work that would be it I've been using fiber cutoff wheels for 50 years and they work just fine somewhere out a little faster than others but they work just fine I always buy the thin ones because they work better in my opinion than the thick ones do When it comes to hard grinding wheels I try to find ones that are soft so they wear out faster that keeps the edges sharper they remove metal faster that way We have had the hard grinding wheels at work that were bought by the company because they were told they last 10 times longer than the other ones That's true they did once the edges were rounded over you couldn't use them for anything so they lasted a really long time sitting on a shelf or at the bottom of a trash can Where the softer wheels got used all the way up

Definitely have too see a video on the Drill Bits. I love this kind of Video. Basically it helps people like me on a limited budget save money. After watching I would never buy this product. But there are people that would be drawn in by the warranty of this product. Oh lifetime warranty look at how much money will be saved over time. People tend to forget you have to factor in your time. It’s not Free and if every job is taking twice to three times as long to do you have saved nothing in the end. Thanks for the video I thought it was very helpful. And I really would like to see a video on the Drill Bits.

After serving 8 years in the US Army I know there are so many times I wish I would've had that thing. For me though, I think learning how to use it through max experience and make it truly the last cutoff wheel I ever purchase.

I just ordered one off-line the other day. Haven’t tried it yet. I am a contractor, so I cut wood on a daily basis. I transfer the same skills to cutting metal. I use the marathon 6 1/2 inch metal cutting Skil saw blade. And cut it like lumber. That has sped up my Metal fabrication speed dramatically. And there’s just iron floating in the air versus carbon cut off wheels.

With a product like this i feel like they’re really banking on the guy that would normally buy a pack of regular cutoff discs once every 10 years or someone that’s renovating their house and thinking “I can use this to cut anything” and uses it for a few months then never again If their target market was actually people that use them every day there’s no way they could have a warranty like that.

I don't do a lot of precision metal cutting with the grinder, but I do a fair amount of auto demo in my home garage. I will be doing a lot more in the future as well. The ONLY reason why I would consider buying this is because it very well might be the last blade I would ever buy. I can still have other blades for the clean work, but 90% of my cuts are ugly and I never have to worry about wiping out or grenading a blade ever again. I just destroyed a Spyder last week, and using a lennox now.

Late to the party but here goes... I would look at this as a "combo wheel" (grind and cut) Not great at either but would be good to have on a devoted grinder as I have multiples to decrease blade change times. This keeps work flow flying along at a good pace! A valuable aspect you didn't cover is that it would work great for flush cutting. The design looks like they intended to make the face completely flat so the nut doesn't prevent you from laying the wheel flat on a surface and flush cutting something off. The time saved by having to cut at an angle with a conventional wheel then grabbing the grinding wheel to flatten out might be faster done all in one action with this wheel. This seems like it would be a great value at times - $200 worth??? don't know about that!

Could you make straight cuts with a jig or a angle grinder mount? If you can't make good cuts its kind of worthless. industrial diamonds are not really all that expensive so its not hard to cover it in diamonds this might be a good all purpose carry for on the trail use so you dont need to worry about having enough discs.

As a owner of a construction company, I could see this being useful for old cast iron bathtub demo, and concrete stuff. Other than those couple things I’m not 100% sure what else I would use it for. After typing that up, I got curious to see how many of those style of cutoff blades I had bought this year. I have bought 4 (that I could find) this year alone, and those Lenox ones are 25-30 a piece, over a couple years I could see this being worth it. Maybe I’ll have to get one.

For the sake of tradesmen like you, i hope this company is not going to do like some others with "Sorry, we no longer make this, so can't warranty it. Instead you should buy this new thing we make. It's just like the old one, but now it's red!"

I think I was slightly interested in it until she said you pay shipping and handling. The cost to ship it back and get it to you will be probably equally to 3-4 regular cut off discs. And you could pick those up at a local store in 15 minutes not 3-5 days. The amount of years you'd have to use this as your primary disc to offset the cost just doesn't make it really financially beneficial. I'm sure someone has some use cases that this will really be a great product but it doesn't seem like a great opportunity for the average Joe at home or in a part time shop scenario.

Yea this seems like a expense for someone who really values having a zero downtime option on hand vs anyone who can just pop over to the hardware store in 10min. I still think $200 is a big ask for that but as someone who lives a bit further out that most I know the pain of blowing my last fiber disk and debating the trip to the store as for me it's at least an hour lost round trip plus fuel. Much further out or in a higher stakes production environment something like this on hand might start to pay for itself quickly. I think These guys more or less nailed it, 4 hours round trip from civilization inawoods you'll value "it works" over "it's cheap and fast" though i think some of the cheaper metal disks might meet the need fine. Consider handing low buck kids grinding disks to demo something and how much time they spend blowing/swapping disks vs this lower cut speed but staying on task. Labor, even cheap labor quickly costs more than these things if they're spending all day swapping disks or waiting while the boss makes a store run.

Depends on your version a local store, and the increasing number of stores that carry less & less of needed items. But offer to have it shipped to you... for a fee of course. I swear companies are trying to force us to revert to th 1800's with mail order everything. All we need now is for the old Sears catalog to come back. Lol My closet local store is 40 to 45 minutes one way. The one most likely to have what I need is about a little over an hour one way. Having your last disk break is just as much of project shutdown as having to wait for a replacement to be shipped is. Plus with this type of disk you pretty much know when you are getting close to the end of it's useful life. They ware down much slower. So a little foresight & planing resolves the shipping issue.

Re: drill bit test Yes. Also plz find out how much 'handling' in warranty S&H is. Re: lifetime warranty Most of you won't know about Penney's lifetime car battery, (or even JC Penney, a clothing & bedding store). In the 70's, they decided to branch out to automotive service & limited parts. They came out w/ ,(I think), the 1st hard to open 12v battery; it had a lifetime warranty. They were a good battery, but batteries evaporate water, it's why they can't really be sealed, just hard to open. It was a good battery; used them on my SBC hot rod motors, which are hard on batteries. Warrantied a bunch of them. So did a lot of people; enough that JC Penney went bankrupt because of them. Re: non-magnetic High % of titanium would do it. Also would explain durability & expense. Re: aluminum welded to blade Try a dry cutting lube stick. Keeps Al from sticking, doesn't sling liquid cutting fluid. GeoD

No, I wouldn't spend that kind of cash . I have 5 hf bauer paddle switch grinder each with a different wheel on and may get a 6th next time I go. I wonder what the cost of the return shipping is? Bet its slightly inflated to cover the new wheel.
