the 9 series was only around what 2015, i think everything but cyberclunk will run fine on a 680 (which was around 2012). Its actually not the beauty of it, that was more so a side effect of game development stagnation from consoles having locked dated hardware and a larger consumer base. There was a time when games would actually push super high end systems. All the chip shortages and the raise of the scalper bots over the past few years didn't help matters.

Me and my brother had issues with the 570 and 580, actually, e.g. Dark Souls 3 wouldn’t very well on it at all. I’m on a 970 currently, love it, but it is time for me to upgrade 😭 If you’re only wanting to play the best games over the past decade, I think an older card is a great investment. A GTX 460 was never a "speed demon." With Nvidia cards there is a hierarchy and you can tell what tier it is at based on the numbering: The x5x is low tier, x6x tier is low-mid tier, the x7x is mid tier and x8x is high tier. The x9x are a ridiculous tier and Tesla cards are ludacris tier. The xx5 and "ti" editions are the refreshed variants of this same hierarchy. Everything with GT or GTS in front of the numbers (like GT 420) are potato-level.

But I have a 980. WWWHHHAAAAA!!!!! JK, I was very grateful that my brother-in-law just gave me a 980 6GB last year. Only thing that I had to do was get my own founder's shroud for it as he had water-cooled it and lost the original one. My gaming rig is running an i7 4790 with 32GB of DDR3 1600Mhz ram. It's 5 years old since I originally built it with an i3/16GB, and I have no plans of building a new one. It works just as I wanted it to, and barring upgrades, repairs and maintenance, I plan on having it run for at least another 5-10 years. I really don't understand the "latest and greatest" craze.

@@TheCRTProductions Not that old, in regard to it's age but old and almost outdated in my opinion, in regard to the way that technology advances. Anyway, my old gaming rig which I repurposed as a HTPC still performs admirably,in my opinion, in AAA Games at Full HD, medium-high details with different tweaks and custom settings per game. It consists of an AMD FX-8350 (stock speeds), 16 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz RAM, GTX 1070 and an old 2nd gen Kingston SSD and 5, 7 year old hard drives for plenty extra storage. Had I not built a new work/gaming PC, back in November of last year, I would have definetely kept using it, not willing to exagerately overspend to build a PC nowadays.

@pera Plejer I can fully relate to what you said. Ultimately, i think that a PC,laptop, device in general, etc becomes "old" when it becomes sluggish or it stops fulfilling your needs, in regards to it. For instance, before repurposing my old PC as a HTPC, I was using a 14 year old Acer laptop as a streaming device to my TV. It ran on good old Windows 7, a little bit sluggish, but ultimately, it did the job.

My girlfriend is currently trying to get parts for her first build and I have told her a bunch of times that it used to be much more fun because you could run things in SLI and do crazy things like that as well as having more options for what you do with your GPUs and overclocking actually providing a tangible boost. Of course that will have changed in 8 years.

Sucks that Commodore was ran by those clowns (Irving Gould and Mehdi Ali). The Amiga had so much potential. He was so busy making himself the highest paid CEO (I think it was or close to double what the CEO of IBM was making at the time.) He gutted R&D, ruined licensing deals (Sun Microsystems), and had no idea what the consumer actual wanted. Of course it all started with "Ghould" getting rid of Jack Trammel that sucked the life out of the company. Still the A500 holds a special place in my heart.

Old high-end hardware is great. One of my machines is still running a SANDY BRIDGE 3960X (I salvaged the chip from a workstation that had been thrown in the garbage at a local design shop). I installed it on an old Asus X79 mobo that I bought off ebay for $60, that came with 16GB of DDR3 on it (half its SATA ports are dead but IDC), mounted a refurbed H110i on it, and immediately OC'd it to 4.7 GHz. So I slapped a refurbed EVGA 1080TI on it and it's been running great ever since. Sure, it's 11 or 12 years old, but the chip is a beast and shows no signs of degradation, easily running everything I've thrown at it, and I'm going to keep using it until it's dead.

Almost everyone has a "old pc" story to tell, the comments are full of them, but it's all a youtuber can do, to say it's still usable. Such a disservice to viewers. I had to buy two new pc's for work but I kept older my 4790, it has a more recent GPU now, a 2070 ti that replaced a 980. Both those graphics cards run games super fast and the 4790 computer is more than enough. A pretty good processor, fast storage and graphics are all you need.

I'm running a very similar setup (4790K with an EVGA 980 SC) and have been doing just fine with it. I can't completely max out the settings in more recent games but that's not really an issue since they still look great. The thing now is that it's hard to justify upgrading when building a high-spec setup in 2021 costs twice as much as the build I did back in 2014.

I built my PC in 2015 and I am still running a 4790k and 970. It was perfect and I was completely satisfied with it until these past few months, where it really started showing its age. I was concerned that the days of good value PC builds were over, but apart from motherboard and GPU costs, parts are not really that much more expensive and for around the same price you get much more premium components now. I just ordered upgrades for everything except GPU, PSU, and storage and it didn't burn as big of a hole in my wallet as I thought it would. No way I'd be able to justify buying a new GPU right now but when Ethereum phases out GPU mining mid 2022 I'm sure it'll be possible to get used cards for around the same prices as what older 900 series cards sold for new

I never received a call or messages from them so I called them back and complained. Said they have a 3090 for me instead of losing a customer. At this point, I couldn't care less about spending another $1200 for a better card. The 3080's cost over $500 MSRP than the 3090's themselves so I consider it a steal even though it's still MSRP.
