I think my favorite part of Lotta True Crime was how she named several serial killers (David Parker Ray is known as the Toy-Box Killer and Dennis Rader is the BTK Strangler) and kind of demystifies them. She basically says that they're not these superhuman monsters, they're just privileged misogynists who felt like they had the right to kill and torture women (all three killers she named had mostly female victims). They're not special, they just hate women, even though, like she says, if they were to meet a woman ready and prepared to fight back against them, they'd be quaking. At least, that's my take on it, which is why I love the song so much.

I always feel like the "girl talk vibes" line is alluding to the fact that a lot of women have their own personal horror stories to tell that they share with friends/family/other women in order to try and prepare them for "the worst" so hearing true crime sometimes feels like "Oh Ive heard this before somewhere"

A lot of her music makes me ask if music is always supposed to make you feel good. Like, I literally love all the music I've heard from her, and I think she's super talented, but some of her songs remind me of art meant more to make you think critically about something than art meant to just be enjoyed. Other artists have obviously done this but I think Penelope Scott does it in a really interesting and fresh way
@KatBambi3 жыл бұрын
YES! THIS, A THOUSAND TIMES THIS! I’ve tried to share her songs with people, and their reaction is mostly some form of “oh ew, that’s harsh and really serious, can we listen to something more feel-good or happier?” and it frustrates me. I get it, I do, but just because music is an escapism doesn’t mean it has to be HAPPY! Yknow. Her songs, which I’ve likened to spoken word but spicier, it’s ART! and it should be treated as such. It is amazing and I wish more people in my life appreciated it as it is, not as they wanted it.
@ijornhribrudkrvir3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah totally, I mean she channels sadness and rage in such a raw and effective way, its cathartic. I think it's just as important to have songs that do that, because when you're feeling that way it feels like being understood, being heard. Her music says "I know what it's like to feel this way and I'm not going to dance around it, you have a right to feel angry and sad and hurt and scared, or even to not know what you feel at all, because your feelings are valid, whatever they are." No toxic positivity in this house!

Mommy Fwiend hits HARD. I had a male "friend" make me be his therapist in a severe situation when he knew i had OCD which i TOLD him is SEVERELY guilt based and he leveraged that to get me to continue talking to him and while i was trying to direct him to professionals he wouldnt have it. Then he made a vague comment about death and goodbyes and dissapeared for like a week and made me believe, despite hours of desperately trying to get him help, that he'd done something and it was my fault. Then popped up out of nowhere in person asking why i was so down and constantly nagged me to be happier. He put me in an absolute wreck and was half the reason i had a 2 month long mental health spiral so bad i literally dont remember half of December. If I hadnt had my Boyfriend and a Hyperfixation to be my light his actions would have messed me up even more. Like, whether it is your friend, family member or partner, dont leverage peoples guilt against them. And people with mental health issues: You ARE allowed so say no and set boundaries on how much help you give people.

To me at least, Montreal felt sort of felt like realizing that your dreams will never come true, and it absolutely crushing your will to do anything in life. That apathy and deppressive episode coming from crushed ideals leads to something you might be able to guess, and in that moment they just hope that other people can make it when they at the end of the day couldn't. At least that was my very twisted interpretation of it but everybody has different experiences, so there may be other ways to see this song too.

This is a bit outside your usual style but I've just got to recommend it, you should do Trying to Stan Dream SMP fansongs! Voices by Derivakat, Ode to L'manburg by Beetlebug, and Woe to the People of Order are particularly good :3 you may or may not cry your eyes out though haha

I think Will Wood would be an interesting video. He also has music under the label Will Wood and the Tapeworms. Some suggestions are I/Me/Myself, Love Me Normally, 2econd-2ight-2eer, Dr. Sunshine Is Dead, Cotard's Solution, ...well, better than the alternative, and Hand Me My Shovel I'm Going In. I love your videos

So! The part of a lotta true crime that's "girl talk vibes" is believed to be a reference to the many true crime channels here on KZbin, most of which are run by women, often women who do their makeup while talking about the true crime stories Thus giving a similar vibe to a sleepover girl talk night where you do each other's makeup and tell scary stories It's also about how women have to constantly be on guard while in public because of the reach of these stories informing everyone of the dangers that could happen anytime And it's not unwarranted! We need to be aware and prepared for what could happen because people like the serial killers mentioned exist It sucks, but it's true, so we inform each other of these stories to keep each other safe

I’d recommend listening to Stromae, a Belgian musician (sings in french) Songs of his that I can recommend: Papaoutai (Papa ou t’es? which means “dad, where are you?”) Carmen (inspired by the opera carmen) Tous les Même (means “All the same”) Quand c’est (pronounced similar to cancer in french and means “when?”) Formidable (means “wonderful”) Ta fête (means “To party”) All of these songs come from his album “Racine Carrée” (“square root”) and all have music videos and English lyrics in the video (either edited into them or as cc)

I love how he cares so much after every song but its penelope scott theres no fucking way ur gonna find a happy or 'Im ok' song and u know damn right that who ever is listening to it is not ok either i feel like there really great songs u can vent/ relate to addressing matters that a lot of people are to scared to or matters that arent talked about enough, because everything thing she talks about is acctully so important, heartbreaking but real also things that are not brought up enough or looked over compared to other things incuding topics that are hard to talk about and things thats people dont really care about because it may happen to a small minority of people but still causes a massive impact and a lot people dont notice that(i hope i put my point across correctly sorry for repeating my self)
