as a woc i feel like this song has a lot of themes about european beauty standards and internalized racism and the male gaze. like always wanting to be enough for white society, be attractive and ethnic but not too ethnic for them. but never being enough never fitting in and still always being in a whole different world. i interpret it that way. especially with the chorus where she talks about the mothers not approving of her and her mother. it just feels like a metaphor of how poc cultures have always been looked at as inferior.
@user-gd1tp2tc1d3 жыл бұрын
many controversies have been going on with this song. people are saying that white people shouldn't use this song on TikTok to talk abt their insecurities because it is about woc struggles. I would agree to an extent, but who said that it was about all woc? if anything, Mitsuki is talking abt her experience as an Asian woman who came from another country. If we use that logic, shouldn't this song only apply to Asian people and POC who were born in other countries? If your answer is no, and that it should be for all woc, why? I feel like most people would say it's because this song applies to ALL woc, but with that logic, shouldn't EVERYONE be able to use it? If it's just supposed to "apply" to something, than everyone should be able to use this song.
@lucid_sky95363 жыл бұрын
@@user-gd1tp2tc1d mmm depends. Things like Your Best American Girl probably yeah allude purely to the asian american experience, and other songs like Nobody can be for woc or just everybody. Music isnt an everybody or nobody situation, there are some songs that can be considered exclusive and some that cant. Simple

@@user-gd1tp2tc1d I think it depends a lot. "Your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me" specifically pertaining to how she isn't a good fit for an "All American Boy", really doesn't apply to everyone. But it COULD apply to white ppl who are immigrants or children of immigrants from places with cultures that are different from the US. Im fine with white ppl using the song or enjoying it in general, but if you're using it to talk about your own insecurities, then the insecurities in the song should apply to your situation. Most white Americans don't have this experience of being othered and alienated in America specifically because of fundamental cultural differences. Some do, but most do not. I don't think ppl should be attacked or vilified over it, but I think the conversation is important. Especially since many poc in America aren't seen as "belonging" here even if our families have been here longer than Trumps' has. White ppl aren't questioned about where they're from unless they have an accent. Many poc are questioned about that automatically, already alienated by sight regardless of if we have an accent or not. Mitski has TONS of amazing songs about insecurities that more broadly apply to appearance, mental health, unequal power dynamics, etc that ppl can use if this song doesn't apply.

Other song recommendations!! Pink in the Night - This song is so unbelievably tender and soft and lovely. Like this is what I want love to feel like. It's so beautiful. Class of 2013 - Now this song HURTS. Maybe cos it's cos I've just started going to uni so the theme of growing up hits me hard. But I think everyone can relate to that feeling of just wanting someone to care for you unconditionally. I Will - Another song about love that makes me go feral. The lyrics are so domestic and simple but hold such care as well. I'm a fairly new mitski fan so feel free to recommend some other songs as well!!!

17:55 I hear the harmony only when its harming me. To me the lyrics really remind me of ny anxiety and depression, often time when I'm struggling or when ive been unmedicated I often feel more alive. I feel like I can feel my feelings and experiences much deeper. But i always end up feeling worse or being somehow hurt by it. It feels a bit like giving up the sharper highs for a more steady tempo. In the end it rally is better but sometime I can't help but miss the highs that are placed in the middle of my lows. So yeah. That's what thise lyrics stand out as to me.

I recently found mitski and have been obsessing since then, so seeing you doing this video is great. Nobody was the first song I heard, and I had a full in panic attack afterwards. I’ve never heard a song that so fully in capsules how I’m feeling, and with the visuals of music video on top of that, it honestly felt like I was staring at myself.

If you ever do a part 2, I recommend Class of 2013. It makes me cry every time I listen to it

I would love if you did a second part to this reaction! I would recommend Fireworks, Last Words of a Shooting Star, Square, and Two Slow Dancers (and maybe Townie too!) if you do a second part :)
