Almost all romanian soups are liquid, and they are always eaten with bread. The mamaliga is never a main dish, its always eaten besides meat,and goes very well with cheese or sour cream, never bland.Also, the aubergine salad is eaten as a spread on bread. I recommend trying traditional food at restaurants that specialise in them because the supermarket ones are pretty awful.

Love your videos Ella, so happy you have started to try Romanian food! Some of the best traditional food in the world, I promise you! I am also from England (Ascot in fact!) and have lived in Bucharest for 2 years. My boyfriend is Romanian so we're lucky enough to have lots of dishes made by his Mum, but I really hope you give these dishes another try! Sarmale, ciorba de fasole, salata de boeuf, vineta are all fantastic if made in a nice local restaurant or made by a local, I haven't heard of many Romanians eating local dishes from the supermarket, just like we wouldn't eat fish n'chips from a counter in Tesco I suppose! Maybe the next time you go out to a nice restaurant in Constanta you can try them again there. And Brasov has some of the best local food too :) Just hope you give these dishes another try some day. Hope you had a great Christmas and new year with your family in the UK! Take care xxx

Mici are way better with mustard 😉 ... and also with a beer Sarmale are way better with meat. The rice ones are sort of a kosher version (we eat them in "post" which is a period before Christmas when we fast and eat no meat, dairy or eggs and no meals cooked with animal fat either). Cozonac is waaay better when home cooked (in takes hours to cook them, as well). The "jelly bits" are pieces of turkish delight. The aubergine salad is way better when home made only from aubergine, home made mayonnaise and onions. The store one has preservatives in it that change the taste of it. The papanasi are supposed to be way bigger, like the size of a donuts (the kind a policeman would have), and filled with jam inside and out. Looks like they only gave you the middle part of the donut which I consider is a scam. :( Polenta is supposed to be eaten as a side, with, for example, sarmale or cheese and cream, cheese and eggs, with fish and garlick, that sort of stuff
@m0t0b332 жыл бұрын
kosher (blessed by a rabbi) is different from fasting food (fast (subs.)= post, to fast (vb)= a posti/a tine post)... and people fast differently and definitely not just before Christmas... I mean, we don't call the Easter Fast, "The long fast" for nothing. Also we, call it "mancare de post", but you can eat some of it if you're vegetarian, vegan, etc. I agree with the rest of what you said, I just didn't want people to misunderstand things regarding the spiritual side of our culture and traditions, because it creates confusion and sparks debates from "cancel culture".

'Ciorba' is different than the 'soup' as you know it in England, in Romania we call it 'supă'. Ciorba is more watery, they are very healthy on any season, in the summer Ciorba(especially hot) makes your body temperature safe from the hot weather , and in the winter is doing the opposite, helps to get warmer, ciorba also is more common.. There are so many types... 😋 But, to understand these dishes you need to go to a restaurant to feel them as they were done fresh, trust me, they are more tastier. 'Papanasi' are more common with sour cream an sour cherry jam, if is possible black cherry, never with nutella 😂😬😅 For us is like italians seeing pineapple on a pizza, it's a disaster 😬😬😬😁 Don't buy traditional food from the market, 😬only from the restaurants, or any other romanian house 😃 Anyhow, i enjoyed you guys 🎈🎈 Happy New Year 🎶🍷

the only difference between "ciorba" and "supa" is the sourness... Soup is just vegetables, water, condiments and meat while "ciorba" is sour usually made with "bors" not lemons. Bors is fermented corn... Why are you going into these useless monologs for no reason at all.
@iv13892 жыл бұрын
God 😨, you really need some Romanian friends to teach you how to eat local food! And most importantly where to eat something quality. 👍 For example, the "ciorba" differs from one area to another. My advice is to try to be open and keep ordering "ciorba/supa" in each of the cities you visit. You will be surprised by the diversity of taste. The best "cozonac" is the one made by the mother / grandmother. You have to find a mother, grandmother, aunt skilled to fall in love with the "cozonac". You must to smell it when it ripens. 🤤 I don't continue with other examples ... I'll let the others advise you too! 🤗

1. The food from Cora may not have the total autentic taste 2 Sarmale is best with sour cream on top and yes, they are better when they have meat 3. Yes, most soups are watery, but not all of them. The ones that are not watery, in romanian we don't call them "ciorba", but "supa crema", like lentils soup or mushroom soup or even vegetable soup (if it's named "supa crema") But the traditional romanian are the ones called "ciorba", a video of foreigners trying 6 types: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3rOgXWKos-Afsk (tripe soup (ciorba de burta), meatball soup (ciorba de perisoare), beef soup, creamy chicken soup (ciorba radauteana) lentil soup (supa crema). Other of my favourites are : smoked pork and tarragon sour soup (ciorba de tarhon cu afumatura) , fish sour soup, in 2 versions, one just as fish sour soup (ciorba de peste) and another, only served in Danube Delta , the "storceag" which is like a fish puree with garlic and sour cream, totally delicious. My favourite from my mom is the purple spinach sour soup (ciorba de loboda) wich is a lighter, watery, spring soup, very fresh, pink in color from the purple spinach with an unique taste from this herb. Most "ciorba"'s are served with sour cream in them, mostly the ones that are sour. The aubergine salad (salata de vinete) is best eaten sprean on bread. Polenta (mamaliga) is better hot, with sarmale, or with salty cheese and butter or, another combination , with sour cream and fresh cheese. In traditional fanilies, mine insluded, polenta is done daily and replaces bread for whoever prefers it. PS: The foreigners in the video stayed in Romania quite a lot and made many videos, you could get inspired from them...Also, the famous Mark Wiens has a series of vlogs in Romania. Love ! :)

A lot of the stuff you tried are bought from supermarkets. Their quality tends to be quite low, which is why you don't see many romanians buy them. If you go instead to a restaurant to try them (where they're freshly cooked), you'll notice a big jump in both quality, taste and texture. Try it my way, you'll see the difference, trust me.

Go to a restaurant girl and you REALLY need to make some Romanian friends to give you the low down on where is good. This video hurts my heart because Romanian food is DA bomb! It is seriously, seriously good. All ciorbas are sour - that's the style. They are ALL delicious although if you really wanna be brave try ciorba de burta (tripe ciorba!) @DarkSignal592 жыл бұрын
I do have to say, first of all, that you compare our food to the one in the UK a bit too much, which probably lead to the low rating. When trying another country's cuisine you must first be more open to different tastes and don't compare them to what you're used to, as if starting from scratch. But not everybody is into culinary diversity, most people just like what they're used to, which is understandable. Most Romanians are like this too, if you'd give them something from the UK that's way too different. Even the ones working abroad still prefer their own food and cook it at home or open traditional restaurants. But anyway, a few details: 1. Yes, ciorba is watery, it's how it's supposed to be. We probably have around ten or so types of ciorba (excluding the soups that are not sour). The sour ones are made sour with either vinegar or bors (a fermented wheat product in liquid form). There is a type of cream soup that's common around here in restaurants but I'm pretty sure it's foreign cuisine, not traditional. 2. Sarmale are definitely supposed to be eaten with meat inside, they are just not as savory in their vegetarian state although still good. The cabbage leaves are pickled in brine, that's why you have the sour taste. You can also wrap sarmale in vine leaves. 3. Mici are supposed to be fatty and have their juices drip as you bite into them. It's that juiciness and fluffiness that makes mici what they are. If mici are overcooked they lose most of that fat and harden, but they are ruined that way. Also, meant to eat with lots of mustard. 4. Cozonac with butter?....I...I need a moment 😐 But no, it's not supposed to be toasted cake. Also, the jelly is Turkish delight. 5. Papanasi, they're basically just donuts with one added ingredient that's game changing: sweet cow cheese. They are basically cheese donuts, topped with jam and sour cream. Traditionally, that's how you serve them, as chocolate is definitely not traditionally Romanian. But I'm sure they're great with Nutella. They're easy to make at home so you could try it. 6. Mamaliga is basically traditional bread, so to say, as it serves the role of bread. You eat it as you would bread, with soups, meat etc. If you want to eat it as a main dish try "bulz". It's mamaliga with salted cow cheese, butter, and sometimes egg and bacon inside also. 7. Aubergine salad is a spread, you eat it on bread, not by itself. Wow, that turned into quite the wall of text. not even sure if you're gonna bother reading this.

Ciorbă is always very liquid and there are a lot of variants which change also based on where you are, we have: -soup with vegetables and plants, the main vegetable usually are potatoes (some add also beet to it, like my mom) or beans -soup with vegetables, plants and cream (the version you ate), based on where you are you can also add meat, but where I live are used only vegetables, plants and cream -with different types of meat, but with same vegetables and plants -with the fish head and vegetables, plants The vegetables my mom usually uses are: carrots, peppers, onion, usually also potatoes, if it's not the version with beans. The plants my mom usually uses are: celery and parsley. But we have also a less liquid variant which is called mâncărică (where you put flour) with similar variant to ciorbă. My favourite it's the ciorbă with potatoes and beet. The sarmale with the meat are the best. Ah and also the recipe canges based on where you are. In south, for example, people use more meat than we use in north. Personally I think my mom's are the best. It's alright if you don't like it, for me as well as a Romanian, our food it's a hit or a miss, and it depends a lot if the person that made it it's a good cook. For example, I'm more than sure that if you tasted my mom's sarmale, you would have liked them more, I can't say that it would have been a 10 for you, but for sure a solid 8. And inside cozonac there are Turkish delight, you are right, the one made at home it's better and fluffier.

Lolz. This was harder to watch than expected 😂 As a piece of advice, don't buy pre-packaged food from supermarket or at least try the stuff from Gusturi Romanesti, from mega. They are generally better than most other brands.. now, for the holidays, they have all kinds of traditional meals caseroles, like 'salata de boeuf' and sarmale and piftie, etc. But really, you should try a good restaurant, with good reviews. Or rely on some romanian friends that know where to take you guys. Also, all 'ciorbe' are sour soups. They are soured with either borsch or tomatoes or lemon juice. Try 'ciorba radauteana' and 'ciorba de perisoare' as the most appreciated ones. Ciorba a la grec is also very good if done right.. it contains sour cream as well. Also, sarmale should really be the meat ones, with just the right mix of pork and beef. Not all sarmale are made the same, so it's important you find a good reastaurant or romanians that stick to the traditional recipe and cooking secrets. Of course, this depends on the region of the country as well.. I'm sure you will get to eat again some of these recipes and you will find they taste different, depending on the place or region you went to.

Now I saw Romanian cuisine went more internationally, but the traditional food is really good, because it was more elaborated. Stay with what brings more comfort for you.

Hi @Ella Slingsby! 1. About ciorba and soup in Romania: - both ciorba and soup are watery in Romania - ciorba is a Romanian word borrowed from Turkish or Russian. - ciorba is much richer than soup, it has more ingredients than soup. - the Romanian soup has between 2 and 4-5 ingredients (depends on how many ingredients you have on the spot when you decide to start making soup), ciorba has usually more than 5. 1. About soups in Romania: - all soups are watery. - depending on the ingredients you have at your disposal when starting to make soup, there are the following types of soups: plain soup, soup with noodles, soup with semolina dumplings (dumplings are just semolina mixed with eggs), cream soup. - Plain soup can have 2-5 ingredients (besides water): 1 vegetable (usually potato, carrot, parsnip) and meat (can be chicken, rooster, turkey, veal, beef, lamb, pork), or meat with above mentioned combined vegetables. - Soup with noodles must have at least 3 ingredients: 1 vegetable, meat and noodles - Soup with semolina dumplings must have at least 3 ingredients as the noodles one. - In some regions of Romania, people add sour cream or yoghurt or a hint of black pepper to the soup when serving. - Cream soups (no meat in them) are usually using 1 or more vegetables in them and there are a few kinds. The most commonly found ones in the restaurants are tomato soup, carrot soup and mixed vegetables soup. There are also some rarely found in restaurants ones: peas soup, celery soup. Some people add sour cream to cream soups (except the tomato or carrot ones). I'll continue with ciorbas in a following post.

Papanași (mind that ș letter, pronounced as sh) can be combined with anything you like, including Nutella, or any other sweet paste option. The papanași variant you tried is the fried one, really tasty, indeed. Well, you have to know (or maybe you are aware, tough) that other option of papanași is a boiled one, the base dough is different, it is mixed with cheese, and believe me it is simply delicious, too. In Romania we say: E așa de bună, că nu te poți opri (It is so good, that you cannot stop eating). If you never tried it, then this could be a good reason to travel again to Romania. Ella, you know those videos where they're eating different foods at different prices ($, $$, and $$$) You ate sarmale and ciorba from supermarket which I might put it below $ ... never buy traditional food from a supermarket lol... next time try sarmale and other traditional foods at a traditional restaurant. And use all the sauces they give you. They give them to you for a reason. That's why mici are supossed to be eaten with mustard. You literally ate aubergine paste aka vinete with a spoon, which is a big NO. I would vomit eating it by the spoon. ALSO supermarket vinete suck. If you ever get the chance, maybe when your parents come visit again... go to a traditional restaurant and try ALL of these AGAIN there. I promise you will rate them all at least an 8.

You've been in Romania for a year and only now to try local food..... sorry but I see in this the same attitude behind Brexit: the rejection of Europe, it's culture and influence. I mean, whenever I go abroad first thing I do is look for local food and beer to see what's what... Worst of all, the way you eat the food shows you haven't asked your colleagues for tips. The eggplant salad is meant to be eaten with bread, which would completely change its texture. Also, the salad from Mega is absolute trash. Try one made by a good restaurant. Cozonac has bits of turskish delight in it not jelly. U are not supposed to put butter on it but eat it with milk for example. And it goes on and on. As I said, get some tips from.your Romanian colleagues.

On "ciorba" it has parsnip,veggies .. On"sarmale" is nice if you add on top the greek yoghurt on cold weather or festive season like Easter or Christmas.. On "cozonac" is nice with warm milk because is too dry to taste it.. On"mici" you need mustard and meat it could be both either beef or pork.. You should try Kaufland food truck outside the enter you will love it🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

I love your videos, this one amused me a bit because for every country you visit, you need a local friend to act like a guide and explain a few cultural differences, otherwise you end up buttering a cozonac slice :) I admire how open minded you are, not sure I would be that brave to try random foreign dishes, so I'll keep watching you (in a non stalker-ish way :P)

So ofc you can have ur own opinion, but imma give ya some tips on how to enjoy this food more: 1. You gotta eat that soup with bread. It may not sound like a big deal, but it tastes way better. Also yeah, most of our soups are liquidy. 2. Use a fork when eating sarmale pleaseeeeee. But also, you can pair it with mamaliga and sour cream. And you may like it better wrapped in wine leafes. 3. Try the mici with mustard. It's way better. 4. If you don't like cozonac, that's ur opinion, I won't comment, but it doesn't compare with the homemade one. Thaat's way better. 5. Salata de vinete is basically aubergine mashed potatoes. You gotta eat it on bread to, it tastes way better.

Hi Ella, I am from Romania, but I live in Birmigham, UK. I just saw your video about Traditional Romanian good, you will need someone to help you how to pair them,. Anyway try Hanul lui Manuc in Bucharest, or visit Brasov, Sergiana Restaurants. Might be a unique experiece to try some accomodation in some remote mountain villages, where shepherds can cook for you. All the best!

Well done for trying such different foods from the ones you are used to. I love " salată de vinete" the aubergine dip known in English as Baba Ganoush. And , baba ganoush is healthy. The main ingredient is aubergine/eggplant, which is low in calories and carbohydrates and high in fiber. It's also a good source of vitamins and minerals like potassium and vitamin K. It's also lower in calories than hummus since it's mostly made of 🍆🍆 versus chickpeas.

About ,,mici'' it can also depend from where you buy them (what place) or who cooked them. You can find kinda meh mici or good mici or great tasting mici. The mici can also be served while having some fried potatoes near them / on the plate. Also we usually eat mici while also having / serving a BEER. (or drink at least a Cola if you don't usuaIIy drink alcohol).

Maan, I can't believe I missed this video! I could've told you that you only bought traditional food just by name, but not by recipe and serving methods, which are a big part of the experience, and I always rally for these foods to be home made because that's when they're at their best... well maybe excepting "mici" , which should've come with bread and mustard, not bun and fries, but if the recipe is right, they taste amazing and definitely "ask" for a beer.

Supa is soup which you can eat without bread and you have ciorba which is broth and that yoy eat with bread. The soup is clear like chichen soup or vegetable soup,both warm and cozy in the winter and refreshing in the hot summer days our version of gazpacho. Then you have the broth that can be made with potatoes(ciorba de cartofi cu afumatura),meat dumplings(ciorba de perisoare),bean broth(ciorba de fasole) and more.

@lucianatrifu3230 Жыл бұрын
Guys, ciorba can be made with all sorts of meat, but also veggies only. The sour taste of ciorba comes most often from borsh, which is a liquid obtained by fermenting wheat or barley bran. What you ate, ciorba a la grec, is actually a Greek recipe, that is why they used lemon juice. Not very Romanian :). We also cook soups, which are sweet, meaning no borsh, but also cream soups. Mamaliga is supposed to be eaten as a side dish, it goes very well with sarmale and sour cream. You can have mamaliga next to fried eggs and a mixture of grated feta cheese and sour cream. Mamaliga is never eaten on its own. The aubergine salad (salata de vinete) is to be eaten as a spread, on bread, not on its own. You should give it another try.

Cornmeal can be enjoyed while in liquid for as a hot porridge like treat or you can solidify it and then mix it up with a hot or cold bowl of milk and it becomes like a bowl of cereal. It was my favorite after dinner snack!

Romania is not England! Ciorba is not a soup. is broth You do not take away mici neither buy a supermarket cozonac. You do not eat sarmale like a sausage - better hot with sour cream and with polenta aside eventually (vegetarian sarmale do not exist , is not sarmale anymore). Never seen someone eat mici with ketchup... Find romanian friends and go to them family and have a meal together. Do not buy crap food and say that is traditional romanian food! Find friends, Cheers! Ps: read what Catherine Baxter and Stefan Hurdubeti said to you because all you did you did it wrong...sorry.

About mici (minced meat rolls): - There are various kinds of mici, usually made of 1 type of meat or made of meat mixes. - Mandatory ingredients in mici: meat (NEVER bird meats), finely crushed garlic, baking soda, black pepper, sweet paprika powder or chili powder, allspice powder. - The most traditional and SADLY ALMOST FORGOTTEN recipe of mici contains ONLY BEEF as the meat ingredient. - Currently made mici in Romania are made of pork or mutton used as single meat ingredients or various mixes - Meat mixes used to make mici: pork + mutton; pork + beef, beef + mutton - Mici are served with sweet mustard, mustard with horseradish paste in it or hot mustard (chili powder added to sweet mustard)

This is really funny to see how you eat some of the romanian food. You should find a romanian to guide you :). 1) I don't expect you to find in a supermarket a really good ciorba, try to have one in a restaurant. I recomend you one of these soups: Ciorba de fasole cu afumatura, Ciorba radauteana, Ciorba de vita, Supa cu galuste. 2) sarmale... if you really want to try sarmale, the same, try to find some home made or from a restaurant, and also, if you chose for the vegetable only sarmale, don't expect to taste the real sarmale. 3) mamaliga/polenta, we eat like a side dish, with sour cream, cheese, sarmale (instead of bread), meat, etc you can chose one of these or some of them for example: mamaliga with fried eggs and white cheese and sour cream... that will be very good. 4) don't expect a real/good cozonac at 5-10 lei. That is only a "cozonac" wannabe, but try one home made or from a "Patiserie" or "Cofetarie", I don't know any to recommend you in Constanta but you need to expect to pay 50-80 lei/kg for a good cozonac. Maybe you cand find a good cozonac using this app: www.cozoapp.ro/. But now this is out of season... I don't know if you will be able to find any. I can see that you've got the same message from everybody, cooked food from supermarket is not very good, maybe the best you can find in a supermarket ready to eat food area are: some salads, chicken grill, and the list is done.

"sarmale" can be done in two ways. In cabage or vine leaf i personally prefer more the one in vine leaf, but the cabage ones are easyer to make so it's the only one you'll find to buy in supermarkets. Anyway both of them are way better with sour cream

Ciorba de burta is the best Romanian food also Racituri are very traditional during new year. You should also try Varza a la Cluj, Hot Palenta with cold Milk, Ardei Umpluti and Cock Soup with homemade noodles. If you like haggis whe have caltabos. It's similar but becouse is made half with mince meat is way better. You should also try Romanian frash cheeses like Branza de Vaca proaspata not telemea, Urda that is a sweat sheep cheese and Branza de burduf that is like feta but not as solty. Burduf you can find in all supermarkets but branza de Vaca and Urda you can find only in the markets. You should have bought Cozonac from a bakery. It would have been way softer, fresher maibe even worm and has less chemicals . It looked like it stood on that shelf for months. Happy New Year

Go to a Romanian restaurant and try these, they are hundred times better. Sarmale always with meat, polenta, hot peppers and cream (smântână). Mici with mustard and a beer are a delicacy. Cozonac needs to be home made, it’s a must. You should try more soups (ciorbă), we got so many types which are too good.

Ciorba it's Sour Soup, i prefer the beans with smoked pork in a loaf of bread The aubergines salad paste, it's a lot better when you do it at home, store brought ones are usually not that good Good mici (the skinless sausages like kebab) you can find decent ones at Kaufland, and they serve it with a good type of mustard, also you should go for mustard rather ketchup

There is Corbe/Borș and soups in Romanian cuisine. Ciobe incl.Borș are by definition sour whereas soups are never sour meaning they taste neutral/light sweet. Ciorbe can be made using vinegar or lemon, but very typical is the use of borș a lquid that consists of fermented barley or wheat bran -similarly a sour soup made with borș is itself called borș. The russian or ukrainian style of borș (borsht) uses beet root and cabbage and is called borș ucrainian in Romanian.

Ciorba spelled in English: try tshorber or chorber. Find out which of them fits the most to the Romanian word. Ciorba compared to soup is more complicated in terms of ingredients used to make it. Ciorba can be all vegetable (root veggies) or vegetable with meat. Some ciorbas may have rice in them, some don't. Almost all ciorbas have at least 1 mandatory ingredient in them : onion - finely diced , boiled or partly fried, or tomato juice or crushed tomatoes. Usually both of them are used in a ciorba. Ciorbas are either sour or sweet in Romania, never hot (spicy). Some ciorbas are served with spicy peppers (side served veggie). Traditional sweet ciorbas: - ciorba de fasole cu afumatura - beans with smoked meat (usually pork - smoked bacon, smoked pork leg, smoked pork neck). Spicy pepper as a side veggie is optional - ciorba de pui - chicken ciorba with various veggies (carrot, celery, tomatoes (or no tomatoes), bell peppers, parsnip, greens). Some people use also noodles in it. Rice is optional. - ciorba de vitel or ciorba de vaca - veal or beef ciorba with various veggies. Noodles and rice are optional. - ciorba de porc - pork ciorba with various veggies. Noodles and rice are optional. - veal/beef ciorba and pork ciorba can be made sour ciorbas if you add borsch, or vinegar, or sauerkraut juice in them Traditional sour ciorbas: - ciorba de vitel/ vaca - ciorba de porc - ciorba de legume - veggie ciorba - ciorba de varza cu afumatura - sauerkraut with smoked meat, and greens. Some people add potatoes to it. There may be many other ciorbas besides those mentioned above that I don't remember right now.

If you like vinegar more than lemon , you can try that soup ( a la grec )next time with vinegar. To be honest, I like it better with vinegar. I am pretty sure that if you will try some homemade sarmale , you will like them 😁 I don really love chips in bread , as a sandwich . I use to do that a lot when I was in Romania, haven’t done it in a while but will do it soon 😋 If you would like to try again that aubergine salad , try it in a restaurant. Actually, all that you tasted, you need to try them in a different location, not the store bought ones . That salad I doing it with mayonnaise and diced red onions on a slice of bread

Ciorba de vacuta (Beef Ciorba) is the best, but again, it depends where you get it from and how it is made. Ciorba de pui a la grec is one of my least favorite. Ciorba de fasole (Beans Ciorba) is a bit more creamy and very, very good. Has a smoky bacon flavor, also part of the traditional cuisine.
