3 snacks that came screaming to the surface from long lost memories were 1) sour cream spread on white bread and sprinkled with salt, 2) cream cheese on celery with salt, and 3) cold gelatinized leftover beef gravy on bread with salt and pepper. I’m so white and middle class 😂 but just thinking about them is making my mouth water. Or fried bologna sandwiches with yellow mustard! I'm south african so you might not have all of the things i used to eat as a kid. 1) weetbix (its a bar of compressed wheat flakes). You typically would put it in milk and when it gets soft stir into a porridge consistency. However the way i would eat it is dry, broken in half, covered in butter and dipped into a mug of hot tea. It was crunchy, salty, with a bit of creamy from the butter and sweet from the tea. 2) marie biscuits with butter. They were a very plain dry biscuit so the butter was a necessity. 3) i mentioned this on another video but coffee with toast and cheese. Dip the cheese toast in the coffee for a sweet/salty melty cheese combo.

Y'all we used to eat refried beans mixed with a little bit of mayo on two white breads like a sandwich. Now heat them in the microwave for a minute and mix them, they will taste so good!

I feel like I have the ballad of a chef similar to Anthony Bourdain someone who appreciates things from my past that are cheap, poor and made very well and provide comfort in nostalgia, while at the same time I can appreciate fine dining, that also offers exquisite taste. Is this an Australian thing? There was a biscuit called marie in the Philippines too. Used to be very popular until they changed it. Used to be the size of a small saucer wrapped in a stack of 4. It got a unique packing. Never seen any biscuits wrapper like that. They changed the size to match the other biscuits and the packaging but the worst is how they changed the flavor altogether. It used to be so good with sugar on top. Now, no sugar. Thanks for reminding me of marie. How the mighty have fallen. From something so ubiquitous cause it’s the go-to biscuit of choice mothers give their baby and toddlers to people of any ages to something just in the memories of us. Some people still buy them but it’s no where near as popular as before. Maybe i’ll buy a pack on my next grocery shopping just to relive the past. Lol

I'm Iranian and as a super quick lunch or dinner, esp if you're travelling and don't have any groceries, was to have a few cans of tuna, raw onion and Persian flat bread. You chop up the onions and squeeze Persian lime and salt on them, and let them sit, and then pour that oniony lime juice into the cans alongside more lime juice. Then you make little bites with the tuna and onion and eat it w a cola. Literally my comfort meal canned tuna is so so good. Oh! And for some reason back then in iran it was common to boil your tuna cans for 20 mins before eating!!! Not sure why maybe it was health and safety issues with canning practises? It sucked because if we were eating this it means we were rly hungry and wanted smth fast, but had to wait 30 mins for the can to boil and cool 😭

I really want to try this esp bc Doug said it hits different than Chicken of the sea.. so now I’m intrigued! LoL I can’t get my husband to eat canned tuna for anything, not even white packed in olive oil which I think is delicious. I pour the olive oil out and either pour it over my dogs kibble or save it for later when frying up a steak or something but it gives the tuna an extra component of flavor that is really delicious. So the reason why my hubby won’t go near canned tuna is bc we grew up in the era (the 70’s) when the tuna casserole was born. LoL It was economical to serve a family of 5 or larger esp if you used that cheap junky (my husband’s words) canned tuna that looked unidentifiable as a meat source. It started out not being too bad but apparently his mom made it more often than desired. LoL Did anyone else grow up in the tuna casserole era? Admittedly, the tuna that Jeanelle is sharing with us kind of looks like that “junky” tuna from our past but Doug made it sound like the flavor was different from the average can of American tuna so now I just have to try it! LoL 👍🏼😊🌻

By chance, did you have "pulot" when you were a kid in PH? Street vendors usually have these thick honey in tin cans then stick a bamboo skewer in the can to roll a lollipop sized spindle(?). Super cheap and memorable snack.

My kids, and grandkids love my peanut butter toast Toasted bread, spread margarine over toast, then a nice layer of peanut butter evenly across it. They ask for this.

I think this might be just my family, but my mom used to make me saltine crackers and canned frosting chocolate in particular. Vanilla is ok but nothing hits like betty crocker chocolate frosting on a saltine. I still eat that now.

What was addictive for me was eating salmon in a can with the bones. I would eat the bones too and i loved it.
