Hi there! The way the dampers work is that when you're going forwards, the rear damper should be opened and the front damper closed. That's so that the air isn't rammed into the front of the firebox like a scoop, disturbing the coal bed and over-cooling the firebox. Instead, the air is allowed to be sucked in, by the fire, from the rear. When going in reverse, it's the opposite way. If you have both dampers open, it doesn't help the fire. You might also have noticed that there were a lot of flames in the cab at times. That happens when there isn't enough draft to keep the fire inside the firebox. It happens when you're travelling fast with the throttle closed and no blower. The cure is to create draft, with the throttle and/or blower. The cylinder cock linkages are fully animated, on both sides, all the way from the handle in the cab to the actual actuator cranks. You can watch it in action from outside using the C key to work the handle.
@Smokebox2 жыл бұрын
Also, I think you might have had the handbrake on (on the tender). The / key toggles it (or you can click on the actual handbrake wheel behind the fireman).

Fun Fact the original 119 was one of the earliest locomotives that was built with an injector and the extended smokebox, because before then you had to use the crosshead pumps to inject water into the boiler and you could only do that while on the run. As for the color, the replica does have the same color pallet as the original, but some argue that the colors are in the wrong places, which is difficult to determine as there are only black and white photos of the original. those pre water valves are for putting steam into the feedwater pipes to pre-heat the steam before going into the boiler.
@hartjdr.agustin97452 жыл бұрын
I comment down that earlier as well about the 119, moreover the injectors was in fact had been applied to all of locomotives of the UP by its Chief Mechanical Engineer Isaac Congdon.

20:10 Warning: you can’t go up to 50mph because once you reach the speed limit, you’ll have piston damage by 10%, increasing more until you hit 100% which cause a big puff of steam to eject out from the rear head cylinder, similar to how 844 piston damage occurs at 140mph.

Smoke box is just, yeah. Hyce - 2022
@andrewlucia8652 жыл бұрын
Just to let you know Hyce, you were fighting your locomotives handbrake the entire time. Smokebox's 1860's era stuff works on the games handbrake system, in order to simulate the individual brakemen. As a result, the handbrakes are only ever fully on or fully off, and the whistle signals release or apply the handbrakes in a fairly unwieldy manner (basically, NEVER sound a single tiny blast from the whistle while moving unless you want to stop, you WILL lose a lot of speed if you do, if not outright grind to a halt). You can manually work the brakes in the Coupling menu, they are controlled by the little cog symbol underneath each car. If there isn't a cog symbol, that car doesn't have handbrakes to apply. Another tip about Smokebox's 1860's locomotives: the Locomotive/Tender (depending on the locomotive) handbrakes are NOT controlled by the whistle signals, probably because the Engineer would be the one releasing them in the first place. As a result of this, you were fighting your locomotive's handbrake the entire way down.
@vaudevillian72 жыл бұрын
@@techno1561 no the handbrake is separate from both
@andrewlucia8652 жыл бұрын
@@techno1561 You could certainly argue that it should, given that IRL, the Handbrake is just a manual chain-and-pully/ratchet system to apply the brake shoes, but the game counts them as three separate systems, as Vaudevillian pointed out. Besides which, its entirely possible that the reading Hyce had about the train brake was just the game getting confused, since Smokebox's 1860's steam locomotives don't even HAVE a Train brake OR Locomotive brake system, only the handbrakes and throwing the cutoff lever into reverse.

This engine truly is beautiful. The one thing I'm still confused about is why the boiler pressure couldn't keep up. Maybe it's just an 1860's thing
@Smokebox2 жыл бұрын
The dampers weren't set correctly (and the tender handbrake was on all the time). The dampers are operated with those two red handles sticking up from the floor. The left is the front damper, the right one is for the rear damper. When going forwards, the front damper should be closed (handle down) and the rear damper has to be open (handle up). With practice, it's easy to keep the boiler pressure at around 119 pounds. You just have to watch the gauge carefully and as soon as you notice the pressure dropping, even slightly, back off on the throttle and reduce the cutoff (bring the reverser back one or two notches). When you see the needle rising again, it means you can open the throttle and/or give the loco more cutoff. Basically, use the throttle and reverser to balance the steam usage with the steam generation, prioritising maintaining boiler pressure over speed. Also, there's no point trying to go fast if the boiler pressure is falling. Allow the loco to slow down to the point where it's using less steam and not using it up faster than it can be produced (it's all about horsepower). Do that and you can't really go wrong.
