Liked and subscribed, everyone quoted me $130 to 400 or $500 to do a job like replacing the pinion seal and only the pinion seal, although it was irritating I managed to do it in just under 40 minutes right before the rain hit.

I do understand greasing the shaft to build a grease wall to help the seal do its job better. I have always packed the backside of the seal with petroleum jelly. When the shaft reaches a certain temp the jelly liquefies and lubricates the seal.

Wow, I don't know if I would just brapp the used pinion nut back on. I would get a new pinion nut, leave the axles disconnected and use a yoke holding tool and tighten by hand checking the preload with an inch pound indicator. But first check the existing preload with the indicator before removing the yoke. This preload is also weighing the diff gear assembly so you can't just set it by the books for a used bearing set. Any how thanks for posting the video!

I have pretty much the same jeep, lately, I have noticed a thunk noise when going over bumps- I took the right wheel off and the thunk is the axle moving 1/8 " in and out without the brake attached. ** What is the normal play in and out for an axle? *** There is no problem with the movement or running, it just sounded like something was loose. Just a side note: has 160,000, and I just replaced all of the rear parts (shocks, spring, control arms upper and lower), along with the front suspension. (everything but the knuckle and hub) I like everything to be tight.

Isnt there a specific torque spec for the pinion nut , so it sets the proper lash on the pinion gear and doesn’t over crush the crush sleeve creating a tight lash situation ?
@Tomsfoolery.4 жыл бұрын
Pinion preload was set when the crush sleeve was first crushed down so just tighten the pinion nut back up. Make sure it’s tight but try not to crush the crush sleeve any further or pinion preload will increase. It’s not the end of the world if it does slightly. I’ve done it that way for over twenty years. Never one issue.
@paullarkin82826 жыл бұрын
Thanks for video.... how do you know how tight to put the pinion nut. Doesnt it come with a factory preload that needs to be tightened back with some precision?
@Tomsfoolery.6 жыл бұрын
Because the preload was already set when the crush sleeve was crushed, snug it down and give it another braap of the gun. I usually turn the pinion by hand as I'm doing it to make sure I don't over tighten it. You want a little resistance when it turns but not to where you can't spin it by hand.

My brothers 2004 jeep grand cherokee 2.7CRD has a fluid leak from N/S rear bearing seal. Ive read conflicting reports that the seal next to the bearing end is just a dust seal to protect the bearing and the seals that need to be changed are in the diff itself? we changed the bearing and seal about a month ago and noticed the axle was soaked in diff oil but we assumed it was supposed to be like that.
@Tomsfoolery.6 жыл бұрын
We are talking about a rear axle, correct? That is not a dust seal. It’s an oil seal for the rear axle housing. The bearing is lubricated by the gear oil in the differential. There are no inner axle seals on the rear axle, only the front axle has them.
@Glenn77196 жыл бұрын
Yes, rear axle. And thank you for clearing that up. As i said, just read conflicting reports, some saying seals in the diff and the bearing is supposed to be greased, some saying the bearing is lubed by the diff oil which is what i thought. And i thought it was a bit suspect as i couldnt find a diff seal kit for it. :D
@Glenn77196 жыл бұрын
And the reason i am here, a month later my brother reported that the wheel was really hot after a long drive and was that hot it was smoking. I am not sure if its a caliper or bearing issue, not looked at it yet, just seems a bit dodgy condering we only changed the bearing a month or so ago, (ebay bearing, maybe just cheap made in China quality)
@Tomsfoolery.6 жыл бұрын
I would first suspect the brake caliper hanging up. It would take a tremendous amount of heat at the bearing to migrate to the wheel. Get a laser thermometer and drive it a bit. Take readings off each side. Read the heat on each rotor in comparison to each wheel.
@Glenn77196 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick replies. I will look into it, i thought it was the caliper also.

If there is a whining noise in the rear and it changes under accel/decel you probably have worn pinion bearings.

Why'd you wait until the junk seal was off before you got the heavier portion of the gunk off.. I agree the paper towel does mostly work, but you already sealed the back up so anything going in, is staying in. If you do it while the old seals on.. then you only have to clean the mating area with the face open.. Other than that, good video, watched it hoping you'd post a torque spec for the little pinion bolt, but I found it once I found my manual. Also making a mark inside on the 32mm nut before taking it off would keep you from having to guess where to tighten it down to..
