Just a correction: The OD/TS808 came out in 1979, not 1970.

my tubescreamer was the first pedal i bought that i instantly fell in love with to the point where i never plug in my guitar without it... unless im playing the cleanest sound i can get, but any blues, rock, and metal this baby is on i usually use it with the level at 2:00 and the drive at 0, but if im using a lower output pickup 8.k ill put the drive up a bit, this in combo with my evh 5150 overdrive is a combo made in heaven!!!!!

Nice video and nice description/explanation of the Tube Screamer "thing." *_Here's my take:_* It's the TS-808 for me. I tried the TS-9. It didn't sound as good on my rig(s). (Try them both to find out which one works best for you. Cross your fingers. If you're lucky it'll be the less-expensive TS-9 instead of the TS-808.) *_How I use it:_* As a "clean" boost into an already clipping or crunching amp. But it's not clean. The circuit is such that it always adds grit. Even if the "Overdrive" knob is all the way down, it adds a tiny bit of crunch. I almost always use it with "Overdrive" on 0, "Level" on max and "Tone" at a little less than halfway. (About 10:00 to 11:30 "o'clock.") *_What it does:_* Used this way, it adds a fair amount of crunch, slightly brightens the tone and tightens up flubbiness in the low end. "Crispy-crunchy" is one way to put it. Another way would be to compare it to the way crunching rhythm guitars sound when you double-track them, if you've ever done that. You'll have noticed how recording the same passage two times thickens but tightens and brightens the sound of your rig, especially if you pan the two passes hard right and left. Now, the Tube Screamer doesn't "stereofy" your sound, but it does give it that tighter, brighter tone and adds crunch. It even works on transistor practice amps like Marshall MG's and what-have-you. There's a reason why these pedals are so popular and that is that they work and sound good doing it. If you enjoy heavy rock guitar tone from about 1979 on (when the TS-808 was introduced, not 1970 as erroneously stated in the video), you have already heard the Tube Screamer on dozens if not hundreds, maybe even thousands of recordings of heavy guitar.

Personally I prefer the TS9 over the TS808. However I recommend the Maxon OD-9. It is identical to the TS9 but much cheaper. I compared it to a vintage TS9 from 1983 that I have at home and I couldn't hear any difference.

The 808 is always my favorite screamer.. but after my SD-1, the Sugar Drive and my Angry Driver. My JB-2 is absolutely my favorite dirt pedal

SD1>Tube Screamer just like White Zombie>Rob Zombie I got an SD1 and an OCD and they’re fine for me. I guess if I ever wind up with a single coil guitar I might like a Tube Screamer on it but SD1 on humbuckers all day long!

As I've grown a bit older, I always tend to lean towards tone that sounds "smoother/ creamier" rather than "bright, harsh, agressive". Back in my twenties it was all about low mid, high bass and treble. Now as I'm almost 40 years old, I like something that is smoother, easier on the ears and more "musical".

I love the SG, but when doing a video on TS pedals, you gotta play a Strat or Tele on the neck pickup at least some of the time.

Awesome job man thanks for featuring the ruby red ts9..I was lucky enough to get one on original release last winter and took a couple months to finally receive it..I thought there were only 2000 made so I was really stoked but now seeing they're still available I wonder if I was correct in reading that?! Killer pedal either way..just curious how many were actually made..🤘😁🎸🎶☮️

I use a blackstar club 40 (with the 6L6) with my Line 6 HX Effects. I dont use anything in front of amp, but wonder if would be worth it to toss a TS9 infront for that old 80's Hair Metal sound. For me, that Ratt type sound is almost better than sex lol

I bought the ts9 turbo recently and it was brand new in the box. Why are we not able to buy an actual BRAND NEW TS10? Used ones are crazy expensive for obvious reasons but you would think Ibanez would say, "hey i bet if we re-release the TS10, people will buy em."

I have both....and the difference is very noticeable when you play the 2...ts9 is a bright pedal and gritty ..the 808 is smooth and not as bright..it's analog...I think of it like this..the difference between a perfectly round wheel and one that has teeth like a gear

They’re ubiquitous for a reason… great pedals that have been user accross so many genres… unfortunately, it’s not for me. Got a TS9 in the early 2000s and just have never got on with it no matter what way I use it… finally have given up on it and it’s going up on Reverb any day now. I so wanted to love it. Everyone else who uses one sounds amazing (including Dagan)… I sound like a large hairy dog with bowel issues.

@@marshalltippit7479 cool I got a Ruby red beretta special a couple months ago. Mine wasn’t playable out of the box but I wasn’t expecting too much for 215 shipped. I wanted something bare bones to do some budget upgrades to just mess with and it’s been fun. I haven’t been able to find a answer if the specials and vintage share the same necks and bodies ? It’s a great body and neck for a 200 dollar guitar but I wouldn’t be impressed if it was a 700 dollar guitar is what I’m saying . I know the vintage has a JB and Floyd. I’m pretty sure the fit and finish is better on the beretta vintage . They are fun though even though they aren’t anything like the OG Kramer Sagan’s white pacer and the others from the original companies run

Are you on drugs? The TS808 was first released in 1979! Not even the MXR Distortion +, DOD 250, and Boss OD1, which all came before the 808, were around in 1970. They all came along in the mid to late 70s. Before that there were no overdrive or distortion pedals, only fuzzes. Jeez! You need to watch Josh Scott's (of JHS) video on the history of distortion/overdrive pedals
