In this episode of Talking Trains, Murf & John are joined by former railroad dispatcher and dispatcher trainer, Steve "Breezy" Gust, to talk about what prototype railroad dispatchers do.
Steve was a dispatcher for many years, and also worked as a dispatcher trainer. His "A Day In The Life Of" presentation was given at the "Rails By The Bay 2021" national NMRA convention, and provides insight about the job that you may find surprising!

I had the pleasure of working with Steve when he was the “LA terminal dispatcher” he was well liked by the crews, always answered the radio and got outstanding cooperation from the crews. LA is an end point on the railroad, lots of originating and arriving trains, plenty Of things to go wrong, and you had to be on the ball. Steve definitely kept his eye on the ball and as as a conductor I learned some things about dispatching that I didn’t know. We all had a job to do and on the “CAN DO” Southern Pacific it definitely demanded teamwork. Cheers Steve! I hope to meet up some day and talk about railroading.

A pleasure. Thank goodness for TWC and DTC. Makes for easy dispatching. Many model railroads never have signals. Add a dispatcher to your operations to make for another crew job. Can even do a remote DS when crew participation is hampered by weather or distance. Steve "Breezy" Gust, great presentation. Out.

I had the pleasure of learning from and working with Steve in Roseville from 1991 to 1993, as well as a bunch of other excellent people at Southern Pacific. Steve is also an excellent musician.

Great stuff Breezy John And Murf! As an Espee modeler here working on signaling over the Cascades also this was a fun collaboration. I appreciate these Southern Pacific topics you guys have put together (especially in my circa 78’) and look forward to seeing more Thanks guys

As a retired dispatcher for Light Rail, we would occasionally talk to Roseville dispatcher 72 if my memory is accurate from 20 years ago

I dispatched my club's DC layout by DTC and then TWC / ABS when the layout was converted over to DCC.
