Tsimshian Dance Group Git Hoan, Celebration 2016 | Sealaska Heritage

Watch as the Tsimshian dance group Git Hoan from Metlakatla performs at Sealaska Heritage's event Celebration 2016.
Celebration is a biennial festival of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. The four-day event includes dance performances and associated events such as a Native art market, lectures, a juried art show and competition, traditional food contests, and a parade through downtown Juneau. First held in 1982, Celebration has grown into one of the largest events in Alaska, drawing thousands of people.

Cool to see a song dedicated to someone who kept the name going 👌 Im especially enjoying the read because it was written at the time Old Metlakatla was founded, when alot of our people got their English family names and its cool to recognize the backstory of your own family back there! AMY LOU BARNEY WROTE A VERY CONDENSED HISTORY OF JUNEAU. at 95 Amy still sold it for 14 or 16 $ from her front porch. Amy Was a photographer for JUNEAU Empire until 1936. Pictures of War Canoes are in it Coming from HomeShore.

is it only the men that drum most of the time- or can the women drum with them? I saw women drumming in the grand entrance and exit?

Both men and women can drum in Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian culture, and many dance groups at Celebration today have women drummers

It depends on the dance group. For instance, my villages ladies don't have very active dances, so it's very common for them to be drummers
