Watch as the Tsimshian dance group Tsmaay (4th Generation
Tsimshian Dancers) from Metlakatla perform at Sealaska Heritage's event Celebration 2018.
Celebration is a biennial festival of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures held in the Southeast Alaska community of Juneau. The four-day event includes dance performances and associated events such as a Native art market, lectures, a juried art show and competition, traditional food contests, and a parade through downtown Juneau. First held in 1982, Celebration has grown into one of the largest events in Alaska, drawing thousands of people.

My was adopted out of the Tlingit tribe when she was four. It’s cool 😎 to see people who look like me even if only in a video. I met my Tlingit grandfather but unfortunately he died at age 83 six months after I met him.😢 I felt such an emotional connection to him... I have always loved birds and trees and he did as well. My mom was told she was Native and I didn’t believe it growing up because my mom looked more Hawaiian and Asian than the Natives in my state now I see why because we are Tlingit. I wish I had some culture from my Tlingit heritage but due to my mom’s adoption we have never had it. I wish some day I could go to Alaska but I’m too scared. I think it would be awesome 😎 for once in my life to walk around in public and blend in vs sticking out like a sore thumb everywhere I go. My dad is white but somehow my skin is dark like my moms.

Hi, we have all sorts of performances by Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian groups (this group is a Tsimshian group) during our 4 day event Celebration. The next Celebration will be June 10 - 13, 2020 in Juneau, Alaska, and will occur every even year in June afterwards as well. Hope you will be able to make it to a Celebration!

Mr grandfather’s name was Francis D Hanson and was Raven from the Tlingit clan. I just wonder if anyone remembers him? He grew up in Juneau.

I wish we could see what their grand ceremonies were actually like, with all the people dancing and singing and having the same experience at once. 10-20 people slightly mimmicks the atmosphere, I'm sure. But to behold a whole village or family of people all in sync...I would be so honored to witness such a thing...
