Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge - Testing Chaos Drones

The long awaited Chaos Drone is finally here! The outcome of most battles between infected units and the regular ones were quite unique and unpredictable.
I have to say a big thanks to a new user "Tutankhamun" for volunteering in helping out and creating the perfect scenario to make this test possible.
So basically, what is a Chaos Drone?
Chaos Drone is a unit available only to Yuri. It costs 1000 resources but if used correctly it can worth the investment. Despite being a light vehicle in terms of survivability, the Chaos Drone is a fast moving vehicle and speed is very crucial for it to work effectively. It can literally cause "chaos" if it manages to penetrate into a group of vehicles even for a few seconds.
Once units are affected they start attacking any unit nearby. The infected units deal the same damage but attack much faster. As long as the Chaos Drone stays close to the infected units and keeps spreading the gas the units will be permanently in "berserk" mode. They will also never attack the Chaos Drone itself. If the Chaos Drone is destroyed or stops spreading the gas, the infection lasts for a few seconds and the unit will return to it's normal mode after that.
Chaos Drone can't affect your own units, thus making this test was a bit more complicated and harder to complete. The variations along with the power ups and promotions are endless thus I included only the most interesting ones.
Come to think, there are many ways to power up your units that you may not have thought of. As it seems, the complete scenario would be an Elite Unit with a power-up Crate in a Tank Bunker while being infected by Chaos Drone. Can you imagine it?!

Chaos Drones are one of the weirdest units in the game. It's advertised as a Chaos Spreading disruption unit, meant to charge in and prevent focus fire, but it's held back by major issues: - Low Armor - Not fast enough - Inconsistent and doesn't work on a ton of units. - Expensive The Berserk effect, while it CAN cause enemy units to blow themselves up, can also benefit the enemy; since berserk units will shoot at anything, Friend or foe; leading to scenarios where you gas an enemy, and the enemy berserks and attacks the Chaos Drone, making the entire use fruitless. The only practical use is the kamikaze them in and gas everything in sight. And with a cost of 1000$ a pop, that's not a practical investment 95% of the time.

"Inconsistent": berserk enemies prioritize attacking friendlies that do not have a specific exception set. They only attack the Chaos Drone if no one else is available. "Doesn't work on a ton of units": immunity to berserk is toggled by the same option as immunity to mind control. Hence why Engineers can berserk despite being unarmed and why dogs cannot berserk despite not being robotic.

@@amitakartok Okay, but if that is the case; why would you ever run a Chaos Drone? If they effect the same units, cost more then a Yuri clone; and offer a similar effect, just minus you gaining control of the unit entirely; why wouldn't you just make Yuri clones and mind control them? This forces players to target the Yuri clones, or destroy their own army. Compare that to a Chaos Drone, who 90% of the time will die before they can even get in range due to their crap armor. Any scenario where the Chaos Drone might be useful; a Master Mind or Yuri Clone would be more viable, the double Fire Speed is a nice touch, and okay, the fact that they focus fire allies and neutrals over enemies is also something I never noticed, so that is interesting. I just feel that for the price they ask for; Chaos Drones offer the same effect as most of Yuri's armor, with none of the benefits. After all, Mind controlled infantry can be sent into Bio Reactors for Power, and mind controlled vehicles can be crushed for free money. Berserked Vehicles can do damage, but they will also shoot at you if anything else isn't in range. Unless I'm missing something, I just don't see the point.

Some neat facts about the Chaos Drone: 1. The berserk behavior is repurposed from an old cut feature from Tiberian Sun for Cyborgs. Originally in Tiberian Sun, when Cyborgs would go down into the permanent prone damage state, they'd "go berserk." It was cut due to time constraints. IIRC there is still ways to make it work in Tiberian Sun but it's buggy and only works for units that are Cyborg=true (which can only be on infantry). In RA2, even vanilla RA2 with no YR, infantry with Cyborg=yes that go down into the permanent damage stage can correctly go berserk without any bugs. This feature never actually gets used in RA2 tho. 2. Oddly enough the timing on the berserk effect isn't hardcoded, the damage value of the weapon is used for how long the effect lasts on units and IIRC (though i am not 100% certain on this, so correct me if im wrong) armor values _actually can_ affect that and reduce the time a unit is affected. Using ARES you can also make any unit you want immune to it or have any damage reduction to it you want without making them immune to other mind control effects. In the base game the only way to make a unit immune to Chaos Drones is using ImmuneToPsionics=yes, which also makes that unit unable to be mind controlled. 3. Even further, another thing you think would be hardcoded that is not, is the BerserkFriendly flag. This is what makes units going berserk not attack the Chaos Drone, and this flag can be applied to other units as well. What _is_ hardcoded is that friendly units will always not be affected. 4. Any weapon can apply this berserk effect as long as the Warhead has Psychedelic=true.

The finnicky bit about the Aegis Cruiser is that the missile launchers have to face a certain minimum angle for it launch the missile salvo. You can see an Aegis Cruiser attack at full speed when it is turning to face a 90 degree angle towards the target. And even then, that's only half of the salvo.

The AI always seemed to be able to use them better than I ever could... which isn't saying much since I never used them and they get destroyed very quickly when the AI uses them. Although they did once manage to pull it off in the Yuri Resurgence Campaign by infecting some Magnetrons... so they just kept picking each other up until I got my Gattling Tanks in to smash the Drone once one of the Magnetrons ended up out of range and I could pick up the Drone.

When I played this game, I tested every little thing I could think of. I never liked the idea of not utilising something. Having said that, I barely ever made chaos drones. I saw potential, but never ever really fiddled about with them. Basically figured out the mind control immunity rules apply, and the attack speed benefit. I noticed the mind drone is civilian (white), in't that because the psychotic unit attack the drone too? - Perhaps the effect is to increaes attack speed, and temp swap allegiance to civilian? Never bothered testing this that much, so I never thought to try the non attacking units like the spy and engineer, nor tried suicide to see if attack power was heightened. Tested how garrisoned battle-fortesses might have been effected differently? Would have loved to see an enraged boomer submarine ( get close to shore and fire to raise him into field of fire) though the effect would have been the same as other unit. maybe v3 too? All in all another fantastic video :)

The Chaos Drone in the video is a "neutral". It doesn't belong to me that's why it affects my own units. Unfortunately, the units inside the Battle Fortress don't attack so there was nothing to show. :/ Thanks!
