The caller at 9 minutes in didn't get the timeline straight. Everything was not fine when Shanahan and Dubas spoke on Wednesday/Thursday. Shanahan said he left the conversation with more questions than answers, no indication that the big question: "are you all-in?" was answered.
@JohnSmith-ip4js
@JohnSmith-ip4js Жыл бұрын
These guys didn't listen to what Shanahan said. He said after Dubas' press conference Monday he had a dramatic change in thinking. Then after his meeting with Dubas Wednesday, more doubts. Then after the email from Dubas Thursday, that was it. Shanahan barely mentioned the financial gap on the periphery. The financial gap in the ask was completely secondary and ultimately not addressed because the commitment factor was the issue. The email was the final nail in the coffin. I think he was insulted that Dubas didn't speak to him and/or it was a half hearted agreement to come back. Shanahan also was pretty specific about face to face meetings with Dubas including the decision not to rehire so that email definitely rubbed him the wrong way.

The 11 years between Pat Quinn and Shanny as president ofthe Leafs, the team made the playoffs twice. Twice in in 11 years. Shanny created a new culture in the Leafs and turned them into a consistant playoff team. Failure is the Burke years with zero playoff appearances. The Ballard years when winning was not a priority were failures. Dubas' problem was he never signed or drafted an exceptional goaltender. You cant win a cup without a stud goalie or a stud Dman.

@@darkwillis416 Ten years, one playoff round. Same thing every year, good regular season, nothing in the playoffs. The way they lost against Florida was embarrassing. Mathews must have been injured as he wasn't himself at all. The rest of the team had no urgency, no drive, went through the motions. Still Shanny was going to resign Dubas. The team has been and still is too soft to win in the post season. Need to clean house completely.

@@goodflop255 clean house completely and replace with whom? Brad Treliving? What a joke. Ive lived tbrough some terrible upper management on this team and other than the couple of years of cliff fletcher and the gilmour era, this has been the best leaf teams in the modern era. Dubas' only fault is his loyalty to his staff. Keefe is a decent regular season coach but doesnt have the playoff experience to lead a team to the cup. Maurice out coached him in the 2nd round. Keefe should have had an answer to their forecheck in Game2. As it was, his answer came in Game 3 when the leafs were all over them in the first 10 mins of the 1st period. When Maurice adjusted to their changes, Florida once again stifled the Leafs attack and Keefe had no answer. This Leafs were the better team in the 2nd round. Maurice was just a better coach and tactician.

I did a quick bit of little math for a 12 million player (15% agent fee, 48% income tax) and you end up with 5.3 on 12, 4.3 on a 9 million. Which would you rather have, 9 and another good player on your team for 1 million of your own money, or be a selfish asshole and never win a Stanley Cup.

Move The Toronna Maple Leaves to Houston, and stop with the Arizona speculation. Then The Coyotes can move on to Hawaii, and become The Honolulu Pineapples. Between the Ottawa mess and this one, Ontario doesn't deserve all the madness. Give it a break, and let them have some peace, INCLUDING moving the Sens new building across the river to Gatineau! Then the province can concentrate on getting back to crushing peaceful protests.

Leafs didn't offer Dubas an extension last year so Dubas knew it was time to secretly look for a new job. In Dubas' mind he had to win the cup or he was gonzo. So clearly he has an offer from elsewhere. In his Monday interview Dubas said everyone can make their decision. Dubas knew he was submitting a counter offer to the Leafs on Monday then the Leafs could decide. Shanny said he tried to get the deal done after the trade deadline and Dubas didn't bite then because he obviously already had a secret offer from elsewhere. The reason Canadians team never win is because every Canadian team has constant turn over in the front office. This is going to be a set back for the Leafs.

@@matthewalbin50 I think Dubas was courted by Phoenix. They were allegedly getting a new building and Matthews is tight with Dubas, he's from Phoenix, and he was going to join Dubas in Phoenix eventually. There's also Chicago who got Bedard, Ottawa who is getting a new owner, and Pittsburgh. So I think it's clear Dubas had secret offers just like Paul Maurice did when he quit in Winnipeg. I think Dubas decided that if the Leafs want me to stay he said here's what I want, take it or leave it.

Matthews is probably very savvy in his business dealings. It would make ZERO sense financially for him to go to the desert. He is in his prime (which is short for athletes). Why would he go to a team that is far from being a contender, that doesn't have an arena, that doesn't have a rabid fanbase (you need eyes on you, in order to market yourself)?...and on top of all of that, if he lives in Canada, not only is his marketability through the roof, but his NHL salary gets converted from US $ -> CAN $ (x 1.35 more than he would have in AZ... I just dont think that makes any sense personally (financially)
