As an 80+ New Englander, it has been most gratifying to see the comeback of the wild turkey -- almost never seen in my childhood and youth, but now often encountered around cornfields on the margin of woodlands. Sadly, I have noted exactly the opposite phenomenon with pheasants, often seen in winter in the fields where they would forage the late cornstalks, which we left to provide them winter food. Though I've spent much time outdoors, it's been a half century since seeing one of these beautiful birds in the wild.
@bryfrey9 Жыл бұрын
Well to be fair pheasants are invasive so seeing less is good
@TheRusty Жыл бұрын
Pheasants were introduced from Europe as a game bird. While they're definitely a neat critter, their absence probably means more room for native species like turkeys and quail. So honestly probably a net gain

Another creature that refused to go extinct is is the Bermuda petrel. Commonly known in Bermuda as the cahow, a name derived from its eerie cries, they're a nocturnal ground-nesting seabird that is the second-rarest seabird on the whole planet. Cahows were once superabundant around the archipelago of Bermuda before Europeans, however, Spanish sailors would take up to four thousand birds a night for food. This is on top of the fact these conquistadors brought hogs with them as well, who decimated their burrows. When the English arrived, they devastated the population further by introducing rats, cats, and dogs and once again, hunting them for food. For THREE HUNDRED YEARS, people thought it was extinct. However, they were dramatically rediscovered in the 1950s as eighteen pairs were found in Castle Harbour! Today, they nest on four islets in Castle Harbour. They are the national bird of Bermuda and can be found pictured on Bermudian currency.

Wild turkeys have really habituated themselves to the presence of humans. Seeing them roaming around suburban neighborhoods or snarling up traffic in the downtown of a city of 40,000 people is amusing. They look so confused at all times....but they are wilier than they look. Saw some guy try getting out of his car and shooing them away. They just got out of his way, until he picked up a rock to throw. Then they scattered far and wide, and a couple of them took off and flew over the cars.

But after the tige summit in Russia in the same year, the tiger population increased to 3900 in 2015 and further increased by 40% to 5600 in 2022. Currently there are 5871 adult and baby tiger living free in the wild with 3682 living in my country (India). There are also an additional 8000-10000 tigers living in captivity globally.

Here in Salt Lake City, Utah, "wild" turkeys have become a serious nuisance in the past five or ten years. I spoke with a local Dept. of Natural Resources agent, and he told me that (similarly to many other feral animals such as "wild" boars) these turkeys are a mixture of domestic and wild stock, and are not protected by law. While these beasts mostly just wander the streets in small flocks looking for handouts, they can easily fly 50 feet up into trees or rooftops when the spirit moves them. They can be somewhat aggressive against both pets and humans, and can be destructive of gardens.

Great success stories here! I'm very heartened to hear that cheetahs and saiga antelopes have recovered to such numbers. I had no idea that wild turkeys were in such dire shape until recently. It reminds me of when I was on a dolphin safari around California's Channel Islands and I heard the guide say that brown pelicans used to be on the endangered species list which was a shock since I see them everywhere along the SoCal coast!

If they bred some of Southern cheetahs with the eastern sub species would this improve their genes?
@IbexWatcher Жыл бұрын
The White tailed deer had a very similar decline and recovery story to the turkey. As a result of heavy, deforestation and hunting, they almost became extinct in a lot of eastern North America. Only with strict hunting regulations and reforestation have they exploded into the millions that live today Other big comebacks I can think of are Mexican wolves, California condors, and Persian fallow deer. All three of these species/subspecies are now in their hundreds, after being whittled down to less than 50 individuals (down to just 7 in the case of the wolf)!

Placing Cheetahs into different subspecies when they're more genetically similar than races of Human is absolutely comical but an understandable move from a conservation perspective.
@Afrologist Жыл бұрын
@@zebedeemadness2672 Agreed, especially since the genetic hairsplitting is mostly unjustified. The Indian government started just importing African Cheetahs because even they realised how ridiculous it was to get caught up over contrived subspecies designations over a species as homogenous as Cheetah.
@Afrologist Жыл бұрын
@@zebedeemadness2672 It would honestly be a better idea to blend the populations, then once they are healthy make backcrosses that are more genetically similar to historic populations. Certian alleles will eventually be lost over time due to genetic drift, but honestly we don't get upset about miscegenation in Humans, so why even fuss about subspecies in other animals? After getting my Zoology degree I honestly couldn't be more frustrated with how many people in my field are just completely out-of-touch with the real world after spending their entire adult lives in school.
@Afrologist Жыл бұрын
@@zebedeemadness2672 Well, my point is that these Cheetah "subspecies" aren't even as genetically distant as Human races are. That's why it feels ridiculous to even call them subspecies in the first place. In reality, they really should be considered the Afro-Asiatic Cheetah.

I have always thought that, for the preservation of cheetahs, it would be much safer to relocate them to multiple locations, even in a few hundred individuals, so that if they were to face extinction in Africa, the entire species wouldn't be at risk. Of course, it would be essential to consider controlled conditions, especially in North America, where a smaller population could be introduced due to their historical presence, or in Australia, where there are no significant threats to survival apart from dingoes and crocodiles.
