TT Senior Race June 8 2018 The View from Barregarrow Lap 1

First lap of the 2018 Isle Of Man Senior TT and I'm experiencing the excitement and terror of Barregarrow for the first time. Herere the riders thread between stone walls as the road drops away and bends toward Kirk Michael. I've identified the first dozen riders and recorded CD quality audio in an effort to provide the closest experience to actually being there with me. Turn it up and enjoy!

the oil flags came out after james came throw as he bottomed out big stile and damaged the engine you can hear him shut off and the bang it makes and all the dust and gravel thrown up when hit ground out

I agree-- the sound does make it even more amazing. If electric bikes are the future, I hope you can get to the TT before the glorious symphonic racket that is internal combustion is forever replaced by the dentist drill on two wheels that is electric bikes!

@@ericzinter9535 i hate electric cars. I will never get one no matter what. They are boring especially for long trips and you don't get to see that rpm meter showing 6500rpms when you accelerate for fun and you don't get those sounds coming from the engine when revving and accelerating!!!

It is amazing to be so close to the riders when they pass. The noise! The wind as they pass! You can even feel the radiant heat of the engine! I hope you can experience the IOM for yourself one day if you have not yet done so.

Absolutely superb footage. I initially thought that there were a number of following riders that weren't respecting the flags & not easing off, but having watched various footage of this oil spill - it's only when there were waving yellows (along with the lack of adhesion flags) that guys were noticeably slowing. It just goes to show how difficult it must be for Marshals to quickly recognise & evaluate the extent of road racing incidents and take appropriate action. Rather them than me!

Missy Dee Thanks for your comment. There was some confusion at first. I don't think the riders or marshals were settled in or ready for this kind of hazard-- it wasn't clear at first that oil was deposited on the course. I'm just pleased everyone made it through.

@@ericzinter9535 Spot on, Eric. Of all the races you wouldn't want this incident happening, the first lap of the Senior would be top of the list! Apart from Michael Rutter & Davo Johnson getting worryingly out of shape, the rest of the riders coped remarkably well with such a potentially catastrophic hazard. I've no doubt lessons will be learnt from this incident: but marshals on The Mountain Course cope remarkably well with the unique difficulties they're often presented with. Perhaps a few of their critics should sign up & see how challenging it can be?! The yellow and red flag is also used as to warn of debris on the road. This could mean dirt or mud kicked on to the road by a previous competitor, or a bits of a bike (like a body part or a mirror) that the marshalls cannot get off the road safely. There is that to consider, too - especially considering the nature of the blind corners and incredible speed of the bikes.

@@mikloslipcsey7923 Yes, the Yellow & Red flags are sometimes employed if there's mud or liquid on the course, but bike bits generally see furiously-waved Yellow flags that warn approaching riders of an incident that requires extreme caution in order to negotiate the hazard safely. Waved yellows also indicates that approaching competitors should be prepared to stop, yet there's often one or two that clearly ignore the directive in order to make up time on those who follow the rules...

yeah. Check out my "Trouble at Barregarrow Rev 1" video if you haven't yet. It looks like the spill basically follows the path of Hillier's bike after he bottomed out. The marshall was trying to keep everyone on the inside of Hillier's line-- to keep them from crossing through the oil, I imagine.

unreal...I cannot imagine trying to do this at half the speed they are at in perfect conditions. 130+ through an oiled down dead blind corner. Thank you for these posts Eric. This camera work is amazing.

Faster is often safer in some cases,believe it or not.It`s call carrying momentum.Look at those top riders,they were through the problem before you could blink.It`s that sort of bend,it looks and is indeed spectacular and it has its issues but its design can work for you.Not the case with a few bends on that course,where that`d`ve meant an off for most riders..

Seems the tighter you take the corner the more severe the dip, riders taking a wider line doesn’t seem to be much of a dip.

Sean Burns-- I think guys that race the TT might have a different idea of "taking it easy" than you or me. I did another video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/baXag4eshah6pKc ) that might interest you. It compares four riders through Barregarrow, and you can see Hickman went trough "slower" than Cummins-- but only just!

The ON Ramp to the German autobahn. 😂 I had one of these guys pass me on the A -5 near Frankfurt a few years ago . At first i thought there was a bee in the car and i asked my wife to let it out because i’m allergic . The buzzing sound just kept getting louder until a super bike passed me like i was standing still . Consider , i was doing 160 ( 100 mph ) .

Coconutscott, I agree that additional training probably would be beneficial. Anyone over 16 can be a marshal, resident or Non-IOM resident. What I learned from a quick look at www.iomttma.com/index.php/frequently-asked-questions/ is that newbie marshals are assigned to work under an experienced Marshal. There are about 3000 volunteers who Marshal, so it seems initial training in this manner could be sketchy. I also see that training is being revamped for 2019, so perhaps this video helped identify weakness in response or room for improvement. The marshals do a great job, and donate their time-- but there's always room for improvement.
