Great to see ridebyben ;) To those saying give them food or water not money... food won't clothe you, water won't put a roof over your head or a blanket to keep you warm and in the case of women food or water will not help you with sanitary needs. Love watching these kind of videos. People can be so judgemental, whether they are on the streets through drugs/alcohol abuse or something that was out of their control a little compassion goes a long way. Nobody's perfect and we all make mistakes. Be nice, be kind.

I lived in Sydney for two years. One of the things that struck me most was the sheer amount of homeless people, and how terribly easy it is for someone to get kicked in the street and lose everything, including any support except maybe for some church goodwill (many church fronts are homeless sleeping areas) and a couple of good individuals like Ben here. Where I come from (Amsterdam), you'd be hard pressed to find even a few of these people even remotely in as bad a state as the average homeless guy Sydney. It's, like, almost non-existent here. In Sydney they're really everywhere. Subway stations, shopping malls, parking areas, children's playgrounds (many of them are gathering spots for homeless people at night), gas stations, harbor areas, churches, I mean literally every-fucking-where. And Australia dares to call itself civilized. Phah.

Yep, I was a "skilled knowledge worker" (457 visa) and I noticed that Australia, and especially central Sydney which has gotten very used to it, feels like it's getting eroded by the high throughput of capital and people. It makes everything extremely short-term (I mean, half Sydney is thinking "I can do what I want, I'll be outta here in a couple months, I'm not gonna actually care about anything here")... Especially in the central areas with lots of international workers and students, all of whom are welcome but none of whom actually have a Sydneysider future to look towards. Sad, really, because this system only works for people who can really take care of themselves AND don't run into any serious bad luck (like, I don't know, a mortgaged but underinsured house soaking in a flood). And not everyone can and the punishment for that is waaay too hard over there, IMHO. E.G... Where I live, we put people like junkies in cheap rental appartments paid for by the taxpayer under strict control and regulation and help/force them to have a useful daily rythm. Do you have any idea how many stolen bicycles that saves? :) And if you get homeless for whatever reason, there's budgetted funds for getting you some sort of shelter, social security income, healthcare and food quickly, so that at least you won't have to roam the streets causing trouble that nobody wants. All that Sydney seems to do is have the police NIMBY them from suburb to suburb Sorry for the rant. Good on ya for spreading the love mate and have fun on Old Pac :D

I love helping out people who are less fortunate. But where I am from the best I can do is food and drink. There are a lot of homeless people but there are also a lot people trying to hustle for money, lying their asses off.

Someone just needs to buy a shipping container and build these pods in them(offcorse isolate and waterproof), some solar on top and a tractor/2car batteries in to power led lights and usb charging. So people have somewhere to sleep(warm, dry) and charge their devices for possible job opportunities. From other avanues(active ones) food and washing should be hanfled. This pod type shelter is a passive and long term support. One shiping container can house over a dozen people. One of my project is a 3xlarge shipping conteiners to make a sturdy multifunctional housing for several dozen people (with sunning water for drinking+purified rain water/tank for a shower) a small kitchen and a main room with work/shool tables and a TV (wifi and usb chargers available in every pod and common areas). Has heating/cooling and water destilation for super clean drinking water. There is few different price points to make it but all are super cheap compared to any other options available today. With Teslas home HVAC system+solar+powerwall it all will be even cheaper. Can be used to have a cheap pod hotel/hostel or military outpost housing, emmergancy housing (or any other cousing that is needed to be transported and set up fast, aka in a day). Excuse my buggy English (not my country) also corrently having eye problems.

You will accept because you really need. with food you eat once. With money you can buy food for 2-3 days... Its your way to see things. ridebyben Nice video! I'm wondering if it is a cultural thing in Australia? Are 30 somethings caring for geriatric parents and not working as a result before getting stuck when they pass? Here in the states people generally become homeless due to drugs or mental instability. Having worked in the city for years and seeing the same homeless people, I'm convinced that were you to buy them a house they wouldn't live in it.

In my city there are no homeless like in many cities but there are those who make themselves look like them, gypsies, for example. I heard a story of a gypsy family that had the grandma filling papers saying they needed help to raise their 5 kids. Then comes the mother and said the same, then the older sister... In the end, I heard they were making 2000 euros a month, living in shacks and asking money in front of supermarkets. And they are not the only ones, I have neighbors doing the same and getting free food each month. But at the end the dumpster is full of wasted food. We already told the municipal services, but after a month with nothing, they complain and they get it again. Thing is, when you look at them you realize they do not need it. Also they have huge debts on the grocery stores around here.
