Tua Tagovailoa's overtime heroics in the 2018 National Championship deserve a deep rewind

It’s January 8, 2018. Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The College Football National Championship game is in overtime and the hometown Georgia Bulldogs have struck first, putting a 51-yard field goal through the uprights to make this a do or die drive for the Alabama Crimson Tide. The fate of the championship lies in the hands of the Alabama offense, but the quarterback of this offense started this game on the bench.
Despite coming within one second of winning the 2017 National Championship, Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts was benched at half time. In the first half, he completed just three passes for twenty-one yards. Hardly a championship performance. Alabama Head Coach decided to start the second half with true freshman Tua Tagovailoa under center. Now in overtime, Alabama has a chance to win it all but a sack on first down has them in a precarious second and twenty-six situation. Welcome to a moment in history.

Tons of storylines in that season, Chelsea and mourinho’s awful campaign as defending champions, Tottenham and Harry Kane as the unlikely challengers, and the 4000-1 Cinderella story with a group of unknown players and a manager who had never won a league title.

that playoff run was iconic AF and even then the mile high miracle stands out, that game was ranked 1st on the NFL poll for top 20 best games of 2012, small recap of that run: 1st was the wildcard, the last home game of ray lewis against the colts (who baltimore as a city has had a grudge against because of the irsay family bailing on them), the presentation of the defensive line, raven's utter dominance and they even put ray lewis on the last play as a final sendoff. Next the divisional round against the broncos led by peyton manning, boasting an 11-game-winning streak after a 2-3 start to grant them the 1st seed, who had defeated the ravens convincingly at baltimore in the regular season, this game, with 5 lead changes, single digit temperatures, two special teams touchdowns, two bombs for scores and a pick-six, and flacco's hail mary, the mile high miracle itself, to end it all, undrafted rookie soon-to-be the NFL's most accurate kicker justin tucker making a clutch FG for the win in double overtime Then the ravens go to foxborough, and shatter tom brady's 67-0 record of games won while leading at home before halftime to annihilate the patriots on the last 2 quarters and ultimately get revenge for the last AFC championship. And finally, superbowl XLVII, the tale of 2 brothers, of 2 totally different halves before and after the blackout to the point memes about the falcons blowing their lead appeared years after, and a final goal line stand to end ray lewis' carrer at the top (and jacoby jones' 109 yard record-setting kickoff return doing the ray lewis dance afterwards was awesome) And this is not counting the regular season, art modell's death before the season, ray lewis' injury that put him on hold until the playoffs for one last ride, terrel suggs not playing until week 7, ed reed was 1-year before retirement, torrey smith's brother died on the same morning before the week 3 game against the pats, and torrey just puts an unforgettable performance winning 31-30 on home ground after another crazy justin tucker FG for the win...that whole season is deserving of a movie

If they’re gonna do hockey, it should be an iconic clip first... SJS didn’t win the cup or anything, let alone make the finals. It happened in the first round, and is undeserving. They could do Nystrom’s OT goal in the ‘80 Finals (makes me sad as a Flyers fan, but might not be one since it was almost 30 years ago, but might be one since it’s iconic, has controversy, and started one of the greatest dynasties in hockey), the last seconds of Game 7 SCF in ‘94, Yzerman’s OT winner against the Blues with Gretzky turning the puck over seconds prior in Game 7 of the ‘96 WCSF (Detroit didn’t win the cup, but it was nonetheless iconic), Avalanche series winner in the ‘96 SCF of Game 4 in OT, Jason Arnott’s OT series winning goal in the ‘00 Finals, Game 6 of the 2004 SCF (Flames were centimeters away from winning the cup, very controversial, Lightning ended up winning Cup in 7), Game 7 of the ‘09 SCF, Kane’s OT goal in Game 6 of the ‘10 Finals (yes, that pains me as a Flyers fan), the last 2 minutes of Game 6 of the 2013 Finals, and Alex Martinez’s Game 5 OT winner in the 2014 Finals.

Tua’s and Hurts’ play styles complimented each other so well last season. Neither of them were selfish or jealous whether they were on or off the bench. Saban really knows how to control talent and egos if nothing else.

One of my best and oldest friends died the morning of the game, January 8th, and I learned about it while talking about the game at our watch party eating chips and queso. Should’ve also mentioned how Tua and Fromm also were roommates during the Elite 11 QB camp in high school. Not only that, they were literally 1 (Tua) and 2 (Fromm) at the end of the camp. Epic history between two great young QBs who I’m sure will be battling it out for years to come
