How does a talented high school quarterback in East Tennessee who grew up watching the Volunteers end up becoming the school's chief tormentor for the better part of two decades? The answer: he's Steve Spurrier, the man who helped build the Florida-Tennessee into a rivalry that mattered, left for the NFL, and then went back to the SEC East to give Tennessee a little more trouble.

Steve Spurrier had this little thing that's discouraged for virtually everyone in the public eye now: a personality. He wasn't afraid to fire off some slick insults to get a rise out of his opponents. Him throwing jabs and stirring things up brought tons of media attention and got fans on both sides excited. That kind of stuff is what made rivalry games all over the country fun and must see TV. Made those games feel like they meant so much. Now, all the players just comment on each other's IG's and opt out of bowl games.

My favorite is his response to a fire breaking out at the Auburn library--he said something along the lines of the biggest tragedy being that ten of the books hadn't been colored yet. @@JillKirchner - I loved Steve Spurrier, truly I did, even when his wit was turned against my beloved Crimson Tide. Then he quit on his team when faced with his first ever losing season. If any player would have walked like that they would have been branded, and so I branded Steve. In the end, when things finally got hard for the "Head Ball Coach" he packed up and ran away with his tail between his legs. For me there is but one word for his legacy .......... quitter.

There’s one more important part to this rivalry that I can’t believe wasn’t mentioned in this video: In 2013, a 5-7 Tennessee team upset South Carolina. If Tennessee doesn’t win that game, Spurrier goes to the SECCG and possibly takes South Carolina all the way to the national championship game. After that year, all of South Carolina’s best players left, their championship window was locked shut, and Spurrier quit less than two years later. Tennessee got the last laugh out of this rivalry. Spurrier gave South Carolina a championship window, and Tennessee closed it.

It comes down to this...The Head Ball Coach lived in Johnson City, and played football for Science Hill High School. He was always a star athlete in any sport, but football became his love. When it came time to go to college, he wanted to go to U.T., but they were not interested due to the fact that his style of play would not transition into their offensive style. The only university that wanted his style of play was Florida. He had a wonderful visit in Gainesville and decided that's where he would go. The rest is history. I've met Coach Spurrier a few times, and my mother grew up in Kingsport, TN. Kingsport and Johnson City were huge rivals. It's been great to hear all the stories about the rivalries and The Head Ball Coach from my grandfather and uncles. One uncle in particular, who was a die hard U.T. fan stated the only thing he didn't like about Coach Spurrier was that he didn't coach for U.T.

We all enjoy these vids, well done. You break down Peyton Manning, but when T beat Spurrier and got that NC, who was the qb? You can't even nod to Tee Martin? Also, you didn't dig deep enough on still shots of Spurrier. Him drinking beer with his shirt off ata NASCAR event is exquisite.

I legit thought the host in this video died eating rancid bubblegum out of an old baseball card pack with Jon Bois.
