Just a pile of talent performing here. Every member of the band brings something, the personal skill from everyone is evident, and the teamwork and direction from Shaye as well. Every so often I have to revisit this performance and get emotional.

An original band, spontaneous and simple, causes addiction. Since I heard her for the first time I fell in love with her.

The band: great as always! And the little boy in the red shirt dancing at the beginning had some moves going on.

I always miss hearing the introductory theme when Tuba Skinny play this song. However, well done RaoulDuke504 capturing such a spirited performance despite the difficult acoustics of the museum.

It been a while watching this video again. And yes it is something special. I have watched so many brilliant videos, but this is extra outstanding. The Thai sax player is so great. And he has his own style. I love Robin on drumkit so much. I am so impressed again, listening to this wonderful video in 2023.

The sax player, Dr Pathorn Srikaranonda, is probably the most famous Thai jazz musician. He was a child music prodigy who began playing in the king's band when he was 14. He played in the Thai King's personal jazz band every Friday night at the Thai royal palace (when the king was alive and well). Pathorn won a scholarship from His Majesty the King to study music abroad and more than lived up to his promise, earning a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Saxophone Performance at University of Michigan in 1994, a Master’s of Music in Composition at Yale University in 1996 and following up with a doctorate degree in Music Composition at the University of Edinburgh in 2001.

+P.M Lynch Thanks for the info. He's been listening to Aurora Nealand. His use of comic phrasing and the growl is classic Aurora. You don't learn that kind of playing from advanced music degrees, though I'm sure it's useful in his composing and teaching. But you'll never hear a classical musician use the growl or that kind of phrasing, or swing like that. The poor things don't have a clue about it, nor are they able to improvise on the spot and swing at the same time. Maybe chew gum and walk, but I digress. The University of Michigan, however, does have a jazz and improvisational studies department. Btw, Ben Polcer also graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in music.

Yes, I think Ben graduated Mich. around '97, about three yrs after Path. You could see his initial Popeye the sailor response riff delighted Shaye and surprised Craig as well. Thailand has a couple decent jazz festivals and Path (whose father was an influential Thai musician also connected to the royal family) could easily hook up T.S. with those. It would be cool to see T.S. do a Japan/Thailand tour.

I might add...I lived in Thailand a few yrs and spent some time listening to Thai jazz musicians and his skills are certainly not typical...he stands out for sure.

"Milenburg Joys" is the correct song title spelling, although the town was spelled "Milneburg" . It was composed by Jelly Roll Morton and first recorded by Jelly Roll and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings in 1923, and was a popular tune played by bands on Lake Pontchatrain during joyous occasions like 4th of July weekend in New Orleans. The historic Milneburg neighborhood no longer exists and was moved, the current Milneburg takes its name from the original town. Locals pronounced it "Mill - en - burg" , hence Jelly Roll's spelling. Milneburg was a town on the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana that was absorbed into the city of New Orleans,.. It was important in the early development of jazz since bands from different parts of the city and across racial lines would listen to each other and try to outdo each other there. Musician Sharkey Bonano grew up in Milneburg, and the area is commemorated in the New Orleans Rhythm Kings tune "Milenburg Joys" which has remained a jazz standard. It's one of my all time favorites, so thanks, Randy for filming this .

As a big fan of this band, I've watched this video dozens of times, each time with great pleasure. This time I was struck by the band's incredible swing. And by the energy and force that Shaye brings each time she enters. What an incredible band. And not least, the people in the band are engaged, focused and attractive. It's also nice to see Marathonracer's scholarly commentary. Such documentation is important.
@gordonbainbridge83712 жыл бұрын
Can't believe it's been four years since I wrote this comment. The piece is just as good now as it was then. Dr. Pathorn Srikaranonda's witty reply to Craig's virtuosic solo ranks up there with the band's best moments. And it's still fun to see Shaye cue the fills and break during her solo.

+jim zeney Unfortunately, Erika no longer lives in New Orleans and doesn't sing regularly with Tuba Skinny. But she still sings with them for special performances.
@senravengames7 жыл бұрын
They need a female singer. Someone that teams up well with Erika when she's able to sing with them. Not the same listening to them without a great voice to lead.
@Marathonracer7 жыл бұрын
+Alex Shamis You're leading the band, now? Somebody better tell Shaye, before she loses control completely. LOL. Tuba skinny is a great band, with or without Erika Lewis, despite how good she is. And they certainly don't need two female singers to "team up". In case you didn't notice, ""Milenburg Joys" is an instrumental, and a damn good one, as are many tunes in their wide ranging repertoire. Greg Sherman does a fine job on some tunes that Erika couldn't sing as well. because of the lyrics and the style of the tune. Erika is still singing with Tuba Skinny when she can. She didn't just quit the band, but she no longer lives in NOLA. This is not "Meschiya Lake" and her Little Big Horns, it's "Tuba Skinny". Erika has always been one part of a great group of musicians and never sang on all songs to begin with , like Meschiya does. Like all great jazz bands, Tuba Skinny is bigger than the sum of their parts. Just saying.
