I bought my White Nights from Jackson's during their Christmas sale. It was one of the best investments I've added to my watercolors. I went from a 12 Cotman set to those and it was a big change for me. I love them and haven't had any trouble with the 24 set. I think they are great for beginners. I have a nice collection of M.Graham but I always go to White Nights to practice and play.

awesome review! i agree with everything you have said here! i much prefer the pans than the tubes. the white nights tubes contain honey and in a tropical climate, they were horrible at curing in my pans. after several weeks, the surface did dry up but was still tacky, some even transferred onto my finger, and the paint underneath stayed soft. sennelier does a much better job at curing in pans than white nights. if anyone wants to get the white nights tubes though, i recommend squeezing out little bit of paint at a time when filling half pans, spread them in thin layers of paint and letting each layer dry before adding more paint to the pan. it will take quite a while to fill the pans, but it's better than buying a more expensive paint (if cost goes into consideration). so if it takes 2-3 times to fill a halfpan for other paint brands, with white nights i suggest at least 5-6times depending on how full you like your halfpans to be. i agree with you, Lindsay. the tubes do feel weaker. and YES! the gummy-ness is a bit inconvenient. also, their PV15 doesn't have much granulation and bubbles quite a bit if you know what i mean. i did a lightfast test on my Sonnet watercolours. the PG8 and PV3 had no changes after 5 months in the sun. (scans in my link below if anyone's interested). however, i know some people have done their own tests and found PG8 to be indeed fugitive. ultimately, it's good to test your own paints. :) paintinhiding.wixsite.com/website/post/watercolour-lightfast-test-in-progress

Lindsay, just to help you out with the name of the producer - Nevskaya. An easy way to pronounce it, without going too much into the Russian details.. But you can say: Nev - like from first part in Nevada. Skaya- say in English "sky" and add an "a" to it. So it goes Nev-sky-a.

I didn't mention the second part of the name "palitra", but that one is clear I think.

Just what I needed to know about WN tubes x pans. Thank you ao much!🙌❤️ Buying a full set of any artist grade paints (even a White Nights one) is now out of my league, so I'm going for a few very specific colors, considering their pigments and attributes, in an attempt to give my Van Gogh's palette a little upgrade. I'm planning to add a few White Nights' pans and a couple of Rembrandt tubes to try out for now. Fingers crossed!

I quite like White Nights, but I've only used the pans. They're not my favourite brand ever, but they're very good for the price. I don't particularly care for their earth colors, that's probably their biggest weakness in my opinion. Their pastel colors are wonderful though, so much nicer than then Prima pastel dreams set (my first pastel watercolors, I really don't care for them tbh). I bought all my pans open stock, because I don't particularly like any of the sets. Except the pastel set sold at Artemiranda, if I didn't already own most of the paints I would totally have bought that set!

I agree, their earth colors are not the best. I do like how they look in terms of the color itself, but I do not like the way that they spread and dry on the paper. - Too much of a tendency to streak.

The full pans cost €2.11 per pan where I live, while the 12 tubes set costs €28 on A-zon. So with shipment costs included 12 pans are not that much more expensive than the tubes. So basically you can just pick the colors you want/like with the pans and call it a day. Much more convenient, imo. Only (huge) difference: on A-zon you can fill up your palette with the tubes and then simply refund them and get your money back, having 12 nice artist grade watercolor full pans for free (as a prime member, of course). ;P Then you can buy more full pans for those €28 to increase your color palette instead, lol.

Personally I love these paints. I've had a 36 set of White Nights full pans and while there are definitely colors I'm not the biggest fan of, they've been just fine for playing around and learning. They're really affordable here in Poland and just all around great quality. I'm not selling any paintings so I'm not too concerned with the lightfastness, The only colors I've had to replace are ultramarine, burnt sienna, and yellow ochre, but that just comes with following your tutorials :) In the future I plan to refill them with Renesans tubes (widely available and affordable here of course) but so far they've been great.

White nights is one of my choice of brands when my watercolors run out. They seem to be a great quality for the price. My other choice is van gogh, but sets seem to always be out of stock more so than white nights at the stores i frequent. Single tubes in open stock are most of the time out of stock as well, esp. the essential colors. My more "high end" choice is mijello mission gold pure pigment set, which cost is not that far off from a 24 full pan set from white nights

I have started testing the non light fast colors to see what happens. I'm thinking of putting them together in a separate palette. I'm glad that these colors are still made even if they are not light fast. Markers aren't either and nobody seems to complain about it. I always buy them open stock. I already have too many paints to buy sets.

@@thefrugalcrafter They are at least replacing the more traditional colors that had non light fast pigments with ones that do have lightfast pigments. Those that are truly yarka colors that have no lightfast replacement for that hue may stay. For instance, they had a Hansa yellow that was originally PY 1 and now I think it is PY154 and I think one of their violet/purples is going to PV 23 things like that.

Hi Lindsay thanks for the video very informative, I bought the White Nights a while back when you did a review on them. I just wanted to let you in on something I found a while back on Amazon, but will be ordering from their own website as Amazon can't seem to get it together for this company. The company I am talking about is the PaintPuck.com. It is a watercolor water holder that is very unique, the top and bottom come off and can go onto other containers. It also has the ability to hold your paintbrushes, the bottom of the puck is also a paint brush cleaner, the other thing that Amazon can't get together on is the brush cleaner that sits in the bottom of ANY cup or jar, has a suction cup on it so it sits in place (supposed to come in 3 to a package, got 2 the first order, reordered and they sent me 1). And if you use it with something other than water color the puck will expand if there is solvent used in it, then it goes back to its original size after cleaning. The Paint Puck water holder I have been using since I got, and when you use it even if you water is dirty if you clean you brush in the puck at the bottom and pull the water out the water is almost clear. Dawson Cannon the inventor/owner of the company and is awesome. I reached out to him when Amazon messed my orders up and he not only sent me a full order in pink but he also sent me a full order in white so I should be set for life. haha So please check these out they are really neat. Check it out at PaintPuck.com. Gotta go find some more glasses to turn into water container now that my pucks have arrived.

Jackson’s also sells the tubes for less than the American market. Ive only bought a handful of tubes, mostly of some of their new pastels which wound up costing less than twice the price of a full pan and I haven’t experienced any problems with them but it’s been a very small sample set and only a few other pastel pans ( different pigments) to compare them against but they all seem to act more or less the same and they all have some white in them. I also have the 36 set of Yarkas and a few other random colors I’ve picked up in pans but no other tubes as yet. FYI, they have some odd choices in colors and I don’t believe they have either a sap green or a Payne’s gray. They a So do t have a granulating black. I wish they did.

I love white nights paint. I have mostly pans though. The Russian green is my absolute favorite green. It didn't budge in my lightfast testing on it but it wasn't thinned. Especially when you mix it with py150 it makes beautiful sap green shade. But I paint for fun. The cerulean blue i have is more vibrant than m Graham I have with the same pigment. So odd. I wonder if you had some amount of binder separation or something.

the emerald is one of my favorites. They do tend to be weaker on the darker browns; ( I don't love the sepia either why the eu and rusian brands are so hungup on that. I prefer either transparent brown from sennelier,wich is like painting with chocolate or burnt umber) I like the umber; the red could have a bit more of a christmassy red in it. I can mix with cad red and sienna but I prefer the single colors,bc well Im lazy like that. I know my colortheory though haha.

Oh, you don't like their PB35? I love it! I love it so much that even though I have an almost full pan, I ordered a tube of it just to have some in storage, this and the cad yellow med. 😸 I had not opened the tubes yet, but now I did, just to compare it with the pan, and I honestly do not see a difference. Did you buy your set recently? I'm asking because all my White Nights stuff is pretty new, all from this year, so maybe they have impoved their tubes - or their pans have gotten worse. 😹 As for the colors in the sets, I agree that sepia is no the best option. I don't know why some companies choose to include it instead of an umbra. Schmincke does, too, and when I bought my Schmincke set I made sure to pick up a single pan of burnt umbra along with it. Sepia is a color that I find nice to use just on it's own, but I really cannot think of many ways or reasons to include it otherwise. When I bought my White Nights set I checked out all the different options, and I eventually settled for the Fantasy theme special set and added a burnt umbra and a neutral tint. Allover these are great paints, I really like them, I just wish that their earth tones were a little less streaky. But then again, you cannot expect miracles for this price. Here in Germany I pay 2 Euro for a pan, 2,70 if it's cad or cobalt, and 3,22/4,33 Euro for a 10ml tube - in comparison, I have to pay 1,80 Euro for a halfpan of Cotman or Van Gogh. And there are so many lovely options! I have collected 45 of their colors now, and I just love them. It's funny, because normally I am the type of person who would be perfectly fine with a set of 10 or so chosen colors, but I just cannot resist when there is so much to choose from and it's so affordable. So everytime I order something from my art supply dealer, a couple of pans of White Nights end up in my shopping cart. 😻

Is the formula in the tubes different than the pans? I’m planning to order some single colors from white nights and I’m stuck between the pan and tube version since the price difference between the two is so small. Also the one thing that annoys me about white nights is that there is no viridian. Lukas is also like that (in the 48 set), which really annoyed me since I paid such a high price and have to order a separate pan of viridian on the side. Anyways, what brand of watercolor has the best granulating/genuine viridian?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure on best but I think lukas 1862 viridian us the easiest to rewet. That might be best to use fresh from the tube as it is so tough to rewet from dry. As far as tubes vs pans in white nights I prefer the pand as they seem stronger but when comparing swatches the colors look the same. They are liquid poured so they may be the same thing so do what's best for you.
