Thanks for the review))) I'm from Russia, just from St. Petersburg and here you can buy these paints in every office supply store)) I have been using these paints since childhood, this company has been producing various paints for a long time, such as: watercolor, acrylic, oil, tempera, various pencils, paper and all that I even had one box with paints from my father, made in 1976

Hi! So nice to hear from someone who comes from Russia about these paints. I suspected they were hugely popular there, almost every Russian painter I see online uses or used them. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@staycha You moon.I heard and read alot about vermilion lead and some other toxic pigments that are used for certain colors that can cause birth defects etc.That is why i am sceptic about it and i really wanted to hear from other artist who use it on daily bases.I draw when i was a kid and i forgot how much i enjoy appritiate and love art and i had a little talent but working on a skill is more important then talent.Are you 100 % sure that they don't make any colors from the components that other companies use?? is there any way to find out from what pigments and components are colors made from White Nights i couldn't find it on their official page??? Ty again for your time Moon_Bunny

Thank you so much. I’m a 68 year old beginner and wanted a review before buying watercolours. I bought the White Nights and they’re really good- I just had a bit of a problem getting them out of the silver foil, but that’s likely arthritis. Your voice is so soothing.

I hear a lot of people who don't like the chromium oxide green, but I love it. Just try adding a speck of that in a ruby color. You get that beutiful dusty rose. I also add it to brighter greens or blues to get natural looking greens :). Love your review and love those paints!

Most colors that you see in a set and you wonder why is that color there and who would use that color - usually they are a single pigment that are excellent for color mixes! I was looking at other artists limited palettes (Jane Blundell is a wonderful watercolorist with several excellent books on watercolor mixing! See her blog - wow!) and they usually have ideal colors for mixing. Paula in Florida

I also like the Chromium Oxide Green as a mixing color, also. I bought one set for a gift recently and it didn’t contain a pan, so I made him one. The cases have definitely improved over one I saw a couple of years ago.

There is a new Elena Bazanova Edition out now where all the colors she uses are 3 star rating lightfastness for every one of the 21 colors included. I didn't know her prior seeing the set but once I googled her I was amazed by her work, she paint's incredible still lives and has a demo of her procedure over at the Nevskaya palitra youtube channel in a 7 part series painting a still life scene. Thought this info might be helpful for some. There is also a pretty wooden box set with 48 of the 55 range for those that like the biggest sets. Thx for the review Irit.

Susan Hamilton I think they are. a commentor here mentioned that they have some questionable choices for pigments that are not lightfast as other brands are, so if that's an issue for you make some research and check that out. I think they are excellent value for money and the colors are creamy and intense, really fun to paint with. thx for watching!

I'm approaching 68 years old. I don't worry about light fastness because I won't be around to see my things fade and they aren't good enough to go in a museum when I'm gone lol. As long as the colours are bright and they flow nicely is all I care about. I find these reviews so helpful although they make me want to go out and buy everything I see. I think most of us have that same problem though. lol I could probably open a small store with my art supplies and I want more, more, more! I think Albrecht Durer water colour pencils are next on my shopping list. I shall check and see if you've done a review on those. ha ha Thanks Irit.

Lol I love your reasoning Susan! But I think most of us probably won't have our art hanging in the Louvre, so we can take our chances ;) I think if my kids really want to hold on to any of my art, they won't mind that the bright pink faded... But on the other hand I do understand people wanting this reliability, def serious artists. Oh I could also open a store! I love art supplies, and since I do a lot of painting and crafting, also with my daughter, and I imagine very soon with my youngest, I really enjoy using good stuff, and I see how my daughter is excited about painting when she can use my supplies (I do try to convince her to use my more affordable ones ;) ) I have some colors of the Albrecht Durer and they are lovely. Really fun stuff. I do recommend picking up a few in your favorite colors before committing to a set. I will try to do a review once I use them a bit more, but they are def top quality.

If you're german you can get a 24-set of these colors under the name 'Igor Trestoi' . They are by the same manufacturer (if you flip the pans over they are branded with Nevskaya Palitras logo and 'St. Petersburg') and are the same line and just rebranded under the diffrent name.

I think the reason why the Cotman cobalt blue reminds you so much of ultramarine is that it is a mix of ultramarine pb29 and pw5 because cobalt pigments are expensive so most Student Grade colors use a mixture of white and ultramarine 😊

I bought the set of 24 maybe five or six years ago but I hated them. Tbh I didn‘t have ANY plan about watercolor and I was a much worse artist in general back then. They didnt come in nice packages like they do now, it was a cardboard package and I was shocked that they were so sticky and ugly looking with an uneven surface. I really hated them until recently. I took them out of the cardboard they were stuck to (bc of the sticky paint) and put them in a semi nice tobacco box. I swatched them out and noticed that they aren’t as bad as thought. The last three months I really got into watercolor, the different brands and binders/vehicles and now I am glad that I got White Nights in my watercolor collection. 🤗
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 6 жыл бұрын
Yes they are very sticky! I think it's because they are poured into the pans... Some paints that have honey in them are sticky (like Sennelier), but I don't actially know if these contain honey... The new palettes are nice, but the cardbox one is cheaper, so even greater value if you already have a palette to put them in. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I have two sets of these, both I think have 24 colors...but rarely use them. I can’t quite put my finger on why. I don’t hate them, I just don’t feel they perform like “regular” watercolors. And I hated having to unwrap all those pans. Some of the paper was stuck to the paint, and is still stuck to the paint. Everything sticks to the paint. If you have a cat, you will always be picking cat fur out of the paint.

Lol! Yes, I think you won't find better value, maybe the Mijello Mission Gold 36 tube set is also worth checking, cause from what I've seen it's great (it's on my Christmas wishlist!), and maybe more luxurious? I'd compare those two and get the one that appeals to you more. But this set is really great. As I say in the video, it's a big palette, so if you have a small space to paint, I'd consider the smaller sets (the Mission Gold palette also seems quite large). I know, I'm annoying, but I always worry when people buy something based on my recommendations... Maybe I shouldn't do video reviews?? Lol

Chalky doesn't sound right, ive been usign these for over 20 years and know many people who do aswell, and never seen anything like it, I would almost say its a fake set that you have (yes even though the paint is very inexpensive by US/UK prices in Russia it would still be profitable to make a knock off and sell locally or to international customers) You could contact the manufacturer or re-seller because if you said they were too moist - thats possible but chalky with their formula - never :( anyways sorry for your troubles
@Roslyngal

Surely the only way this can happen is if you contaminate your pans with opaque paints or gouache? I’d say that’s a risk if you are a beginner and think to add the white (PW6) that’s in the white pan in order to lighten a darker colour? I can see how this would quickly make all your pans ‘chalky’. Teachers usually warn you to use seperate rinsing water jars for your gouache/whites, or even that can transmit to your pans as you go back and forth with your brushes. My research says that otherwise paint pans don’t change after time. They can dry out a bit, or go moldy in humid climates, but not change from transparent to chalky.

Hi, i was wondering, which do you feel is better: white nights or sennelier? please help I'm so confused here XD!
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 7 жыл бұрын
I admit my heart says Sennelier for the most part. But a 24 half pans Sennelier set will cost around double the 36 full pans white nights. So when it comes to value for money, no doubt white nights wins. Sennelier also has a range of around 100 paints, is readily available in my area of the world in half pans, full pans, small and large tubes ( the tubes are great value and rewet beautifully), whereas white nights are available to me only in half pans and their colour range is about 50. Both brands have a creamy consistency and rewet well. Hope that helps!
@iritlandgraf

Correction: meant to write white nights are only available in full pans ( that cost between at least half and sometimes a quarter of similar pans by other brands... again, their value for money is unparalleled)

thanks for the awesome review. I'm looking at either the White Nights, Winsor Newton Cotman or the Van Gogh. Curious to think what your thoughts are?
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay! I'm not a fan of Cotman, they are a little dry for my taste, but great value on their big tubes. Between White Nights and Van Gogh I think you can't go wrong. I have a couple of review of Van Gogh coming in August, including a brief brand overview. They offer so many different sets, great value and they are vegan. White Nights aren't vegan, but if that is not a concern, they are lovely to paint with. Their sets are full pans while van gogh are half pans or tubes, so personal preference comes in. White Nights are slightly better value, but the larger sets are big, so if studio space is an issue, I'd go for Van Gogh. Hope that helps!

I just ordered this set from Jerry's Artarama on a special sale for $49 - cheaper than I found anywhere else. I am new to watercolor and found your review SO very helpful ! I inherited some Daniel Smith tubes from a friend that moved but wanted a full range of colors so the 36 pan set seemed a good purchase. I was initially trying to figure out if I needed to order a holder empty pans and a case/tin to hold them but it looks like you had no problem using them in the case they came in. Will you keep yours in the original carrier you have them in or would I want to purchase the empty pans for them and purchase another container for the set ?? Great video - a lot of effort on your part so thanks !!!

@iritlandgraf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy! I am keeping mine in their original case. I did make a few changes to the palette, got a few extra colors and removed the ones I am not likely to use (like white, that green oxide and a couple of browns). I replaced them with full pans from White Nights, but other brands could fit, as well as half pans, so it's quite a flexible palette that can grow with you as you develop your style and color preferences. Its is quite large, so if I wanted to have a smaller palette for painting on the go (not something I do but maybe you do), I'd probably get a smaller empty metal tin for 12 full pans. Glad you found my review helpful!

sofisgirl lol if only there were more hours on the day... my gut would say white nights. however both sets have their strong points. I like the palette of the mijello ones. I also like their pinks. I really don't like their blues. st. Petersburg have lovely blues, their ultramarine blue is one of my favourites from all the brands I have. both sets can be customised in time according to your needs. I'll do my best to make a comparison, but it comes down to personal preference at this level I think.

What watercolor brushes do you recommend?
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 8 жыл бұрын
JoAnne Ferguson good question! I have a mishmash of brands I picked up here and there. it really depends what you paint, because there are so many different sizes and shapes... one thing I will say, pick ones intended for watercolors, use them only for watercolors, and treat them nicely ( don't leave them standing in water) :) I usually go to my local art supplies store and look at the student grade brushes. also there are good deals on Blitsy.com for brushes. another store I shop from is Jackson's art supplies in the UK and they ship brushes orders over 20£ for free worldwide.

I think I had a different camera when I filmed this video, I use them both togther and really can't say I prefer one to the other. I think Roman has some lovely mixtures that white nights doen't, and then white nights came out with some pastel colors that are really interesting (if you like that kind of paint). When it comes to same colors pigment vs. pigment they perform very similarly.

Hi! I think it has a similar flow, but I find that in any brand some pigments flow better than others, except Qor where generally they all have a better flow, if that's what you want. Silt? Do you mean if they are chalky? They are not, they are very creamy and smooth. Hope that helps!

I am planning to buy this watercolor brand. I know that it is an artist grade product so it should be guaranteed of quality. I would just like to know how is it as far as the fluidity of the pigment on wet technique is concerned? Does it form granulation? Thanks in advance.
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 4 жыл бұрын
It's a great paint. Granulation depends on the pigment formulation, so some granulate and other don't across all brands. In this particular set there are not a lot of granulating colors.

@@raquelsanchez9668 Dear Raquel. I am SINCERELY sorry that you are offended by my comment. I have no desire whatsoever to deride the Russian people. For some years I was a pro-active Russophile. But in order to get the message across to Vlad the Butcher, it has to come from his own people and if they don't feel the pinch, they might continue to think of him as some sort of hero. I yearn for the day when this is resolved justly and peacefully. I LOVE MY WHITE KNIGHTS WATER COLOURS. THEY ARE AMONG MY VERY BEST. However, if protest does not affect and therefore provoke all aspects of Russian life, that war-criminal will continue to replicate the worst atrocities of the British (sorry!) in Victorian SW Africa, Third Riech, Stalin - and beyond. As for my own nation - we are governed currently by a contingent of elite plonkers and the people of my nation are paying the price to the point of squeezing the pips. Please accept my best wishes and assurance that I am not anti-Russian - just anti-Vlad, the wannabee Czar. It is certainly not my fault that Putin has relegated proud Russia to a pariah state.

@@ukpaul9221 Hello, I understand you perfectly. And I can understand what it feels like. I believe that the majority of coherent people do not support a war and are not in favor of Putin. But I also think that small companies are not to blame, but I respect that you want to push and not buy them. Look, in my country, there is a state that wants to become independent from Spain. And many people have stopped buying their products. I believe that companies and businesses are not to blame. Many are manipulated by governments.
