Cruz's character displays the easygoing prejudice against foreigners that is far more common outside the US than we realize. Cruz has a very haughty Spanish intonation here.

Oh no honey, conservatives realize there is prejudice and racism all over the world. It’s the liberal media and their possy who has made the American people believe America is “the most racist country in the world”. If racism is such a problem maybe its not the smartest thing to have open borders 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's why this scene felt so true to life for me. There are people just like this. You can be polite, kind, charismatic towards them, but they'll try to shut you down at every turn.

I honestly can’t stand the superiority complex and the casual racism in this movie, as if it’s unheard of to find Mandarin beautiful, and then in the next breath she goes on to speak her language to sort of “prove” how “superior” she thinks it sounds. Of course it’s just a movie but I think what truly bothers me is the fact that NO ONE seems to acknowledge this flaw about the character and instead she just gets praised, bc it’s Penelope Cruz or something

A language is about grammar, syntaxis, pronunciation, punctuation etc and just being born into a language does not make on a skilled speaker. There are striking differences in the skills between people of different educational levels and that is a total of effort and investment (amongst other issues). Having said that, learning a foreign language is indeed a hard earned skill and one that highly benefits all learners.

I don't think people realise why Scarlett paused there. It wasn't because she couldn't speak Chinese it was because she was put on the spot. I get it all the time with German. "Say something in German" "Umm what?" "Say something in German" You then freeze because multiple choices of sentences come up but you're not sure which to choose. So you revert to the basics. "Wie geht es dir" How are you in German. What do people expect us to say in our second language? A philosophical speech? If you reply to me, "Es geht mir gut, und dir?" Then I can have a full conversation with if you want... but that's how conversations start. Idk why people criticised Scarlett's character for this; it's a very normal reaction for bilingualis
