It's been a long, stressful, greasy, messy week with a lot of down time waiting for parts. We try to make the most of it and we actually have a little bit of fun while we are broken down in Daytona.

I worked at a marine dealer in the 70's and 80's. IIRC, we didn't see a lot of Paragon transmissions - mostly Borg Warner. You did well getting out, disassembled and reassembled on your own. Don't beat yourself over the setbacks. Good luck with the new/rebuilt unit. You could be opening up new avenues of future employment! Oh... and really like watching you folks - especially Jetty.

Ed, he has actually learned a bunch even though it was not fixed. He learned how not to remove a bearing and probably a bunch more stuff. I have been in his shoes a hundred times and I refuse to pay anyone to do anything. This stuff is not magic. Good on him for trying. This is how you learn.

Yup def learned a ton. I know EXACTLY how the transmission works now when before I had no clue. Very interesting what a planetary gear and reverse brake band do. All that.

I recommend you keep the original trans around, take to a qualified machine shop for repairs, then keep it onboard as a spare. I am hoping you verified that the shaft can turn by hand . You need to verify that the cutlass bearing is not jammed up as a result of the grounding..

Thats not the clutch, its the back of the flywheel where a drive plate connects to and a drive shaft from the transmission inserts in. Always in. The clutch pack are in the gear housing in the center of the transmission. Clutches were fine with almost no wear. Thanks for the recommendation though! Turned out to be a stripped coupling/shaft on the back of the tranny.

Keep smiling! Jetty really adds a lot to these videos. BTW- My dad used to keep a small brass shaft around for doing things like removing that bearing. The idea was that you would tap the brass shaft and since it was softer than the steel you would not damage the steel.

15 years as an auto tech and 5 of them diagnosing/rebuilding manual/auto transmissions. I can honestly say that they are never easy to work on, they are picky, finicky and expensive. Without the right tools (such as a hydraulic press and the special fitting adapters/plates) it can be impossible to rebuild (eg with the needle bearing you dented). Don't be too hard on yourself, you did better than I would have if I was in your shoes, at least you tried! I've seen guys more qualified than me with way less patience and commitment than you, good job on your attempt!

The voice of experience here. A valiant effort by you. Five bonus points for each attempt. Next time just take it out and have it rebuilt. But seriously not many people would attempt that rebuild. You'll be fine. Enjoy a few relaxing days and get underway when you can. It is what it is. Nice boat. While your waiting for parts. You should change your fuel filters and buy some fuel stable. The last thing you need is water in your fuel or a clogged fuel filter. It happens a lot when you buy fuel at different marinas. (Crappy fuel or water in fuel). Let's see, check your bilge pump and free it from gunk. Carry a spare bilge pump. Stock up on fuses breakers and crimping tool electrical connectors, liquid electrical tape Give some serious thought to the Lavio Dry Flush toilet. Ruptured holding tank and or wast hoses make for a very nasty clean up. .

Keep your head up man. Even being able to take the transmission out and try to diagnose it yourself says a lot. Sometimes it may be a trivial detail you're missing and sometimes it might be something bigger. If you can, try to find a shop that will take a look at it and maybe work through the diagnosis with you. Show/tell them what you've done already and maybe they have some words of wisdom. Best of luck and be sure to take a break when you begin to get frustrated. Been there before.

Your positive attitude is inspirational. I had a trawler with a Twin-Disc tranny in the early 1980's. Clanky, but reliable. In 1987 I bought a new, 35' CT Sundeck Trawler with a Ford Lehman SP 135, with the "good" Borg Warner tranny. I sold the boat last October (to get another boat!)... That Lehman engine and BW transmission was awesome. (I had 2800 hours on the engine when I sold it; had replaced most "accessory" parts on the engine, but thank goodness, never had to touch the transmission, nor the innards of the engine. I maintained it to-a-T, myself (with the advice and wisdom of Bob Smith via M.T.O.A.). I can tell you I would never have had the guts, strength, or knowledge to do what you are attempting here. I am very sure I could not have removed that transmission without an A-frame/block and tackle set up in the salon. Yes, I could have taken it apart, but there is no way I could have properly reassembled it. Your perseverance is commendable. I'm a relatively new subscriber, and have back-watched many of your videos. Keep up the great work!

First off Billy, your heart was in the right place when you decided to do this very difficult job. Unfortunately the project was just a bit over your pay grade. Very impressed with your good positive attitude and sticktoitivness! Most true mechanics would find this project a task, especially working down in the bilge area with little to no fresh air or space to move. Hopefully your next episode will show a successful end and you kids continuing your trip North. Give yourself an "attaboy" for just attempting this.

A man has to know his limitations. Now you know one of yours. You did show that you possess tenacity not to quit easy. But transmissions are one of those things that it takes special training to be successful. it would be wise to have your original transmission rebuilt and kept as a spare. I say this because the one you got was used and you can't know how long it will last. I tip my hat to you because most folks won't have the guts to show such a struggle..

Ok. Don't mind saying it. I'm impressed. I know how hard tearing apart a transmission and putting it back together is. Though looking at what you're working with and the sound it made (or didn't make) I'm left to wonder if it's as simple as you forgot a key on the shaft.

Good Luck! Did I tell you New Smyrna is my favorite Spot. Haha We go to Ponce Inlet all the time. Great fishing near the inlet. Love Disappearing Beach and go up the Lighthouse. Nice little park and a good restaurant there. Smooth Sailing Kids!

you guys got me totally hooked! my favorite boat has always been a trawler. And because of you guys I'm gonna get started on my dream. The good thing for me is I'm already an automotive mechanic with lots of engine experience AND electrical! can definitely rewire a boat and rebuild engines and transmissions! but I fear is wood or fiberglass work! I can barley hammer a nail into wood😉 go figure right😱 anyway, I watched all of your videos between Sunday and yesterday, so keep em coming! And again, good luck and stay safe! by the way, you guys are really showing what it means to be a team! God bless
