Thanks for all the great recommendations you guys! We did actually have a red flag on the mast before we left that you can see quickly at @12:01 and we have been making some tweaks along the way including moving the mast back about a foot which gives us significant clearance between it and the camper. We could easily remove the bowsprit as well if it was too close to the camper but that hasn’t been a problem.

I was going to mention a flag. The DOT would nail you for sure. I'd put a red LED light on the end. of the end of the mast. Nighttime driving seeing the mast may be an issue. Watching further the back of the pontoons should have lights as well. The overhang of the trailer should have lights. I check the USA highway traffic act.

When I set up my F-9A for trailering, I did not like the only lights being mounted way under on the back of the trailer, which is about 10-12' from the rear of the boat (with rudder/OB motor kicked up). So I bought another light set that I attached to aluminum rails and mounted to the boat stern. I split off the wiring at the trailer tongue with a plug to disconnect when pulling the empty trailer. This helped make the lights much more visible to following traffic.

Lots of good comments. I pull a RV, boat trailer, and heavy equipment trailers. Red flag in the mast, extended brake lights, careful with the mask clearance near the trailer are all excellent suggestions. You may want to look at tilting the motor up for more ground clearance. It is hard to tell from the video if it would bottom out going over a dip. Above all, have fun!!

When I set up my F-9A (31') for trailering, I did this. Extra trailer lights attached to boat rear since rear of trailer ends way short of complete towing package. I split the wires off at the tongue with removable plug. I remove the extra set when towing the empty trailer. Running both sets of lights in parallel is no problem. The extra lights mount on an aluminum rail that attaches to transom. This puts the lights about 7'6" apart (boat/trailer package is 8'5" over wheels) and at eye level of following traffic.

I'm wondering if removing the tow ball from the mount and rotating the mount 180° and reinstalling the ball, would level the trailer out and have all the wheel bearings sharing there load. It may make the tongue to high, but buying a mount with less of an offset, wouldn't be a huge purchase.

You should have a blast sailing in Newport, there are so many other waterfront towns with nice facilities for smaller boats and sailors nearby that are fun to explore during day sails: Jamestown, across Narragansett Bay is one. Jetty would approve of Jamestown. Portsmouth has a big marina and cool restaurant farther north of Newport also on Aquidneck Island on the other side of the Navy Base farther north. Wickford is beyond Jamestown on the other side of that 1 mile wide x 9 mile long island called Conanicut Island that Jamestown is on. Jamestown and Wickford are both cute, walkable, waterfront towns you could visit that are all close enough so you could be back in Newport either in a few hours or by the end of the day.

@@whitecap308 Little Compton and Tiverton are nice. They are on the other side of Aquidneck Island (that Newport occupies the southern third of. They aren't as walkable as Jamestown and Wickford. The views from Jamestown are really the most breathtaking because once there, you look across and have a panorama view ofthe Newport Bridge, The Naval War College and Navy base, Rose Island (with its own light house), Goat Island also in Newport Harbor with a marina and hotel and condos, a colonial section called "The Point" with historic colonial homes and then the historic downtown section, Trinity Church's steeple where George Washington worshiped when visiting. Looking south to the entrance of the bay you can also see Fort Adams and further south beyond that closer to Jamestown is "Clingstone" the big house all by itself on its own "island" or giant rock. Before the hurricane of 1934 there was a walkway connecting it to Jamestown but now you need a boat to get to it. There are some KZbin videos of it. Also, Ft. Wetherill in Jamestown has some great views. It is basically all the way to the end of Walcott Ave and at the end you take a left, walk down the hill a little way and you'll see the entrance to Ft. Wetherill on your right. Climb up to the highest point and you'll get a great view of the Shamrock Cliffs, The Inn at Castle Hill, and what used to be the Auchincloss home where Jackie Kennedy spent summers growing up and where she and JFK had their wedding reception on the front lawn after getting married at St. Mary's Church which is on the corner of Memorial Blvd and Spring St. If you are there in the summer, Ft. Wetherill is a favorite for those who like cliff jumping. When in Jamestown there is also Mackeral Cove, Beavertail Light House, the West Ferry and Dutch Island and Fort Getty accessible by boat. You could sail around the entire Island and see some gorgeous sites. Another fun sail would be to sail by the numerous famous "Newport Mansions" where you'd essentially sail around the southern tip of Newport where all the mansions a/k/a "summer cottages" were build which are mostly all waterfront properties such as "The Breakers" and "Rose Cliff" and "The Astor's Beechwood and many more. You'd start heading south along the west shore and then head north up the eastern shore. You could anchor the boat off of first beach or Easton's Beach, walk up to the road and to your left is the entrance to the "Cliff Walk" which goes all along the waterfront in front of the Mansions. If you wanted to get closer to them. Bristol, RI is also cute, walkable and also where the Herreshoff Marine Museum is located but that is much farther north. Anyway, those are some "keywords" you could look up for starters. I used to live in both Jamestown, Newport and Providence and sailed and raced in Narragansett Bay since I was little.

Still a little baffled how you can tow that size boat with a camper that big, with that rig .... must be a beast. There are a couple of things I would like to point out ..... - The way the mast is so close to your camper means that you will not be able to go up anything much more than a very gentle rise, think it would be risky if you attempt to go up an average driveway. The distance between your rigs rear axle and the trailers axle means that any bump will exagerate the vertical articulation and you will likely hinge that mast through your camper. - you might consider hanging an extra set of trailer lights off your transom, I doubt a truckle would be able to see the ones mounted where they are. - you might also think about hanging a red (high vis) flag off the end of your mast (illuminated if you are planing on towing that at night) Not trolling, just some obvious practical points you might want to consider, I know road laws are most likely different over there, even so, I reakon you can make some simple adjustments and minimise potential risks. Looking forward to see how that trimaran goes, cheers

That mast is going to go right through the door of your RV if you ever go through a sharp dip, or enter a steep parking lot from a street. You might want to consider extending your hitch out another couple of feet, so that when you hit a pivot point like that, you don't end up damaging something.
@Tulasendlesssummer3 жыл бұрын
We actually did move the mast back another foot after our first launch in Newport which has been working out perfectly. We can't really extend the hitch any longer because it weakens the loading capacity too much
@stephenlundy50823 жыл бұрын
Also, the mast extends off the back of the boat/trailer quite far. You should have a red flag on that. In fact it might be a good idea to check your state laws regarding the safe towing of such a vehicle on the roads.

@allynonderdonk75773 жыл бұрын
You are going to get all kinds of tickets towing that boat. The main reason is the mast. In order to be road legal there are dimensions that the overhang must meet. Also if there is something sticking out that far it needs to be lit or have a red flag on it. This varies by state to state as to the laws. You need to wire in a red light that can be affixed to the mast at the end or some unsuspecting trucker not seeing the mast is going to impale themselves on your mast and furler.
@tim12993 жыл бұрын
I would be more comfortable towing that vessel if dual axles were made that attached directly to the center fuselage ,positioned further back and a towing tongue that attached to the front center fuselage with a center beam that connects the two . Both separate from the boat once in the water . The boat floats . Pull out the two attached parts (via connecting beam). The beam sole purpose is to recover the axles from the water.

We have boat and trailer regi through a dealer as well as insurance so all our bases are covered 👍

3400lb with trailer??? That's very light. My trailer alone for my F-9A is 1700lb. I don't trailer much but kick my outboard up when I do. I guess it's a toss up between extending the length of towing package by about 1.5' with OB kicked up or leaving it down and exposed to more road hazards but with shorter OA length.

It’s around 3500lbs dry without trailer

@@Tulasendlesssummer My F-9A (31') built with carbon fiber over duracore is about 3950lb dry but with all sails and safety gear. I did use a thicker 9.4oz outer carbon cloth than the 5.7oz that Farrier recommended (plus a 2oz glass external abrasion layer) so it's a little overbuilt but strong, stiff and durable as hell. With a 1700lb trailer, the package is about 5700+ lb. It's a big (long) package to tow but handles fairly well as it's not too heavy and is balanced right. Note about anchoring - Even with a decent bridle, it sails quite a bit at anchor and after dragging multiple times with a lightweight Fortress, I bit the weight bullet and went with a 22lb Delta. Still like to sail but never drags. Some of the newer anchors are probably better but those lightweight aluminum ones never worked for me.

Add a Sway bar when long-hauling ???
@Tulasendlesssummer3 жыл бұрын
Before we left FL we upgraded our rear sway bar to a Hellwig and it has been working out awesome.

Can't open the camper door.....unless the trailer is at a pretty sharp angle to the truck.

Not sure that trailer is legal for that boat. In California you would have to put lights on the back of the boat.

What a hassle that's going to be to have to load, launch and trailer that catamaran everywhere you go.

Yes. Totally agree. They should give the boat to me. I will be happy to use it.
