I look forward to your videos, I have been an avid racer for 50+years. From Lightings, then Hobies and for 39 years a Stiletto 27. I am an 8 time Stiletto National Champion. Racing really teaches one how to sail and the abilities of the boat. When you strip the boat for the race, it becomes a machine. Go do well in a race and move your’home’ back in later. Look forward to more about the race.

I'm a retiree. I love your adventures and your fun personalities. Your video skills aren't bad either! I know nothing about sailing, but I've owned many small power boats (15 to 38 feet). My favorite times have been when we went off on multi-day destination trips, sleeping and cooking aboard. Much was the same; onboard mechanics, sleeping accommodations, food prep, plumbing stuff, etc., as you do.

I grew up in a sailing family with both parents who raced when they were little and as adults. I I was introduced to sailing as a toddler and when old enough took several years of sailing lessons at our yacht club with other kids my age. I sailed for fun in college and then as an adult I mostly have just sailed for pleasure except for an occasional special race/event.

Ya'll discussed a lot of good points about cruising or racing, but in final analysis Sierra wins when she said, "but it's our HOME". Example, you wouldn't race your camper around hairpen curves at extreme speeds.

Cruiser here, for sure! Not only am I laid back, I don't have a competitive bone in my body. Not one. Even with board games, I help the other side. My favorite thing to do, is help each other as much as possible, and THEN, see who wins! I just can't help myself!🤣And like Sierra, I rarely drive over the speed limit. I like life peaceful and calm with all the comfort and joy this world will bless me with! I'm a cruiser and team player through and through! A very loyal Co-pilot! 💜 It's a great balance when you've got a thrill seeker for a partner! 😉

Yeah I'm with you Sierra. I like the cruising, exploring, seeing new places and being in the wilderness. Here on the coast of B.C. we can go long periods and never see another boat. And there's so many small shelters you can nook into that only hold one or two boats. I can relate to Bill as I always loved riding hard on the dirtbikes or 3 wheelers but on the water its just relax time.
@johnnylightning14913 жыл бұрын
Props for not exceeding the speed limit Sierra, there are lots of other ways to get your thrills in this world. I think I could be both a racer and a cruiser. I am after al, I am crew member on a lower level NASCAR team. I also very much enjoy slowing down and smelling the roses. I always take the two lane on my bike trips and sometimes on car trips. Good luck to Billy and the boys. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Both! You know anytime in sight of another boat it's a race. Admit it. Seriously, I enjoy the teamwork and precision of racing knowing one's role and learning the capabilities and limitations of the boat, yourself, other crew and the skipper after, hopefully, hours of practice, experience and time together. The learning curve is steep (but rewarding) and continuous in racing. But I also love single handing and cruising alone or with others for soul replenishment. Each endeavor is a different type of fun, fulfillment or, if nothing else, enjoyment/disappointment lessons learned. Overall, if I'm on (and sometimes in) the water -- that's for me.

Don't currently have a boat. Sailed a Hobie Cat on Lake Michigan for years and loved the thrill of the singing rigging, smashing through waves, flying the hull as high as possible. Also submarined, turtled, bent the mast on the bottom, etc. If it was my home out on the ocean, I'd probably be more careful.

I think I'd enjoy the cruiser end of it, but I would enjoy going fast too! That being said, I think the more experience you have with pushing your limits (especially on someone else's boat) would boost confidence in knowing that you could make the right decisions at the right time to stay within safety zones ( heeled over without going too far over.)

Lisa is like Sierra, loves sailing but more about the destination. I on the other hand enjoy a boat that sails well. After 30 years we have come to the conclusion that we love performance multihulls not for the top speeds but the ability to be able to sail in light winds while others are motoring. Our dog Tinker however doesn’t care about the sailing, only interested in 2 squares a day, lots of treats and time ashore! And sleeping!

Racing makes you a better sailor. You push the boat to the breaking point, then back off a notch. The Key West race needs a good navigator and a strategy. You want to stay out of the Gulf Stream which finds you in shallow water, sometimes very shallow water. How high do you want to raise the boards?
@mikemendes75983 жыл бұрын
I think most racers are also cruisers, but not necessarily the other way around. Shocked that Sierra wouldn't love racing since she is such an adrenaline junky in so many other regards? Racing point to point on handicap is nothing like racing one design around the buoys. THAT will sharpen your skills like nothing else, and takes complete concentration. You will learn more about sail trim and boat control (both of which = safety) in one around the buoys race than you will in hours of cruising. Not only do you compete against the other boats, but like all sailing, you are tested against the wind and water as well - awesome! Handicap racing isn't as fun as you can't directly compare boat speeds. And point to point or offshore isn't as intense since your race takes many hours or days. Some of those other boats were very cool!

Cruiser ! ..........because the point of being on the water is to enjoy being on the water.....simple. Not racing to get from point a to point b. That’s what you do when you are on land......driving a car. Being on the water gets you away from doing that.........slowing down , and enjoying the moment. To me, thats the point of having a boat. Sierra sounds like she doesn’t like how her mindset is when you are rushing to do something. Relaaaaaax 😎

Learned how to sail as a kid by racing El Toros. Unfortunately, learning by racing makes you constantly aware of sail trim and always trying to eek out just a little more speed from your boat. I say unfortunately because that's the way I was when cruising too. Drove my wife crazy. Now we cruise on an old Grand Banks trawler and I crew on a race boat for a friend. Best of both worlds.
